STALKER clear sky is the Prequel to STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl. Basically its how the "zone" gets as bad as it does in the first (last?) game. Like the other game its not quite PA but if the zone expands to encompass the earth (which is starting to happen in the first - last game! Gah all this time stuff can wreck your head) it could easily be a setting of its own. Dont forget that the area is littered with abandoned vehicles, ruins and mutants so it has a Post Apoc feel. The game has much more of the mystical feel of the STALKER movie than the first game and even mentions the laws of the zone that the Stalker in the movie is always talking about. Basically the strange anomolies in the zone are caused by the zone defending itself - along with zone blow outs and dangerous PSI emmisions. Like the film it gives you the feel that the zone is a place of power and its alive, senitent and possibly intelligent. Oddly it adds a little bit of something to the game. So whats different? First up you start in a new location (there is a couple more added), the graphics are so much better, you get real night (sooo dark you can see nowt) and you can be killed a lot easier. Radiation in this game kills you alot faster than the first. If you see your rad meter flash green - run like hell and then take some vodka or anti rad drugs quickly. The maps are basically the same but some of the ruins from the first are more intact and have proper bases. One thing to note is the factions have very different power bases than in the first game and pretty much no where is safe. On of my favorite is a old factory which is 2 buildings. In the older game a couple of Stalkers hang out here along with some mutants. Basically its a ruin. In this game its a base with boarded up doors and barricades. The farm you start in is also great fodder for a Post Apoc base. I am tempted to model them. lol. One great thing is that all bases have an armourer who fixes your weapons or in some cases can customise them (enlarged mags is a popular with me!). In addition to walking to the map checkpoints to move to the next map STALKER clear sky now has guides who will take to locations for a price. Again these guys have the feel of the stalker in the movie. One nice thing is some of the other characters you run into in the first game can b found in this game too. Nimble (first mission in the first game) is hanging about the farm at the beginning. Your charcter isnt a Stalker but a Mercenary and he has survived an emmission. The first person to do so. It has changed his biological set up. With every zone emission he gains something. He gains radiation and anomolies resistance. The downside is that it is slowly destroying your nervous system. So to live you have to find who it is that has attacked the zone and stop the emissions by killing them, before your nerous system is burnt out. I am only into the start of this game and its very different and a lot harder. No doubt it will inspire more Post Apoc stuff from me! |

Yeah. So far the whole zone is over run by bandits and they are making life really difficult. Unlike the guys in the first game - they have more auto weapons and liberally lob grenades around when you try to take out a group of them. Grrrr. No doubt I will figure out how to sort the little problems they pose when I get better body armour and more ammo (out of AK74 ammo, running low on SMG ammo too). Just ran across my first snork! A full SMG clip sorted its hunger for flesh! |

A update after playing this for a while. The game has a lot more locations than the first game. Most of the exisiting locations are intact unlike the first game (the first game has much more of a Post Apoc feel to it IMO). One major difference is that all the locations in the first game are now in the hands of other factions in this game. Bandits start out as neutral against you - but be warned they will take everything you have in "taxes". Also these is a point where they mug you and take everything and your money too. Thankfully they arent too smart and if you have the guts to sneak about at night you can pick them off easily as they walk about with torches. My favorite faction is still Freedom but I think thats because I am a bit of a anarchist! Like the first there is lots of side missions. You can still use Vodka for Rad poisoning and food will boost your health still like the first game. However the bandage will only stop bleeding and doesnt boost your health. It is nice to hear all of the text in English rather than the first games english only for mission bits. There is lots of grumbeling and moaning - some of it amusing - "You never let me finish a meal!", "I dont know why I just dont die!" (they usually do). In the Freedom camp there is loud hailer banter between the trader and armourer. It is quite amusing. Think of the sort of thing you would hear if Ross and I where to spend all day shouting abuse at each other with loud hailers. The mutant beasts are mega hard to kill now and require alot more ammo to kill. It seems that they have more powers and move even faster. They also like to gang up on you. I just have had to deal with a Bloodsucker swarm. 6 or 7 of the buggers. The moved too fast and where invisible most of the time making killing them impossible. All you can do is RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY! Snorks appear to be able to leap over 8 foot obstacles - which means that they are suddenly behind you. The Pseudo Dog have the ability to vanish (got to hit these mutts side on) - but there is only one dog - the rest are phantoms. You have to kill the real one. Difficult when the phantoms are also tearing you to bits. The other mutants remain unchanged but just seem harder to kill and quicker. In the first game I never came across the Rat mutant (despite re-playing it several times). However I found hordes of them underground. The positives are that the game has a lot more varied weaponry than the first one (the Russian special Hi velicoty 9mm assault rifles and silenced weapons are still available). Game styled Browning Hi Powers and Beretta pistols turning up - and I have just found a LMG! Cant wait to try that on something. One downside is the game seems more buggy than the first one and it can be a bit frustrating. I hope that the patches will start turning up soon. Still its good fun and great inspiration. One thing to note is that the first game (esp with the later patches) is more loved than the second game out in internet land. If your console or PC can handle it - give the first game a go. As far as I am aware both games have not made it to consoles. I cant think why. All a Xbox is - is a stripped PC without the daft operating system. All I can say is it must be a Russian thing. |

Its happend at least twice with different dialogs from the two guys - until the commander gets fed up and tells them off! lol! The Bandits are funny when you pull a weapon too "Yeah?! Yeah?! I can way my weapon around too! See?!", "Your gonna die buddy!", "Finish him off boys!". Thats not including all the insults you hear. One thing you must learn is how to RUN! You die quickly and often you are out numbered and out gunned. I am currently off Bloodsucker hunting with a RDP LMG. Tricky. If only hunting one - I would go for a shotgun with solid ammo. But you need auto spray and lots of it for the numbers you encounter in some parts of the zone (there is a dog pack hanging about too!). Got to be ready to leg it! |

Man, I've been wanting to play SOC and Clear Sky forever, now.. I heard Call of Pripyayt is well into production, so I'm all excited over that, even though my rig can't play any of them. Still, I've seen screenshots and read little stories about SOC with Oblivion Lost installed. So many 'I was out of ammo, it was dark, and I climbed up the first thing I could find. I huddled in a corner hoping 'it' couldn't see me. I -heard- 'it' below, searching.' Seems like an extremely atmospheric game. |

Been there, done that! Actually there was 6 of them and I hid in the bushes. Both games have quite scary parts. The first is more atmospheric though. Those underground labs are scary places.

Depends what level you where playing at! Ahh the mutant in the underground. In clear sky I actually saw mutant rats there. Labs X18 and X16 are a lot scarier. When you dont have night vision on your suit and you hear snorks roaring in the dark.....you cant beat it. I was talking about the underground clangs and bangs. You feel constantly on guard waiting for something to leap out at you. |
