I was looking through the other thread with the same title, and I realized it was a very old topic from a year ago.

But it still got me thinking, now, a year later, are everyone's views on the newer generations the same or have people become more attached to the 4th gen since the release of Platinum?

One thing I would like to point out, as I saw in the old thread about this, someone said something about how they the new pokemon aren't good or something like that, and so they don't like this generation. I take issue with that statement.

I think what defines a pokemon as 'good' or 'bad' first of all can be split into two different categories, design and battling worth. Unfortunately some pokemon aren't good battlers because of their stats, movepool, whatever. That's something that can be generalized. Generally, though, it seems that when someone says they don't like a pokemon, it's because they don't like a pokemon's design.

Whether a pokemon is 'cool' or 'good' based off of its design is completely subjective to everyone's on preferences of what they think is 'cool' or 'cute'. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and you don't have to like every pokemon, but I don't think it's very fair to label a generation as 'bad' because you don't like some or even a lot of the pokemon designs.

I think there were some unneeded evolutions in regards to the old pokemon that sort of brought it down a tiny bit. Rhyperior, why?

I personally think people hate on the new generations because the older games were an important part of their childhood. For example, my favourite video game of all time is Paper Mario, but it is certainly not the greatest game of all time.

I think the new games are awesome, but it's not possible to recapture the genius that was the first two generations.

Pink Floyd released the album "Dark Side Of The Moon", which is considered to be the high point of their career. Everything they did after that was good, but never as great as "Dark Side". I feel the same applies for the Pokemon generations.

I think its because most of them were unneedes evolutions and legendaries, the designs weren't as good as they could of been for most of the new pokemon and the story is almost exactly the same every gen and its gets boring to most people.

Meh, I don't really like the way the graphics were put out in 4th gen. With the console switch to the DS, there was a lot of potential for great looking pokemons, however, the new pokemon seemed focused on legends and evolutions. And the names of some of the new pokemon reminded me of boss names for Megaman X7/X8. Most were just flat out terrible.

Well based off of what everyone has said, not only in this thread but just anytime it's mentioned, it has made a thought cross my mind:

Regarding the pokemon themselves, if the pokemon of the 4th Generation had been made as the 2nd Generation instead, would people still complain about how they look? Or is it just because the 2nd Generation was the '1st' new generation ever introduced and that's part of why people like the 2nd generation pokemon better, because they've got a lot more history? I'm saying that because personally, I don't think as a whole that the pokemon of the 4th generation LOOK that much worse. Of course there are some ones I don't like, but there are in EVERY generation, at least for me. The 4th generation was no different.

Now I can see the argument though for other reasons why the 2nd generation might have been better, because it introduced MANY brand new things to the games, totally new concepts that make it memorable. The day/night time cycles, the ability to breed pokemon and hatch their eggs, it brought on two brand new types, Steel and Dark. There was a lot, and it connected Kanto and Johto together so you could even go BACK to Kanto, which was an enhancement of the experience. Now by the 4th gen the experience is getting stale, I can understand that part.

I just personally am not as huge of a fan of the 2nd Generation as most seem to be. They were good, I liked a lot of the pokemon, but there were ones I also didn't like. The same goes for the 4th generation, there are ones I like and ones I don't like. I'm sure the same will be with the upcoming 5th generation, too.

And on the subject of pokemon names, I do agree that the 4th generation totally dropped the ball on MANY, many pokemon's names, I agree with that. I'm sorry, but 'Lickilicky' seems just plain lazy.

I think that what kinda messed up the new gens was the addition of so many legendaries. They make up a HUGE percentage of the new Pokemon made, it's ridiculous. I like a couple of the new designs, but I still prefer the older gens.

Too many legendaries, but that's the way it is I guess. At least there's over 400 Pokemon that aren't legendaries to use.

The fourth generation is the best so far. It has a huge amount of features, the most Pokemon, and basically improves on all of the other generations. I'm not bothered by the "too many legendaries" complaint, I can just not use them.

I don't mind all the legendaries as long as there is a good tier system in place for a balanced metagame. I remember back to the original R/B/Y where everyone would use 6 mewtwos.

I am bias towards the original Blue and Gold, but Platinum is nice too. I wasn't a fan of the third gen that much, and hopefully 5th gen will be the best.

The fourth gen didn't bring out the feelings that the first three gens (and the remake) did. I don't know if it's the nostalgia, or the fact that things in the previous games were just much more simpler...

It could be that you're not use to it being all in 3D. I admit that it did feel weird at first, but after a while I accepted it.

Nah, definitely not the 3D. It was good. I think it was the story... Really didn't keep me entertained. It might be just because I'm used to the storyline map, kid goes on adventure, meets baddies, has to stop them or the world will be destroyed, etc, etc...

I never really minded that. Sure, it might be getting a bit redundant, but it keeps me entertained. It would be terrible if they kept using Team Rocket. <_<

I enjoyed Colloseum. I know a lot of people didn't, but I liked the story, and the main character was by far the coolest-looking. And the Shadow Poke'mon were cool.

Storyline:

If anyone remembers, the original pokemon catchphrase was "Gotta catch 'em all!" well, I'd like to point out that this becomes less and less possible with every game. I mean on the original games you couldn't catch Mew, or Celebi. But on the last gen there were a ton of pokemon like Arceus and Darkrai that you either had to cheat to get or attend an event. I suppose they're still obtainable if you're willing, but you should be able to catch every pokemon.

The Pokemon:

Instead of dissing their designs I'm going to start by saying I'm sick of the recycling they have going on. Instead of creating Bidoof, couldn't they have just started the game against some Rattata? And Starly may look like more of a retarded Taillow, but it's still just the in-game Pidgey replacement. And in third gen, we have Wurmple. The fusion of Caterpie and Weedle. The creators wanted to throw in Butterfree and Beedrill, but instead gave us Wurmple and let us chose between the butterly and the other random insect.

Now onto the designs...

For three generations we had that great almost natural look for Rhyhorn and Rhydon. Then some Japanese guy who was high of caffeine, draws a Rhydon and covers it in drills. I'd say the best one must be Mismagius (typo?) but even that isn't great. What really annoys me with those though, is that they ruin the pre-evolutions. I can hardly use Magmar and Electabuzz anymore.

Now for the rip-off pokemon. Plusle/Minum = Pichu. Gulpin = Grimer. Beautifly = Butterfree. Turtwig = Bulbasaur. (There is a huge list, but it's past 2am here.)

I will say this though, Lucario and Darkrai were both pretty epic. Shame they put Lucario in brawl and tried passing it off as Mewtwo.

Evil Groups:

On the newer gen games, the evil teams play a much bigger role. This wouldn't be too much of a problem except that they're so bloody lame.
Team Magma: Want to blow up volcanoes and expand the land.
Team Aqua: Want to expand the Oceans.
Team Galactic: Want to control space and time so that they can take over the world.
Now, compare these teams to good ol' Team Rocket who were about one thing only: Being badass pokemon-thieving gangsters.

And to finish...

On the very first games, we had Mew the rarest of all pokemon and Metwo the most powerful of all pokemon. Apart from those, there were the legendary birds.
D/P introduced us to the god of all pokemon, the pokemon of time and the pokemon of space. Aswell as Giratina, the master of the other dimension.
R/S gave us the pokemon who ruled the sea and the pokemon who ruled the land. (Based on the biblical Behemoth and Leviathan.)

How did we go from two extremely powerful creatures, to bloody gods?

tl;dr: The game lost it's win because now your average Pokémon isn't badass, and your average villain isn't badass either. Needs moar badass.
