I know this sort of thing come up a bit, but I was sitting back today thinking of another style of 25/28mm gaming, sort of RPG in space. You know, like the old West End Games Star Wars RPG and the like.

And it got me thinking, I'd have to buy 'x' amount of models from here, and some from here, and a few more from here. But it occurred to me, there's a few models that no one really does. Just the sort of table filler that really brings in the visual aspect of table top gaming to the front as it coincides with the hero/villian models and great scenery.

So, why I'm posting this for is two fold, 1) Is there a market for this sort of sci-fi filler out there, and 2) what sort of things would go into this niche?

Personally, though it may be from a desire to model these things, I say there is a market, more than likely not a lucrative one, but one that some 'hard core' gamers would appreciate.

The sort of things I'd like to see are: pets, alien pets, robots, human sci-fi civilians, alien civilians, alien passive creatures, alien savage creatures, things like that.
I know there's a few companies that do do these things, but what if you could get it all at the one place?

What do you guys reckon about all that?

I got me thinking about all those lovely creatures from Rogue Trader, grynx, etc. They could be pretty cool to have around on the board.

There are some really niches out there still - although from a 'gaming it now' perspective, 25mm would bethe best approach as you've got the GZG ranges, mega miniatres modern civies & critters, the old grenadier 'Traveller' range, TSRs Gamma world/Traveller bits & a few other odds 'n sods.

I guess GZG covers most of the genre with bits from different ranges - as does Irregular if you don't mind the sculpting being a bit less then copplestone/et al have lead us to expect. I have no idea what sort of market there will be for a company specialisingin that sort of thing.

(I've actually got some 25mm sci fi figures i'm contemplating using for a dedicated 25mm sci fi game, but i'm not sure if i'll get around to it. i'll keep you posted. If i dob't do anythign with them this year they'll go up for sale I think)

I too would like some of the background minis/critters from the Rogue Trader days. Live the civvies only hard core gamers would want them I guess - but still there is a market. Check out the ranges Xander mentions.

Also worth a look is Hasslefree - they have lots of conucbines and dancers. Plus they also have various civvies such as the not scooby doo gang (damn those meddleing kids!), children and a complete set of fantasy villagers (you might need to convert these). I think some of the starwars minis have civvie aliens. The mongoose 2000AD range had a few civvies and robots too - but these are getting rare to find.

Personally I would also like to see some mangy mutts too.

Personally I've been on the lookout for some sort of civilian crew for starship gaming (or sci-fi gaming in general). I think there's a need for them. Bartenders are still around, ladies of the night, dope dealers and all other sorts of lurid people of the night. And well, Heresy just recently launched a couple of beautiful figures for sci-fi inspectors. But alas, there's only five of them...

Anyway, to make a long rant short: YES! There's a definate need for sci-fi non-coms of the sort we had back in the Rogue Trader days. Adventurers, not nessecarily Space Marine Clone 9000 :)

Yeah, GZG do a great amount of civvies, both modern and space colonials, cops, MP's, starship crew ect, I think (due to an unhealthy obsession for Eureka and GZG) that it's the guys that's gotten me hooked on the idea.

See, Eureka does civvies for Victorian era (including small and large dogs) and for Arabian settings. While I'm not 'into' those two genres (yet :whis: ), they are tempting just for the fact that they are unique and make awesome table filler. Just imagine a Sinbad the Sailor type street battle with a good dozen or so civvies ducking in and out of the firing lines, dogs running around nuts etc.

Alot of civvie lines can be suited up to sci-fi....... couldn't be that hard could it....

The arabian types can be used pretty much anywhere (another good'gernal use' one is C19th mexican civillians - as the sombrero & loose baggy clothing is pretty adaptable)

I must admitt to having some civvies painted up for VSF games - i'm planning to use them to populate villages, etc to make things a biit more interesting (and to give me a way of using some of the more obscure figures I've picked up...)
