Venomoth @ Choice Scarf
Nature: Modest
Ability: Tinted Lens
EVs: 252 Spe, 252 SpA
-Bug Buzz
-Psychic
-U-Turn
-Sleep Powder

--------------------
Venomoth's ability, Tinted Lens, is what makes this set so scary. With an average speed and special attack stat, Choice Specs sets have been made before. However, Choice Scarfed Venomoth opens up a whole new dimension: the ability not to be revenge killed so easily.

Hitmonlee is one good example of something that threatened Venomoth before, as most Hitmonlees posessed a Choice Scarf. As Hitmonlee would switch in, Venomoth could Bug Buzz, causing damage enough to 2HKO but not enough to threaten it out. This was true for many other sweepers: Venomoth's ability was limited to causing damage on the switch-ins, and thus, it's power as a sweeper was wasted.

Take Ninetails, Rotom, Scarflee, and Swellow...these could switch in with impunity as they knew that they could cause more damage to the switch-in than Venomoth could cause to them. Even Choice Specs sets were limited because of lower speed.

Ghost, Steel, Flying, Fire or Poison types resist Bug Buzz. There, they can be blasted with a Neutral hit. For some reason, many people just don't recognize Venomoth's ability. When they see a Venomoth tear a hole through Rotom, they simply assume they can switch again, that Rotom just has low defenses, and that Venomoth was probably Specsed. When you switch in a type resistant pokemon in and they take over 50% damage, most trainers are shocked and they tend to make bad switches. Switch in to Rotom, to Ninetails, to Swellow...again and again and again they switch for no apparent reason, just to avoid the KO from a Venomoth's "resisted" hit.

Claydol, Hypno and other Psychic walls are hit hard by Bug Buzz, and it would give more pain to switch unless your foe has a dedicated special sponge such as Lanturn, Clefable or a 4x resistance such as Toxicroak. Otherwise, they will end up taking fairly high amounts of damage. Another thing is the high speed coupled with Sleep Powder. This will nail the Clefable switch if they have not activated Toxic Orb, as well as putting to sleep a counter to Venomoth that you might not want to deal with.

U-Turn is another handy move, as it can hit a Clefable switch and send in a Fighting type, or a Drifblim switch can be countered by Rotom. If they don't switch, you still move first and you get a chance to guess what they will use, and send in an appropriate counter. What I like to do is simply put them to sleep the first time Venomoth comes out, then mess around with them a while. The threat of Bug Buzz will keep them from sending in sweepers once they realize Venomoth is scarfed (they usually do once a fast pokemon is outspeeded) and U-Turn can destroy their switch-in walls or tanks by sending in appropriate counters or threats.

Overall, Scarf Venomoth is a great addition to any offensive team in UU. It prevents other sweepers from switching in with impunity and resistances, and breaks down walls with Sleep and good use of U-Turn. The only problem is relatively powerful tanks, but these can be torn down by U-Turn, again. The kind of offensive team Venomoth should be on is the kind with good coverage, since these can take down the walls Venomoth hates.
