Azores (Atlantic Ocean) - 0600 hrs

The smooth surface of the Atlantic spreads out in front of you as the sun rises over the cool waters. The air is incredibly clear, granting exceptional visibility aside from a few patches of morning fog. Over the horizon you know the French Anchorage of the Azores awaits. The fleet has thus far been undetected, but as you close with the isolated Islands, the Axis patrols will certainly be more active. Alongside the force is the Dauphin, a Duquesne class cruiser that has been hastily refitted into a fast cargo ship. Her upper turrets have been stripped, leaving only 4 eight inch guns with which to defend herself, although her decks still have numerous anti-aircraft batteries. The ship is able to turn for 34 knots, and her captain seems to be rather skilled at handling the ship. The bows of all the Kraken vessels cut through the still waters, the fleet traveling under radio silence currently.

The wind whipped past as Mackey stood on the open bridge on the top of the command structure. Oil smoke poured from the two stacks behind Mackey as the Unstoppable pushed forward through the dawn waters. Mackey had walked throughout his new command, trying to get a feel for the ship. The ex-Osprey ship appeared to be in good working order, and he could not complain about the fitting, the ship had some impressive capabilities especially when compared to Mackey's previous command. Still, Mackey felt naked on the vessel. The Unstoppable wouldn't be able to take hits like the Banshee could, and her firepower was several degrees lower. However, she was fast, and the fleet needed speed for this contract, necessitating the acquisition of the light cruiser.

The captain of the Bandai stands at the front of his bridge, gripping the rail tightly. The ache in Toki's wounded leg would not go away, and even seemed to grow worse as the ships neared the mission area. It took an effort of will to take his eyes off the sea and turn to look at the helmsman.

"Make a turn to starboard." Fukushima waves over to the XO, who starts plotting out the new course. "We are setting up a screen. Tell the destroyers to open up some distance between us."

Klepp was standing near the window looking out at the bow of the ship as it shifted in the water, muttering a little "Seems so strange...being on a small ship like this...after the last few on a battleship" He wasn't paying much mind to the bridge crew, other then to give call "Bring us off from the group for patrol duty, Try to keep formation around 30 knots."

Klepp wasn't quite sure how fast the vessel could go, despite having seen it in action, then again he more questioned how they managed to patch it up after how it looked when it arrived in port. He couldn't help but mutter while thinking on what the officers told him about the ship, "Only the Americans would name a class the Pepsicola"

Barnett sternly surveys the horizon from the bridge of his new post, looking for any sign of an italian ship. Seeing nothing, Barnett relaxes enough to briefly look down at The Warg, well taking up more than twice the horizon the Merda, the bridge itself is barely a meter or two higher than the Merda’s bridge. The two large quad guns were stuck in probably the strangest configuration he’d ever seen. Unlike the utilitarian and simple beauty of the pyramid shaped armored citadel of the Fenris or the simple, yet elegant mirror configuration of the Skolopendra or Beowulf, the Warg was the ugly duckling of the Kraken's capital ships, it’s hulking main guns seemingly shoved wherever the designer could to keep the ship’s design stable. Well her shells lacked the sheer penetrating power of the Fenris or even the Doria’s smaller guns, she more then made up for it in sheer number of guns, perfect for decimating the cruisers and destroyers she was expecting to go against. She was built to go up against the navy she was facing now, something she’d not had the chance to do previously.
“ everyone else is breaking off, but we’ll just keep moving forward, We’re the slowest ship in the fleet now after all, gotta take the shortest route possible.” She was built to go against the Regia Marina, and this is the first time she’ll have the opportunity to do so, if we do get into combat today, let's try and make her proud” Barnett says aloud to the rest of the bridge crew, Orphan Timmy, manning the con offering a hearty “aye aye sir!” in response, with the rest of the bridge crew uttering a nonverbal cheerful grunt. The warm smell of bread cooking in the galley below slowly begins to smother the whole bridge, causing Barnett to wonder if the French ship designer purposefully added a vent on the bridge....

Klepp just watched the horizon, giving a soft comment "Keep us ahead at 30 knots, We'll keep formation until something arrives." He just asked rather casually to his second in command "Our destroyers have torpedo's, I don't suppose you have any tactical understanding of their deployment?" "Contact south!"

Mackey whipped around and walked briskly to the side of the bridge, as he lifted his binoculars. In the distance the telltale plume of smoke from a ship underway betrayed the vessel's position.

"Cleared to engage," Mackey said to the crew around him. Immediately there was a burst of activity as orders began being shouted and acknowledged. Within half a minute the main battery was turning towards the oncoming vessel, guns elevating in preparation of the initial salvo.

With a thundercrack the 12 guns on the cruiser fired, almost as one. Mackey kept his focus on the vessel, as another salvo raced out. He hoped the ship's aim was true, the first shells would be landing around the time his 5th salvo was being readied.

"Splashes!" Fukushima reflexively grips the railing at the front of the bridge before the XO clarifies. "The destroyer sighted to the south is under fire."

The captain relaxes visibly. "We can use the gunnery practice. Order a barrage." He picks up his binoculars and trains them to the south. "Tell the squadron they can fire at will."

The lone closing destroyer is caught unprepared as the first volley from the Unstoppable lands 300 yards short of the vessel. The follow on shots close the distance, and the destroyer is straddled and hit with 152mm shells from the cruiser, demolishing the upper decks with explosive shrapnel, and weakening the hull. The Bandai fires into the fray as well, and while the 8 inch guns fail to strike, the secondary battery scores several hits, destoying her watertight compartments and sinking the enemy vessel. Explosions of water from the Lyon's guns pepper the area as well, but do not link up with the sinking vessel.

The advancing destroyers fire on Hawk, but miss. The return fire from Hawk is also ineffective, but her sister ship Eagle scores a hit with her aft battery. The 5 1/2 inch shell strikes the oncoming destroyer amidships, the blast and shrapnel wrecks the torpedo mount located there. Shells from the light cruiser land far short of Eagle, but gradually get closer as the minutes pass.

The submersible's expected location is rocked by explosions as depth charges fall off the racks, but no sign of the ship's destruction comes to the surface. Hydrophone operators confirm as much, as they continue to hear the submarine maneuvering.

The guns on the major combatants all fire, seeking targets, but none of the fire from Kraken finds the smaller ships. Unfortunately the same can not be said for the return fire, as the Merda takes hits from long range as the Capitani Romani cruiser finds the range. The Hawk takes a shell from the middle Soldati destroyer, sending shrapnel across her decks.

The destroyers hadn't taken the sub out of the picture.

With little time to lose, Mackey spoke briskly into the radio, "Beowolf, Warg, Dauphin, immediate course change, port 45, forward maximum, get north of the sub as best you can. Klepp, continue on course for scouting and escort. Bandai, stay south as a scout. Flag will be engaging submersible, then moving to escort Dauphin. Flag out."

He was going to get that ship through, in spite of what it might cost him, but losing the heavy battleline to a sub would be unacceptable.

As the minutes crawl by the tension on the bridge of the Bandai only increases. Toki removes his watch from a pocket of his coat and checks the time, then closes its brass cover sharply.

His XO approaches expectantly. "No sign of the submarine?"

Toki presses his lips together, then turns from the windows to look back at the radiomen. "None. Make us ready to release our depth charges. Perhaps we can pressure him into making a wrong move." Aiden makes his way carefully up the ladderway to the Beowolf's bridge. Having been layed low for the beginning of the mission by the embarrassing combination of an ingrown toenail that had gone septic and a persistant urinary tract infection given to him as a going away present a few nights before the fleet sailed. The rumor that he had since heard was that she had been servicing a stoker from Osprey as well. Hmm. Maybe I'll introduce her to Tortora. He'd sort her out in short order he though. Now that would be entertaining......
Entering the bridge, he paused to straighten his blouse before barking out "Report"! He managed to hide a small smile as the Officer of the Watch jumped about 3 inches off the deck. "Sir, Several destroyers have been sighted to the Northeast and there is a sub the is being prosecuted ahead of us. The Flag has instructed us to make a 45 degree turn to port and increase speed to maximum." the startled officer replied. "Very well" Semmes replied is he walked carefully towards his chair, trying not to limp as he did it.

The light cruiser and destroyers chasing the formation is caught off guard as the battleline swings broadside. The Beowolf scores hits on the lead destroyer with secondary armament at close range, while the modernized 12.6 inch battery hammers at the light cruiser. Rapid fire from the Unstoppable smashes the lead destroyer into a shrapnel holed wreck. The Warg completes her turn and unleashes all 16 main guns at the light cruiser, finishing what the Beowolf started. Shells from both battleships land near the cruiser, with the occasional hit blowing chunks of armor plating away from the vessel. A hit from the Warg cleaves one of the forward turrets off her mount, and another strikes and ignites deck stored ammunition. Six minutes into the bombardment, the ship is a burning wreck sinking quite rapidly.

The Merda takes hits from the oncoming cruiser force, but shrugs the bulk of them off. The return fire is more punishing, with Merda knocking out one of the Cruiser's secondary emplacements with a hit from her 8 inch guns. The Eagle continues to showcase excellent gunnery, bracketing the Maestrale destroyer with her large guns.

The Eclipse and Express continue their sub-hunting, seemingly without luck until a depth charge pattern explosion is followed by a massive secondary detonation, as the submersible's torpedo stores detonate under the assault.

Tortora, scrambling into the bathroom as quickly as his stubby limbs enable him to, tosses the dusty corpses aside, a cautious Timmy approaches the bodies, “papa…?” As timmy gives the body a once over, Barnett looks back to the bridge “Oh shit, hey check it out we actually hit something! Cruiser’s down!” uproarious cheer engulfs the bridge occasionally punctuated by a few quiet awkward sobs.

"Captain, the second group of enemy cruisers are continuing to move south at high speed!"

"Thank you Ensign. It looks like they are making an attempt to cut us off and maybe get some shots into the Dauphin. Open fire at DD1 and CL1."

"Aye Sir!" The Ensign stepped over to the Intercom and relayed the order to Fire Control. Immediately the Bridge again rang as the forward battery and port secondary mounts recoiled.

"Ensign. Didn't I see you talking to a crewman from the Warg before we left port?" Semmes asked. "Captain? Umm, yes sir. A seaman named Timmy. We've become sort of friends during the last port call." The ensign looked a little confused at the Captain asking him a question like that in the middle of a battle. "Good. I have a little mission to give you. The next time you talk to Timmy he is to mention to Captain Tortora there is a Swedish girl named Helga that works at the Chandlery that fancy's him."

The motion of the ships just dead ahead was slightly unsettling, just from klepp's perspective that he wasn't on board a capital ship and was on a vessel at very distinct risk. All the same he quickly gave call "Try to focus fire on target just ahead...And have the destroyers prepare to drop torpedoes on the closer o-" His officer interrupted "Sir, I'd advise against torpedos...a Miss might run afoul Fukushima's group" Klepp just gave a slight nod, leaving it at that.

The range changes rapidly as Merda barrels towards the enemy line, and their turn compounds the problem. The two light cruisers fire on the heavy cruiser, and both score hits. The lead ship drops torpedoes into the water, and one strikes the Merda abeam, causing flooding. The main battery on the lead ship misses, although shots from the secondary battery strike Merda. The second ship is more successful, hitting Merda with both main and secondary armaments. A six inch shell strikes the bow below the waterline, causing additional flooding onboard Merda. Shots from the south, Bandai's secondaries, rain down among the two light cruisers. One of them hits the lead ship, causing minimal damage, but adding to the accumulated damage on the ship so far. Eagle hits the cruiser as well, the heavy shells striking along the forward structure.

The Maestrale fires off a spread of torpedoes at the closing ships. Unstoppable and Dauphin both manage to avoid, but Beowolf sails into one, although the damage is relatively light to the large vessel. Shells land around the Italian destroyer, but it still manages to lay guns on Express, hitting the destroyer with no return fire. Hawk to the north is luckier though, and puts all guns to bear on the Maestrale. Hits pepper the destroyer until she begins to founder, and a final hit sets her depth charge racks on fire.

For brevity, all other shots missed, even though I may not have described them. Tortora, you were out of arc for your secondaries. Fukushima, you would have hit the DD had Hawk not capped it first.

The Heavy pounding on the Merda was a rather a disturbing moment, the damage reports rushing in of flooding and the waterline damage was a painful reminder of just how fragile the Merda was. Klepp just uttered "Jeg har blitt gjort en fisk!" before giving out the orders "Bring us to a third, Get damage control teams on the pumps", He just glared out the bridge towards the hostile cruisers on the water.

Well, it looks like that after we repair this the Beowolf is going to have a complete new bottom....
Sir, Damage Control is reporting in. Flooding is relatively minor and has been contained and the Engineer says we can still maintain speed.
Very well, helm come port 45 degrees and reduce speed to 3/4. We still need to screen the damm Dauphin from these idiots.

The cruisers fire heavily at each other, with shells racing nearly parallel to the water's surface at such close engagement ranges. The destroyer Hawk takes a torpedo destined for the Unstoppable, causing severe damage and the crew begins abandoning ship as the water pours in through the massive rent in her side. The Unstoppable knocks out the torpedo launcher on the second Cadorna as its large volume of fire pours into the cruiser. The Cruisers for their part score hits on the Unstoppable and Eagle, but the damage is minimal. Shots from the Beowolf surround the lead Cadorna, but none strike the ship. Arcing shots from the south do hit though, as the Bandai's veteran gun teams rake the light cruiser with 203mm shells. A hit penetrates through the B turret, and the explosion penetrates down to the magazines. The ship erupts in fire as the ammunition cooks off in an inferno, the expanding flames pushing out through every port and opening on the cruiser. The Merda's guns also rake the trailing cruiser, knocking down structure and turning the upper decks into a wreck. The fire control stations are heavily damaged, and the guns on the ship begin to show markedly worse marksmanship.

To the south of this butchery, the Warg takes a series of light hits from the destroyer trailing it. Torpedo trails race past as well, but none hit the battleship. The return fire is devestating, as a main gun hits coupled with a fusillade of lighter secondary shells obliterate the lighter ship.

The unexpected fireball on display lights up his binoculars. Toki allows himself a slight smile as he straightens and turns around. "Bring us down to slow."

"Bringing us down to slow. Aye sir." The helmsman rings the engine room.

"Why didn't they run?" Fukushima's XO takes a turn at the binoculars, observing the mess to the north. "With this, we've practically broken their blockade by ourselves."

Toki leans over the map table and studies it. "Giri," he replies automatically.

"Duty does not drive these men to face suicidal odds."

The captain takes the critique unflinchingly. "You have another idea?"

His XO looks up from the binoculars. "Nothing I can produce evidence for. It's just a feeling."

The cruisers and escorts had come in piecemeal so far, and had payed dearly for it. He wasn't going to change his own plan however, if the enemy was kind enough to keep making mistakes, Mackey had no intention of interrupting them while they did so.

The forward guns on the Warg line up with the crossing outline of the Cadorna class light cruiser. As they fire, the gunners quickly find the range, and punch several shells through the cruiser, it's light armor no match for the 13.4 inch shells at less then 5000 yards. The deck of the Cadorna is awash with shrapnel, knocking out light AA emplacements. Part of the decking collapses into the engine room, slowing the ship. The hull is riddled with heavy hits and compartments flood, and the ship begins to founder as shells from the rest of the flotilla scream in.

Splashes south of the Bandai's position surprise her crew, and looking to the south, they spot an oncoming group of cruisers.

Toki glances back at his XO. "I want everything we have. Saturate their course with our torpedoes and give them a full broadside."

The guns of the entire squadron spoke at once, an angry roar spitting smoke and fire south. Less noticed was the small splashes of torpedoes that were dropped into the water at the same time, the crews hoping they'd be overlooked in the confusion.

The Bandai lands eight inch shell fire on the Bolzano, damaging her structure, and the guns on the Ronin pepper the Trento but do far less damage. The seas around the two destroyers explode as the Italians concentrate fire from their secondaries on the destroyers, but score no hits on the nimble maneuvering craft. The main guns of the Trento do find the Bandai however, creating large shell impacts in her upperdecks. Torpedoes sail by the Bandai as well, but none hit. The two destroyers salvoes do find targets among the enemy ships, as two hits are recorded on the Bolzano and one on the Trento.

A sound best described as an oncoming freight train is heard over the battle, as heavy shells from the Warg and Beowolf begin descending into the area. The Beowolf lands on target with her second salvo, 12.6 inch shells wreaking havoc on the Trento, with one smashing her aviation hangar and aircraft to pieces, setting the volatile avgas aflame. The other punches through the hull armor and detonates in an engine compartment, slowing the ship by almost a third.
