Warlocks and Witches

Friday 8th May 1987

“It appears that the Council now considers me capable of taking on greater threats. As such, they have assigned me to eradicate a rogue warlock who is currently manipulating a small village into a mass sacrifice, which will in turn increase his power tenfold. I have been advised to destroy his dark magic focus, which is what gives him his power; without it, all warlocks and witches die. In addition, I have been provided with a white magic amulet by the Council, which should protect me from the warlock to some degree. In essence, what it does is that it means that the warlock cannot kill me with one spell, nor can he do it at a distance; any of his dark magic pertaining to watching me from a distance will fail, and so will have to attack me up front.”

Monday 11th May 1987

“I had been invited with the warlock to talk, and so I thought it an ideal occasion to hit him when he wasn’t expecting it. It turned out, he had enchanted the room so that no-one could attack him until he attacked first. After the warlock spent about half an hour elaborating on how his plan couldn’t fail and how I should join him, I refused, at which point he attacked me, flinging some kind of black lightning bolt at me that sapped at my strength. Fortunately, I was still able to see clearly enough to tell that the throne he had previously been sitting on was his dark magic focus, and after chucking a grenade on it, the throne was shattered. Intriguingly, the warlock’s death exactly mirrored the destruction of his focus; he shattered as well. Nonetheless, I get the feeling that dark magic is a wide ranging field, and that I have seen but a glimpse.”

Poltergeists

Sunday 12th July 1987

“A series of strange events has befallen the Twin Unicorns Mansion, and I have been sent to investigate. From what I have already been informed, I have a suspicion that the mansion suffers from some form of haunting and a potentially malevolent one at that; the current owner is currently attempting to sell the mansion with no success due to his fear of the events that have taken place there. While a lot of the events are minor and are only really small scares (bleeding walls and strange sounds are the two that stand out the most), there have also been a few events where the haunting has turned harmful; the owner managed to avoid most of the thrown objects in one haunting, but had his left leg crushed when the piano in the room moved across the floor and pinned him to the wall. I have packed a full set of equipment, since I do not know what I shall need to defeat this threat.”

Tuesday 14th July 1987

“After spending one uneventful night in the mansion, I had begun to suspect that the haunting could be incorrect. However, since I am living in the mansion until such time as I can clear up this case, I am sure that there will be plenty of time to be certain. So far, the only event that I could assume was a result of haunting influences was that my lunchtime sandwich was not where I left it after I washed my hands, having moved to the dining room; however, this may well be absent mindedness, and cannot really be thought to be proof.”

Wednesday 15th July 1987

“It appears that there is in fact a haunting. I say this due to the only evidence I have so far, namely that I went to sleep in the master bedroom, and awoke in the same bed inside the wine cellar. I would not mind so much if it wasn’t for the damage done to the doorframes as the ghost moved the bed around the mansion; it is a wonder that I did not wake up. Since I can now assume there to be a ghost, I am going to start investigating potential reasons as to why this may be.”

Thursday 23rd July 1987

“I have been unable to write in this journal for the past week or so, primarily because the poltergeist had hidden in. I finally found it inside the wine cellar again. I have to assume the ghost is most powerful in the wine cellar; it is where I have seen the strongest effects. Despite that, the ghost is powerful elsewhere; I have been unable to leave the mansion since I arrived, since whenever I attempt to open a window or door the poltergeist holds it shut. I have even attempted to smash windows, but the poltergeists stops whatever it is that I attack said window with. I currently am planning to investigate the wine cellar further; while I have investigated the whole mansion unsuccessfully, the latest haunting inside the wine cellar leads me to believe the poltergeist may be hidden there. This haunting was a circle surrounded by the words “He Who Sleeps Here Shall Not Be Disturbed”, written in blood.”

Friday 24th July 1987

“I could not find any hidden areas inside the wine cellar, but eventually resorted to breaking down the wall, starting with the wall upon with the circle and bloody words had appeared. It appears that this guess was correct, since I soon discovered a skeleton bricked inside the wall as if they had been placed there during the mansion’s construction. Upon finding this, the poltergeist flew into a rage, and I sustained several cuts and bruises from flung wine bottles. While attempting to remove the skeleton, I accidentally separated the skull from the spine; once this had happened, the haunting stopped. I am not sure what this means, but found only one more thing of note; etched into the wall behind the skeleton was the words “I Will Not Be Your Sacrifice” over and over.

Wednesday 9th August 1987

“From further experiences, I have concluded that the best way to dispose of a poltergeist is to destroy the object that it is haunting. This seems to free the spirit to move on to the afterlife, whatever that may be. In the Twin Unicorns Mansion case, the poltergeist did not get destroyed through the destruction of its body as I falsely assumed; rather, it was the corpse that was that particular poltergeist’s haunted object.”

Dragons

Sunday 13th September

“I have received another letter from “My Friend”, and put it here for reference.

“Dear Collector,

I have further information for you, pertaining to the mythical beasts known as dragons. They are also uncommon in your country, knowing well enough to stay hidden there. However, I have had experience with both the English and Chinese dragons, and it is only truly the English ones you should be concerned about.

The Chinese Dragon is a somewhat tamer beast than the English one. They appear similar to the images of Chinese dragons in literature and art, and are only a threat if they consider you to be rude, which is not too difficult to avoid. The Chinese dragons hold a large amount of wisdom, but do not share it freely; in order to get the wisdom, you often have to figure it out yourself with the dragon gently helping rather than it directly telling you, a process that can take weeks for the more complicated revelations.

The English Dragon, on the other hand, likes two things; eating and wealth. I have discovered that an English Dragon, when encountered, will demand one of the two, and I advise choosing wealth since feeding the dragon means that you will be eaten. English dragons live in the various caves, only spreading their wings rarely and when they are certain they will not be seen. All English Dragons possess a large set of wings, tough scales (albeit not always green), and the ability to breathe a cone of fire. However, they also all possess the weakness in their scales of a soft point in the centre lower chest which, when pierced, stabs them through the heart and kills them.

I hope this information finds you well.

Werewolves

Tuesday 6th October 1987

“I add this new entry having spent the last two months performing research for the Council due to injuries sustained during the Twin Unicorns Mansion case. It is a slightly more pleasant job that being an in-the-field researcher, although not as thrilling. Thanks to this job, I have now compiled a dossier of information on both Werewolves and Vampires (to be written up following this entry). Werewolves appear to come in two forms; bestials and lucids. Bestials are those that do not know they are werewolves, and as a result have no control over their transformation, changing during the two night before full moon, the night during which full moon is present, and the two nights after full moon. Lucids, on the other hand, know that they are werewolves, and as a result have access to all three werewolf forms (namely, that of human, wolf and half-human half-wolf beast), as opposed to the bestials, who only have access to their natural form and the beast form. Lucids do not change during the full moon; rather, they can change any night except for the one when there is no moon in the sky, and have control over when they change. However, the lycanthropy still makes them want to kill; it just means they control when and how, making them much more dangerous opponents. The only weakness I have discovered for a werewolf of either kind are silver bullets; these only kill that particular werewolf, and any that werewolf has infected remain infected. I also found an entry referring to “distilled moonlight”, but have been unable to discern what it is; if it truly exists, it is a much better weapon to use since it “cures” both the werewolf who is treated with it, and any that werewolf has infected. The only other problem with a werewolf is that its bite is infectious, although I found out that it is possible to cure lycanthropy if the victim is treated before the next full moon, which is when the disease truly takes hold and the first time a werewolf transforms into its beast form. The cure is a simple potion of boiled monkshood plants.”

Vampires

Tuesday 6th October 1987

“I have also discovered a wealth of information of vampires. It turns out that not all vampires are the same; there are actually three lines of vampires, which may well explain the discrepancies in the mythology. The first line of vampires, the Alemn, are the oldest, and possess the ability to charm and hypnotise people by eye contact. However, they cannot be reflected in any surface, where as the other two lines can, and so tend to not keep any reflective surfaces near them. The second line of vampires, the Tawne, are the youngest and possess a kinship with animals, to the point that they can transform at will into both a bat and a wolf. However, this animal kinship extends to the point that animals will generally act overwhelmingly friendly to a Tawne, and it is not unusual to see them followed by a small pack of dogs. The third line of vampires, the Sysyph (pronounced si-sif) are the most dangerous, since they possess dark magic, not unlike the warlocks and witches. This would not be so much of a problem if it was not for the fact that their focus is themselves, making destroying it a harder task. However, this makes them sensitive to any religious symbology or symbol of faith, regardless of faith, as long as the wielder actually believes in that faith. (Actual effectiveness in following said faith does not matter, as long as the individual truly believes, and does not even need to be a religion as such; there are stories of repelling vampires with the caduceus and another with an alchemical symbol.) This sensitivity causes them to be uncomfortable in the presence of such symbols, and burns their flesh if it comes into contact with it. Unfortunately, there are only two ways to identify a particular line; either notice one of the unique traits, or get close enough to be able to see the puncture marks in their neck from when they were turned. The Alemn’s punctures turns a deep black for about half a centimetre around each puncture; the Tawne’s turns a purple bruised colout, and the Sysyph’s turn a greeny-yellow colour.

All vampires also share common features. The most notable of these is their dependence on blood. They must drink blood every week, or else fall into a deep sleep from which they only wake once fed blood. This blood does not have to be human, or even fresh, although it is preferable; some vampires have sustained themselves on animal blood through some form of conscience, and I personally know one vampire who works as a hospital nurse and feeds from the blood bags. However, the majority of vampires have no such moral code and take their blood from humans; this is performed via biting the jugular. Vampires also hate sunlight, since it burns them, although not as fast as one would assume; in the full midday sun, a vampire still takes a minute to burn up completely. I believe it is the UV component that does this damage, since vampires have been able to spend up to ten minutes in the sun with a suitably strong sun-block. Vampires also are placed into the same deep sleep as when they have not had blood by a stake through the heart, although only the part of the shaft that rests inside the heart must be wooden, not the whole stake. This is reversed via the removal of the stake. Also, vampires die if beheaded, and respond to garlic by fleeing. (My contact in the hospital says that garlic acts as if one had an extremely bad migraine, getting worse as one gets closer.) However, all vampires possess super human levels of strength, and do not suffer from fatigue; while they may only match you in a sprint, you will get tired before they do. All vampires can also create new vampires; it is the same as if they were drinking a normal human, except that they must then feed the human some of their blood and will it to happen.”
