Off the Norwegian Coast (Norwegian Sea) - 1200 hrs

The air is cold as the Task Force heads north, into German patrolled waters. The fleet has remained undetected so far during the transit, a lucky break but for how long? The waters in the area are near freezing, and the latest met reports have sighted ice sheets and the occasional iceberg further to the north. The data given to your fleet by the Admiralty indicates the last known patrol areas of two T class submersibles, as well as the rendezvous area for picking up the resistance sea plane. A code has been given to you, once broadcast, the resistance will launch the aircraft within 12 minutes, however the range of the aircraft is severely limited due to a shortage of fuel. A task force ship must be within the designated area moving at slow speed or less, within 18 minutes after the launch, or the plane will be forced to ditch. The aircraft can also land on the Aircraft carrier regardless of the CVs speed. HMS Manchester and HMS Eskimo have been delayed enroute due to a fueling rendezvous error, however they are expected to arrive between 30 and 60 minutes from now.

The visibility across the sea is decent, roughly 20,000 yards, but the seas are rough, with 12 ft swells rolling smaller boats enough to impact their gunnery. The seas are calmer closer to the ice, but that brings with it different hazards.

Rough Seas extend from south of map, to top of extraction zone.

-1 to all CA/CL firing
BB no effect
North of extraction zone, Sea State 3

The deck below Dawson's feet shook as the bow of the Furious smashed into another oncoming wave. Spray arcs upwards and back towards the bridge, but none manages to close the distance to Dawson's position. A smile stretched across Dawson's face, this was his element, the cold northern waters of the Atlantic. After the fleet's previous work near the Vietnamese coast, the cooler waters were a welcome respite for Dawson.

Moving to the far edge of the exterior bridge, Dawson looked back along the lines of the Furious. Amidships, he spotted one of his vessel's scout planes being readied for launch on the catapult. Behind his ship, the large forms of the Iron Duke and Surprise followed in line astern. The Iron Duke had proved to be a tough ship, and a vicious brawler in the fleet's last outing. The Surprise was new, and as of yet, untested, but based on what Dawson could tell of the vessel, would most likely prove to be a valuable addition to the task force.

Dawson signaled for more speed, and the Furious pushed forward harder, smoke pouring from her twin funnels.

"Miserable weather," Hale commented, as he watched from inside the command bridge as Dawson's Furious rode through another large wave. The wave continued past the Furious, and Hale braced himself. The wave crashed against the bow of Iron Duke, the impact a light rumble throughout the vessel.

The screws turned over as fast as they could, the Surprise's Kampon boilers running at maximum pressure to push the Battleship along the Norwegian coast. The roiling seas were of no consequence to the massive beast of a ship but they gave a gloomy and lonely atmosphere despite the large fleet moving in formation in front of Edwards.

Taggart shuffled around the weather deck, messing with the toggle on his deck jacket and the clasps of his boat cloak. He remained quite adamant at wearing the traditional clothing. The Kanzler rocked comparatively gently as the Heather and Épée cut the swells at the tops and violently dropped into the lows. Taggart sort of missed being on the Destroyers in rough seas, a calling to his youth.

The lookouts continued their work in the bitter cold as the radar sets on his various ships kept an electronic eye along the skies and the seas.

The biplane lumbered into the air from amidships and climbed into the grey skies. Another swell caught Furious just under the top of her bow, sending more spray flying back as the ship continued to surge forward through the seas.

"Detach the Surprise, she can attempt rendezvous with the T Class and grab their intel, then proceed north to rejoin. Let's keep the Radars cold for now, we have eyes in the skies for once."

"Keep pace with the flag as best we can," Hale instructed, before returning his attention to the charts. The waters were deep here, which was good for the fleet's ability to maneuver, but the rendezvous point was perilously close to land, which meant the potential for air attack and shore battery fire, in addition to whatever else the Jerrie's had on the waves.

A noise makes Taggart glance outside, in time to see 20 seafires from the Reliance pass over head. Charging north at speed, the noise of their Merlin engines screaming in the cold air makes its way down to the decks of the ships below.

"Still nothing from Taggart's group sir."

"Where the hell are the damnable Krauts today?" exclaimed Dawson, perhaps louder then he intended.

"Running scared 'cause they heard Osprey was cominn for 'em!" a nearby hand shouts.

Dawson doesn't bother to quash the cheers that flooded the bridge. It was a welcome sign that the crew was in good spirits.

One of the squadrons of Seafires reports three contacts, but fails to make a visual ID. All are moving south on the same heading. Radar operators on the Iron Duke gain a return on their radar sets from one of them as well.

Radio calls funnel into the carrier's combat operations center, multiple contacts.
Onboard the Iron Duke, Furious, and Surprise, lookouts spot and begin tracking two cruisers and two destroyers to the east of the approaching Island.
The northernmost targets are too far to be seen, but the seafires report a heavy squadron, two light battleships and a battlecruiser, moving south at ten knots.

The guns on the three capital ships open fire on the closing cruiser group. The destroyer finds itself under heavy fire as it dodges around columns of water sent up by the Iron Duke's main battery, but its small size allows it to escape unharmed from the unseen attacker. The Hipper is not as lucky, as 15 inch shells from the Furious make contact with the large cruiser. Several hits occur, but two are incredibly damaging. The roof of B Turret it penetrated by a shell, shrapnel filling the inside of the enclosed space and knocking it out of commission instantly. Another artillery round crashes into the deck near the aft torpedo launcher, knocking it off its mount, and sending the aircraft crane falling forward, where it collapses onto the forward torpedo launcher, jamming it in place. A fire breaks out from the aft torpedos as batteries ignite.

The Surprise has similar success against the Nurnberg light cruiser. As shells from the cruisers engage the surprise with no success, the battleship's 16.1 inch broadside ranges in on the smaller cruiser, eventually raking it with fire. As shells rip through the structure of the cruiser, severely damaging it, critical hits knock out engine rooms and the steering gear, along with damage control parties stationed througout the ship. The cruiser veers to the left in an uncontrolled turn, as her crew fight to make the ship respond to steering inputs.

"Solid hits on the Cruiser."

Dawson suppressed a smile, good gunnery was a welcome turn of events after the Furious' less then stellar performance in her previous engagement. Still, some hits wouldn't spell the end of the cruiser, and Edwards was all alone without any support. Diverting the fleet wasn't really an option, the primary objective remained to the north, and reports from the seafire flight showed significant opposition in the area as well.

Making up his mind, Dawson began issuing new orders.

The bridge was abuzz with activity as reports from the carrier came in of new sightings to the North. The Iron Duke would stay with the flag, the Surprise would have to handle the cruisers by herself, although given her gunnery results, that did not seem to be much of a problem for the large vessel.

Dawson watched as the gun turrets slowly revolved in a half circle, swinging from one side of the ship to the other. The Furious leaned slightly as it changed course at speed, but righted herself as a new heading was established.

The enemy to the North was expected but not welcome, and Dawson hoped to bloody their nose. They'd have to breakthrough somehow to get to the rendezvous area, but there was no avoiding conflict with this new force.

The 15 inch guns exploded into action, and began laying broadside after broadside downrange towards the closing vessel.
