So, I'm not dead! Just been sick as a dog.. But, blah-blah-ing aside, my 'newest' guy: Karl Unger, RAFM Modern Day heroes. Last one shows how he stands up with Mr. Scattergun. |

The shack? One of the first PA thingers I built. (And I'm damn proud of it, too!) For some reason, I get better pictures with rust and dirt as a background, instead of flat white.. go figure. But, nah.. he's not stiff. The AK's just... well, 'compensation'. |

I have the 3 other SWAT grunts to throw out, and, the original Gloria model. (Guns akimbo, based off a Miss Milla Jovovitch for the 1st Resident Evil movie.) I've also got their zombie pack, but, I'm thinking of going ahead and selling it off... why? 80-man packs of Warzone plastics, that's why! Those models are great, plus, if I pick up a few bags, I'll not only be able to make 2 huge armies (Or multiple in different schemes..), but have enough helmets/miniguns/what-have-you's to never need to scratch-build any. |

Nice work with Karl. He would make a great Merc or bodyguard. Hell he would even make a great settlement leader. I got a box of those warzone minis. I have 2 sci-fi skirmish armies (one for Aryanriech and one for Brittannia bunker cities). I still have a few for conversions and a I flogged off bags of 10 of each on evilbay - and made my money back for the 80! People seem eager to buy them. |

He does look nice - I agree with Danny that he'd make a gresat merc boss or settlemenet leader. He probably isn't wrapped up enough for a trader boss, but he may have left his gear somewhere now the fighting is starting ![]() As for the warzone figures - I've never actually had a chance to play with any, but I have heard lots of good things said about them. There is talk over on the LAF that Ramshackel games might be doing a variety of gasmasked heads which will just 'happen' to fit.... |

You guys aren't too far off: I was planning on having him as a Raider turned Gun For Hire. But, my Warzone duders have been ordered (A few days ago..), and are on their merry way across the pond, so, here's hoping they get here soon! So, minor updates: Final 3 pic: The last three SWAT grunts... which aren't done. I've got the clothing basecoated and washed, still need to highlight, do skin/masks/balaclavas/bases/etc. I'll have them as an experienced, expensive 4-man Merc. group. Haven't decided on roles or names, yet. Dark pic: The other 'atmospheric' picture of Mr. Scattergun in the shantytown, entering one of the decrepit shacks. I think it looks pretty cool, for a screw-around picture. Ambush: Finished ruins at work. All but 2 sections are done, so, with a few more pieces, I'll have a small densely-covered table's worth of terrain. You'll want to magnify this one; Karl's expression actually looks appropriate. "Did I jus' hear somethin'?... Nahw.. Jus' the wind.." |

I guess I just got lucky with those shots then.. heh. Still, that means a lot coming from you Ross! (How the bloody hell do you do skin? I never quite seem to get mine right.) I enjoy the 'dark' and 'realistic' painting... I even did it with my old Space Marines. No, I'm not kidding. I tried to paint Space Marines 'Realistically'. Not the best example, but still. Also shows you how awful I am with free-hand.. (They were part of the army I sold about 2 weeks ago, for just abut what I paid for everything to begin with. No just t get the rulebook and codex out of here..bleh.) |

They look good - I always found ordinary room lights excellent for giving your pics a dark and moody feel. |

I see what you mean with the smurf's. they do look darker than the norm. The 'art' to doing skin, study it first. By that I mean get hold of some nudie photo's, then once you've finished with them... look closer to see how the light reflects on the skin (outdoor shots are best for this), then it's just a case of choosing the colour you want. That colour you choose will be you mid level, you need to darken the mid colour as a first coat, then add a lighter colour to move upto and then past the mid colour. For example, I want Dwarf Flesh as a standard colour. I'll start with a base coat of Snake Bite Leather or Bestial Brown. Then I mix a 45/55 of Bestial Brown/Dwarf Flesh, apply all over evenly covering all the original base coat (this just smooths the final lighter colour over a black undercoat). Then I add portions of Elf Flesh to the BB/DW mix, painting to leave creases, then continue adding EF to the mix for each highlight. Probably doesn't sound real flash, and to proper painters it's as flawed as hell, but that's my theory of skin painting (yes, including studying the nude photo's). |

Thats my excuse to Laura for magazines. I am studying flesh tones! Seriously though Ross has a point and I pretty much do my flesh the same way. Remember 3 tones makes it look good on the table, 4 or 5 tones makes it look great up close. I have heard of some of the great masters doing as many as 8 or 9 different tones on a face.

I'll keep that in mind. I normally just do 2-3 tones to keep it simple, especially when I'm speed painting.. Now I just need to find some non-goth..uh.. 'stuff'... Edit: Most of my pictures are actually taken in pretty bright light (Overhead lamp, with another positioned withing 12" for clarity), and the smurfs had full-on natural light, and a white-lined light box. I always start with a black primer, so that may have something to do with it. Can't stand working from white. Just never seems to work out decently. Edited by Dimitri, Mar 21 2009, 10:20 PM.

My painting of flesh is a bit more rough and ready: base coat wiht desired shade (Bronzed flesh for most caucasiains, dark flesh for blacks, Graveyard earth for Asians & Vomit brown for oriental) then apply a wash (Flesh or chesnut for White & orientals & dark brown/black for the others) and dry brush in the original manner... That seems to make all the details standout really nicely, and is also very quick. |

I usually follow something simmilar to Ross's method for Flesh. Brown Undercoats are a great start for most things I find. |

I try to keep the layering minimal if it's only, say, bare hands or somesuch, but I've been trying to layer more, in relevance to how much skin there is. Which is why I got my Warzone duders in: They all wear helmets, and don't have any exposed skin. Fancy that, eh? |
