The Battle Mansion is a very sinister place indeed. Secluded in a corner of the Frontier obscured by shadow, it is where sinister Pokemon and their trainers find refuge in the Mansion's darkness.

There are two modes that you can choose from in the Battle Mansion:
Single Mode and Double Mode.

In Single Mode, you will pick your usual team of 3 Pokemon. You will then engage in single-battle against 7 consecutive trainers with random teams. The trainers start off easy, but get harder as you go along, however, they will not be fighting exactly under the same conditions as you - they can use any species of permitted Pokemon, but your team selection will be restricted. (This will be explained below.) Your team will be fully healed in between battles, to keep yourself at full strength for the next battle.

There is a catch to battling here, though: Your entire team has to consist solely of Ghost and Dark type Pokemon! Pokemon that are not Ghost or Dark type are allowed. You can use dual-typed Pokemon, but at least one of their types must be Ghost or Dark. (For example, you can use a team with Dusclops, Rotom, and Sharpedo in it, as they all fit the conditions [the former two are Ghost types and the third is a Dark type], but you cannot use a team with Tyranitar, Spiritomb, and Hippowdon, as Hippowdon is not a Ghost or a Dark type, even though Spiritomb 'double-qualifies'.)

Double Mode is virtually identical to Single Mode, except you will be bringing in a team of 4 Pokemon instead of 3, and you will be engaging in 4-Pokemon Double Battles, instead of 3-Pokemon Single Battles. Your team will be fully healed in between each match. (And, again, your team must consist solely of Ghost and Dark type Pokemon.)

Once you have cleared 7 battles in a row, you will be taken back to the Battle Mansion lobby, and awarded with Battle Points (starting with 3, and increasing in proportion to your winning streak). Should you lose, you will have to start your streak over from the beginning.

Once you have cleared a certain number of battles and have shown your prowess as a trainer, you will be challenged to battle by the Frontier Brain here, Mansion Count Joshua. (You can only fight him in Single Mode.) Information about Joshua is detailed below.

Joshua is very much like a conglomeration of the previous three male Frontier Brains (Lionel, Landon, and Rudy). He's very easy-going and nice to get along with, gets fired up during battle, and has a good sense of honor. However, he also exhibits some unique personality aspects. He's a firm believer in Lady Luck, and will often make decisions with just a simple coin toss. He may be considered slightly sinister, seeing as he runs the darkest of the Battle Frontier's facilities, but that could be just the atmosphere of the place rubbing off on him.

The first time you fight Joshua will be for the Silver Dread Symbol. You will battle him after you defeat 20 trainers (your 3rd run through, and he'll be the last trainer). This is the team he uses against you for the first battle.

The second time you fight Joshua will be for the Gold Dread Symbol. You will battle him after you defeat 69 trainers (your 10th time through, and he'll be the last trainer). This is the team he uses against you for the second battle.

Once you defeat him both of these times, you'll be the dark master trainer of the Battle Mansion!
