I've been doing PA terrain for a total of about a week now, with a grand 2 weeks of terrain making experience in total. Yeah, I'm a newb.

The 'hut' pics are of a Raider Shanty deal.
The PA oones are of the shanty town I built.

Pretty nice work for a "newb".

I really like those plank floors

Excellent work on the base with all the shacks! Your rusted metal looks great too.

Thanks man!

I honestly thought everything was going to look awful when I was building it.
Something kind of 'clicked' when I was painting, and I ended up with something pretty decent, I think.
I've also been looking at Ross's B29 stuff a lot, and it's definitely inspirational. I'm trying to replicate some of his ruins and scrub-grass right now. Imitation is the best form of flattery, right?

Edit: Gah, I'm used to having a 'Someone has posted while you were typing' warning.
But, thanks Ross! I actually kind of cheated with the shacks; I used a mix of black and rust spray primer, and had my work cut out for me from there.

I'm not sure if this is appropriate, seeing as it has a mini in it (My only PA-themed one thus far), but, it gives a wee bit more detail.

Like I said in my edit: Lack of a 'Someone is talking before you!' warning is a bit strange for me.

Still, you have some great stuff Ross... actually, I'm lucky I caught some of your WIP's, otherwise I would have never known about cork tile.... mmm... cork tile..

(Hey, if I'm laying it on, I may as well make it thick, right? ;) )

Always works for me :D

That last pic is fantastic! Is that Krieg or a Pig Iron model? It really suits the terrain I reckon. There you go, you've got a tech faction already using some previously done models ;)

The post while you were posting would be handy, I've only ever encountered it on another forum and that one shut down at the start of this year.

Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us considering your quality of work thus far! (and seeing what you can do with cork, bloody handy stuff!)

It's actually an RAFM Swat Grunt. I painted him up a few days ago specifically to try and get a feel for the terrain. I think he turned out pretty nicely, for a rush job.

But, I'm over on 40kforums quite a bit. I think it's hosted by phpbb, and the Admin keeps adding more and more new crap... Well.. I still like the place, but, let's just say it's changed a lot since I first joined.

But, I should have a few pieces done within the hour... I'm actually batch painting around 20 or so.. heh..

20!?!? You're on fire! What time zone are you in? You're either a night owl or an early riser.

I think you've manage the feel with that grunt, or at least it works for me!

Ah, it's only about 10pm, here. Central US time, I believe.
But, once I'm in a painting mood, I try to get as much as I can done.
Well, that, and I've had to prime as much as I can in a short a span as possible, what, with the weather flopping around like it has been. Freezing rain one day, balmy the next. Been a weird few weeks.

Too right!
And, with that said, a few shots.

I just couldn't seem to get the grass right, and I think I went a bit heavy on the black wash, in some places. Threw in Mr. Scattergun again, to give a sense of scale. He's about 32-34mm, if I remember correctly.

If this is your "newb" work, I can't wait to see what your "grizzled veteran" stuff is going to look like! :(|grin:

Quoted for truth!!

The grass looks OK to me, perhaps a little high, but it still works well.
What sort of paints are you using out of curiosity?

Thanks!
I'm just trying to learn as much as I can...
Honestly, I'm a mediocre mini painter, at best.. but, I just seem to get into a rhythm when I'm doing terrain. Turns out looking better than any Space Marine I've ever painted, I can tell you that much!

Edit: I'm using cheapy $0.50 a tube craft paint, right now. Never bothered to pick up any Citadel or Vallejo.

Wow! That terrain is looking really good - especially for a newb!. As Al say - I can't wait to see what it looks like when you've got a bit more experiance!

As for the RAFM figure... (is it bad that I could ID before you posted it as such?) for all you were saying about it being a rush job, it still looks great :)

Nice work on the latest ruins. Quite impressive.

Ross has been a source of inspiration to a number of people. After looking at his B29 stuff I just had to make my own sofas for cover pieces.

Thanks guys!
Don't worry about recognizing figures; after spending so much time with GW cut n' paste troops, even 'generic' sculpts stand out for me.

I managed to get a few more pieces done (And it's 18, not 20 in total. My bad!), before Mr. 'Helper' Cat decided to waltz in. Cork may be pretty sturdy, but not much stands up to Kosmo, so I decided to play it safe and quit for the night.
I'll wait until I have all of it done before I hurl more pictures up. Should be today or tomorrow, seeing as just about everything's basecoated already.

@Ross: Do you buy all of the little bits&bobs you use, or sculpt them? I've been meaning to bring a bit more 'life' into some things, and having a steady source of clutter tends to help with that.

Short answer = no.

Long answer...
I end up scratching most of my stuff, but I try and make use of what I have laying around. I don't think I've used putty for terrain in a very long time (though that'll change soon enough).

For example, the WWII building I'm belting out at the moment, I have a heap of cups and round containers from the older GW dwarf sprues, shave off the dwarf 'B' symbol and they look like they belong in any pub. The small boxes are the bulky hammers with an added handle. Electrical capacitors make good cups/containers/barrels depending on size.
Furniture can be scratched easy enough with balsa wood and icy pole sticks. The seats from toy car kits (if you do a wasteland car and cover in all the windows) add a bit of flavour too.
Most of my small scatter is from various GW plastic parts with a little twist or work (yes I collected GW for years but fantasy never really grabbed me (so I've only got a couple of smallish armies), I never like the fluff of 40K and the system now bores the hell outta me after all these years but I do have a good number of gutted sprues to fall back on for bits) though I tend to avoid 40K parts as to me they seem too obvious as to where they come from :D

EDIT: I tell a fib, I have bought a couple of these packs for terrain:
