This is a guide geared to those new at the other side of pokemon: competitive battling. This guide will teach those new to training for competition what EVs are and how to EV Train. It may seem confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it'll be second nature to you.
What are EVs?
Spoiler: click to toggle EV stands for Effort Values, or experience I guess you could say that you worked for. Effort Values are vital in most competitive battles, helping you out speed the opponent, withstand a devastating blow or just beating the crap out of the opponent.
How do I get EVs?
Spoiler: click to toggle You can obtain EVs by battling against a specific pokemon. Each pokemon has and Effort Vaule point range from one to three. Let's use the example of Bidoof. Bidoof gives one HP effort vaule point. After defeating the bidoof, one HP EV will be given to each battling pokemon. Also to be mentioned is the Experience Share. A pokemon holding one will not only get half the experience from the pokemon, but all the EV point(s) it gives out.
Is there a limit to how much I can EV train?
Spoiler: click to toggle Shortly, yes. Each pokemon can gain a total of 510 EV points. That's not all though. Each stat can only get 255 EVs. This is an unreasonable number because of the next question.
So does every point count as one stat point?
Spoiler: click to toggle No. Every 4 points gives you one stat point. This is why 255 is an unreasonable number while 252 would be much more logical. Since 252 is divisible by four, it's a reasonable number. 252 divided by four is sixty-three, which means that you will gain sixty-three stat points in the stat that you EV trained in.
What if I make a mistake while EV training? Is there a way to reverse it?
Spoiler: click to toggle If you mess up, no need to worry. There's a way to reverse the effects of EV training but the way how can come in a rare to find berry. There are six berries known as "correction berries". They are: Pomeg Berry, Kelpsy Berry, Qualot Berry, Hondew Berry, Grepa Berry, and Tamato Berry. They lower EV trained stats by ten in HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed respectively.
Wow, fighting 252 Bidoofs seems like a lot of work. Is there any way I can make it go by faster?
Spoiler: click to toggle As a matter of fact, yes there is. Instead of fighting 252 Bidoofs to get all the HP EVs you want, instead you can equip certain items. These items can double or add an extra 4 EVs per Bidoof you fight. Double Macho Brace - This item doubles the ammount of EVs you earn per pokemon, but lowers your speed in battle. Let's say you face a Starly (+1 Speed) and the pokemon battling has a Macho Brace equip. Instead of gaining one speed EV, you will get 2 since 1x2=2. Now let's say you're training in Special Attack. You're at the Resort surfing in the pond to fight Golduck. Each Golduck is worth 2 Special Attack EVs, so if you battle with the Macho Brace, instead of getting 2 EVs, you'll get 4 since 2x2=4. How to obtain the Macho Brace - To obtain the Macho Brace, you have to have the three Burmy forms. Once you have all three in your party, travel to Pastoria City and talk to the man who wants to see them. He'll give you the Macho Brace for showing all of them to him.
Add 4 Power Items - There are special items called power items. These items add 4 EVs per battle depending on what Power Item you're using. Here's a list of the power items and what they add to. Power Weight - +4 HP Power Bracer - +4 Attack Power Belt - +4 Defense Power Lens - +4 Special Attack Power Band - +4 Special Defense Power Anklet - +4 Speed These items are probably the best items to use while EV training in multiple stats also. If you equip the Power Bracer and go and fight Bidoof, not only will you gain the 1 HP EV from the Bidoof, but all the additional 4 ATTACK EVs from the Power Bracer. So you get two stats quickly.
Even with those items, it'll take to long for me to be intersted. Is there any other ways to make it take less time?
Spoiler: click to toggle There are actually two more ways to increase EV training. They are: Vitamins and Pokerus. Vitamins - When you go to the Veilstone store, on the second floor they sell Vitamins. Wonder why they're so expensive at the price of $9,800? It's because they increase the speed of EV training tremendously. It's a great way to kick off the start of the process. Each vitamin add 10 EVs to a stat. You can only go up to 100 EVs though. So if you start fresh, you can only give each pokemon 10 Vitamins per stat. Here's a list of the vitamins and what they raise. HP Up - +10 HP Protein - +10 Attack Iron - +10 Defense Calcium - +10 Special Attack Zinc - +10 Special Defense Carbos - +10 Speed
But still, it seems like a lot of work even with all of that. What's that thing you mentioned earlier? Pokerus?
Spoiler: click to toggle Well Pokerus is a virus that doubles the amount of EVs earned per battle. So let's say that you face a Bidoof with a pokemon that is infected with Pokerus. Instead of gaining 1 HP EV, it will gain 2 since 1x2=2. Works similar to the Macho Brace except doesn't lower your speed an take up a the valuable item slot. So let's say you have the Power Weight on, and your pokemon has Pokerus. When you battle a Bidoof, you will gain *WAITING FOR ANWER*
