Introduction and Sign Up Information

“I write to you to inform you that your attendance is asked for by the Crown, at the date of the 16th of March, at a time no later than 2 p.m at the Rosethorn Hall in London, where upon you will be offered an opportunity few have even considered or been capable of considering. When you arrive, please ask at reception for the Council Of Wardens and you will be escorted to the meeting.

-The Council Of Wardens”

Thus, with the reception of this letter, you did attend the meeting, and were enlightened to a world not of our own, where monsters roam and seeing is not necessarily believing, and offered a position in the Council Of Wardens as a member of the Warden’s Hands, a team set up specifically to oppose these monsters when they threaten the citizenry of Great Britain and the world beyond, wherever it may take you. Each of you was provided your own private area within the base of operations, an old mansion in the countryside outside London named the Grey Knight Mansion, and it is from there that you wage your war with the hidden things.
______________________________________________________________________________________

Right then, that’s the fluff, to give you the basics of setting. The rp is to be somewhat more modern than that makes out; it’s just that the Victorian style is a leftover from the Council Of Warden’s creation. In essence, anyone who joins will be part of this new group, the Warden’s Hands, and from there you will fight the various monsters. If you fancy joining, please reply with your character and position amongst the team (mostly for other people’s references; I’ll collect them into a single post somewhere in order to keep it easier to reference) in the other thread I've created (if only to keep this clean and functional); I’m already dibsing the team researcher (as well as the character dabbling in alchemy and, given the nature of the team at start, probably the one who sifts through the reports to figure out which particular strange news stories are likely to lead to monsters to hunt.) Weaponry and armour /are/ available, although a lot of what the Council provides (along with a solid financial backing and the official recognition of other British forces to not interfere with the work that the Hands do) are somewhat less standard than current military technology, to take into account the unique nature of the foes the Hands will face.

Anyway, I’m going to be using this thread for setting information as well as sign up, so be forewarned that there’s probably going to be a decent bit of information here. Also, forgive any double posting (or triple posting, or quadruple…) since it means I can differentiate the different chunks on information better.

Bestiary

“I write in this journal of the things that I have seen, witnessed, and fought, during my tenure as one of the Council of Wardens, so that anybody else who has to fight these things will have the benefit of my knowledge. I have written them in the order that I have encountered them, but recognise that this may result in difficulties should one need to find a particular creature rapidly, hence why the second page has been dedicated to a reference card to be updated every time a new creature is entered within these pages. Please take care not to lose this card, as it may be important in the future. In addition, should you make a new monster entry into this journal, please leave a space of 4 pages between one monster and the next as I have done for the addition of new information as it is revealed.”

Black Dogs

Friday 13th June 1986

"I have had a strange experience today, which I shall attempt to place into words in order to make some sense of it. I was walking on the moors in the early morning, as I often do; it is both good exercise, and somewhat picturesque. It was a particularly foggy day, and I pay no heed to the strange encounter at first. While strolling, in a wooded area of the moors I saw a black dog that appeared to be watching me. Although I had a mild feeling of unease, I considered the dog to be of no threat until I drew closer, which is when I noticed the dog had a slightly ethereal quality to it, as if it were not made of flesh but a extremely viscous liquid. The most noticeable thing about the dog at that point, however, was that its eyes were a solid single shade of red. I must say that I was afraid of the creature, and since it had put a significant spook into me, I fled, whereupon the creature gave chase. This continued for what must have been quarter of an hour, with me risking glances over my shoulder to see whether I had lost the beast regularly, albeit with no success. Eventually, I glanced over my shoulder to check once more, and the dog had vanished as if it has never existed. Significantly chilled, I returned home, only to find that a letter was already waiting for me, informing me that the Council of Wardens was aware of the event, and that they were interested in recruiting me.

I think I shall reply, if only to understand this further."

Saturday 5th September 1986

"I returned to the moors once more, prepared with a shotgun and several buckshot shells. Once again, I strolled, taking into account the beauty of the moors; it was another foggy day. After about half an hour of strolling, the black dog appeared again, but I have had enough experiences that I was no longer as frightened. Instead, I merely levelled the shotgun at the dog and fired, only to watch the shells flow through the dog’s hind and out the other side, lending weight to my theory that the dog is in fact liquid. The dog obviously sensed that I was more of a threat than last time and attacked me while I reloaded the shotgun for a second attempt, sinking its teeth into my leg. The wound has been bandaged now, but at the time it was quite painful; while the wound looks no worse than a normal dog bite, it hurt a lot more at the time, leading me to theorise that the black dog’s bite contains some agent that causes additional pain. Nevertheless, I finished reloading and fired at the dog again. Due to the range I was firing at, I hit most of the dog, but while most of the shot passed through the dog’s liquid form once more, some of it hit those bizarre red eyes of its, which caused the dog to back away, howling. The redness of the eyes seemed to spread outwards, covering the entire dog’s skin, before it “melted away” into a small reddish puddle, which I collected in a vial for later study. However, once I returned to my home and had been treated, the vial was empty, leading me to believe that this substance cannot survive outside of its inhuman host.”

Zombies

Wednesday 24th June 1986

"Having been accepted into the Council, they asked me to perform the first of no doubt many tasks for them. As I am new, they asked me to look in to a minor issue over at the St. Philomena’s Graveyard, since it was not too much trouble. They suggested that I take with me a good revolver, so I holstered my Magnum .357; this advice turned out to be good advice. Heading inside the grounds, I soon saw what the problem was; there were 6 corpses who happened to be walking around, a not entirely standard event. Seeing this, I responded as any sensible individual should, and fired at the closest. While the first bullet impacted in the zombie’s right shoulder, it only seemed to draw the group’s attention rather than do any damage. The second pierced its lung to no effect, but the third shot drove straight through the eye socket into the brain, causing the dead to return to the natural state of the dead. I continued to fire at the zombie’s heads from this discovery, with further shots seeming to show that the bullet does not have to hit the head as in popular culture, but rather it needs to actually pierce the brain. Once the dead were no longer mobile, I returned them to their graves and left. During the fight, I sustained one injury, a bite to the shoulder, but I feel no ill effects, suggesting that popular culture is wrong when claiming that a zombie bite turns the victim into another zombie. Nevertheless, I will make sure I get my shots to be sure."

Thursday 25th June 1986

"I was contacted by the Council once more regarding St. Philomena’s Graveyard. It appears the zombies I killed are mobile once more. Returning, I found this to be the case, and disposed of them once more. Checking the graves for any evidence of why the dead were having their rest disturbed, I found what appears to be an identical occult carving in each of the tombstones. After taking a charcoal rubbing, I chipped the carving off, and since I have had no sign of undead disturbances at St. Philomena’s.”

Harpies

Friday 27th November 1986
"The council have asked me to travel to the Scottish Highlands to deal with reports of a “flying menace” to the farmlife. Upon arriving, I immediately canvassed several of the farmers, who had similar stories of a naked or near-naked female form, with grotesque features, wings sprouting from their backs and sharp claws on each finger and toe. I am glad that I brought a .40 S&W, since it appears I may need stronger firepower than I usually carry for this particular meeting.”

Sunday 29th November 1986

"After staking out the farmlands for a large portion of the night, I saw one of the harpies. Rather than fire indiscriminately, I decided to watch the harpy, who swooped down onto one of the sheep and snatched it up with her feet, before flying away. I followed the harpy at a distance, and soon found its nest; a group of three then tore the sheep apart. Rather than attempt a direct assault, I memorised the cave the harpies were in and returned to the inn. When I attack, I will use the local Council stash to make my assault more effective."

Tuesday 1st December 1986

"I snuck back to the cave during daylight, to find all of the harpies asleep. From this, I can only conclude that they are nocturnal. I quietly rolled an incendiary grenade into the cave, which rapidly dealt with the three harpies. Of particular interest was that they left behind three human looking (albeit ugly) corpses; it seemed that the fire only damaged their wings, which I must assume is their weakness. I quickly left after taking a small sample of flesh for analysis, which later proved to be human, since I did not want to risk being charged for murder."

Wednesday 6th May 1992

"I have received enough reports to suggest that my conclusion that harpies are nocturnal was wrong. Rather, it seems that they can move during both daylight and night, and can choose to sleep whenever is most convenient for them.”

Wurms

Monday 4th January 1987

"I have been informed that farm animals have been disappearing near Black Shine Caves, and have been dispatched to investigate. I am starting in the caverns, since it seems a likely hiding place."

Friday 8th January 1987

"After 3 days of spelunking, I believe I have found the culprit. It is a wurm, and possesses a cat’s head and front paws before it’s tail drags on for another ten feet. I am unsure how to harm it, but have noticed that it moves extremely rapidly; about twice as fast as I can run. As such, I would rather wait for it to sleep and restrain it first."

Saturday 9th January 1987

"I caught the wurm sleeping. After securing it with pitons and rope, it finally noticed when I swung my fire axe into an eye, and woke up rapidly. This would have been fine, if it was for the fact it wriggled free of confinement, leading me to believe that the wurm has some supernatural means of escaping any confinement. It pounced on me and wrapped itself around me, squeezing the very life out of me. I was fortunate in that my flailing of the fire axe struck the final foot of its tail; while the axe bounced off everywhere else, it cut the tail clean off and the creature died shortly afterwards."

Saturday 3rd February 1996

"I have fought enough wurms to know that, while they may all differ in abilities, they always have three things in common. Firstly, they cannot be confined by any means. Secondly, they can move rapidly; the slowest I have seen still matched my running speed. Thirdly, they cannot be harmed except to remove the last foot of their tail, which kills all wurms. Aside from this, they all tend to differ.”

Yeti

Sunday 15th March 1987

"It appears that my records are becoming known amongst the Council. I received the following letter, which I place here for the purposes of recording information.

“Dear Collector,

It has come to my attention that you are starting to compile information on a variety of creatures we oppose and study. I heartily endorse this project, and give here a summary of my findings of the “Yeti”, a creature you, while unlikely to encounter over there in Britain, may well still encounter should you travel abroad.

The Yeti is a humanoid figure, about 8 feet tall and covered in a thick white fur. Its habitat appears to be that on anywhere where the temperature is regularly below freezing. I encountered mine amongst the Himalayas. The creature, while not rapid, is near impossible to see in the snow until it gets close to you, at which point it mauls you with its claws. Most of the damage comes not from the claws, which are quite blunt, but from the force behind the blow. Fortunately, all Yeti’s are incapable of dealing with the heat, and should they be exposed to it, they soon die. My personal aptitude is towards setting them on fire, but you may decide otherwise.

Mummy

Wednesday 8th April 1987

"I am being given my first foreign assignment. It appears that a single mummy is loose in the Egyptian desert, and the Council wants it killed before it causes any actual harm. They have advised me that mummies fare extremely poorly against fire, which I have taken into account. I will travel by ship both there and back."

Wednesday 15th April 1987

"After a fairly eventful journey, I have arrived. I collected flare guns and incendiary grenades from the local Council cache, before tracking down the mummy and killing it. Finding it turned out to be not as difficult, but killing it was. The mummy has two potent abilities. Firstly, once you are in it’s grip it will not let go unless it gets severely wounded; in my case, this release was granted due to the flare gun finally hitting. The second, and more potent, ability, is some kind of “curse”; when I initially attacked the mummy, I found myself to be having dire luck, missing constantly and falling over my own feet. I believe this is due to the mummies’ influence.”

Sea Monsters

Thursday 9th April 1987

“It appears that I attract the attention of creatures regardless of what I do. Today, a wet tentacle gripped the side of the deck, but with the help of some other crew members, I managed to force it off so we could continue on our way unhindered. After this, I made a phone call back to the Council, who suggested I use fire, or if at all possible, pierce the creature’s heart. I am now concealing a torch (the old fashioned type) and a lighter on my person.”

Friday 10th April 1987

“The tentacle came back again. Rather than shove it overboard as before, I lit my torch and struck it with that; the tentacle suffered a deep wound as the fire burnt its way through the flesh, stopping only once the tentacle pulled itself under the sea.”

Saturday 11th April 1987

“The sea monster is quite tenacious. This time, it came to the surface, and grabbed the ship with several tentacles. This creature was similar to the mythological kraken, although I had already been warned that not all sea monsters are the same. However, I threw explosives down the beast’s gullet, and I assume they detonated near the thing’s heart, since it let out an enormous shriek and went limp, sinking back under the waves.”
