DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama resigns amid health worries. April 9th 2001
Former DPJ President Hatoyama pictured resigning earlier today.
- Quote:
-
In a shock move, the President of the Democratic Party of Japan Yukio Hatoyama today announced his resignation from his post amid concerns over his health. Hatoyama had been seeing doctors for heart troubles over the last month his press officer announced a week ago. The same press officer stated that Hatoyama would also retire from his Hokkaido district. He is the grandson of former Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama and son of former Foreign Minister Iichiro Hatoyama. Hatoyama was elected to the post of DPJ President in September of 1999. His resignation comes at a time of trouble for the ruling LDP with Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori's ratings plummeting, many believed that Hatoyama would win an inevitable election which is believed to be coming soon.
Hatoyama's departure leaves a power vaccuum with many politicians within the DPJ believed to be vying for the job.

Polls not looking good for ruling LDP April 13th 2001
- Quote:
-
A poll was released today, conducted by independent poll company PollTouch which shows the current climate in Japan. Bearing in mind that DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama resigned four days ago, the poll is deemed to be accurate. If a general election were to be held tommorrow this is how the Japanese public would vote.
In the House of Representatives LDP - 29% DPJ - 40% NKP - 19% Other Parties - 12% combined Bearing in mind that 240 seats are needed for a majority in the diet, this poll would give the following results
LDP - 101 DPJ - 290 NKP - 53 Other Parties - 36 combined
This means that whomever is Hatoyama's successor would have a Representatives majority of 50 seats. With the LDP in a coaltion albeit by only a seat, and with the LDP's and PM Mori's ratings plummeting, this coalition could soon end. An election would have to be called.

Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori announces his resignation April 15th 2001
PM Mori pictured after announcing his resignation
- Quote:
-
Japan's deeply unpopular Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori has resigned, Mori who has been marred by scandals and gaffes since he took office a year ago in April. Mori was elected to the post of LDP President and Prime Minister when veteran politican and PM Keizo Obuchi suffered a fatal stroke last year. Mori's resignation comes only 6 days after DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama resigned over health issues. With both parties leaderless, the political spectrum is left wide open. Sources close to the Prime Minister say that he chose to resign after a damning poll was published in which the LDP would have lost a massive 138 seats if Mori had led the party into a general election and also with fears of his coalition collapsing.

Kono pictured in Parliament yesterday, the 24th
- Quote:
-
Yohei Kono, twice serving Foreign Minister, former Deputy Prime Minister and former Chief Cabinet Secretary has been elected in an emergency ballot of party members to be the Leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, succeeding Yoshiro Mori. Kono is widely regarded as a safe pair of hands and a stern hand on the ship of state during these troubled times. Kono is expected to be named Prime Minister tommorrow following a Parliamentary vote tonight which is sure to guarantee his election, as the LDP led coalition has agreed to vote for him, along with several opposition members. Emperor Akhito will then have to seat Kono as PM tomorrow.

New poll released May 2nd 2001
- Quote:
-
A poll has been released determining the new party matchups and figures if an election were called tommorrow. Bearing in mind it is early days yet for both Yohei Kono and Naoto Kan, but the poll is as follows conducted from 2,000 Japanese citizens.
In the House of Representatives LDP - 32% DPJ - 41% NKP - 17% Other Parties - 11% combined Bearing in mind that 240 seats are needed for a majority in the diet, this poll would give the following results
LDP - 141 + 40 seats DPJ - 267 - 33 seats NKP - 42 - 11 seats Other Parties - 30 combined - 6 seats.
Although the government has not been in session for long, they are gaining on the DPJ. It is believed that have gained the extra 3% simply by getting rid of Mori and bringing in well liked Yohei Kono. However the action needs to be taken by both sides if they are to prevail. This poll would give the DPJ a House of Representatives majority of 27 seats.
