Do You Consider Animals Smart?

Ok, I had an argument with my best friend stating that animals are smart (Not Intelligent) and he considers them dumb as being animals. So please sate your opinion on this.

I believe animals are smart, but not intelligent, because smart is an odd term for describing an animal, however people consider "smart" to be "intelligence", however I vie intelligence for potential into doing something such as artworks and complex systems of digging for water and food and creating a society. To me, animals are smart due to the fact they can understand things humans can't necessarily can't understand. You see, an animals smiling to us, may mean its happy, however, the fact is, it's actually aggravated and showing aggression. This applies to certain animals and to any animals that no this, they can will try to ignore that animal. but for a human that doesn't use common sense will try to pet the "smiling" creature. Also, animals can survive in environments we may find hard to adept to. Sure, the animal may have already adaptive to its environment for a very long time, but if place a group of the same species in a different environment, that animal will try to find the quickest way to get adaptive as such a human will try to find resources when shrip-wrecked on an island. Also, animals can work in packs or groups in order to survive just as we humans can do in certain situations. (Ie. Dolphins, wolves, tuna, etc.)

More info. to come. Please give me your opinion.

Only animal I consider smart is the dolphin. They have their own language, they can actually learn commands from us humans, and they're very social towards each other. They not only do what they do for survival, but they also have something that's almost similar to the way we are. Most other animals do what they do for survival, and because it's already ingrained in their mind to do from the moment they're born. No free will = no intelligence.

2. Animals like ants are more unified than us
3. Intelligence is a very relevant thing yo
