AESIR FLIGHT

Walking into the hangar was a nice break from the loud and rowdy way that the primarily british (though there were loads of other folk from other, commonwealth countries,) mercs spent their time. Most of the mercenaries on the base were ground troops, and primarily worked off of the base because the Edinburgh way was to use Lynxes to fly everywhere, with the occasional Merlin to lift Land Rovers or Foxes out and about. Walking into the hangar traded one din for another, though, as the sounds of people maintaining aircraft of the fixed and rotary wing variety meant that the briefing was done behind sound dampening sheets of some sort, covered in small baffling that seemed to help kill some of the sound in the room. Hawkey was standing there, today in some fatigues that had started to show wrinkles and bags under her eyes, darker than you'd seen them previously.

"Alright. You're all here, yes? Good, good. Operation Thumper is a pretty straightforward job. You're going to be flying out into the rural, forested area north of Salakas, which is where previous recon flights have been noticing an unusual buildup of people out in the forest, along with heavy machinery, such as dozers, military grade trucks, and small tent cities. Every time the flights have gone over the area the tents have moved and the like, so we aren't clear as to the specific location on the ground. You'll be doing a flyover and attempting to locate specific targets before dropping ordinance to destroy it. The government is politely asking that you minimize damage to the local environment, so no incendiary weapons. There were 5 camps last time that there was a flyover in the area, so any camps you find beyond that will be a bonus to your paycheck."

map

Hawkey points to the map. "You'll be entering the AO from the northeast, and your exfil can be done in any direction north or east. Any questions?"

A feeling of excitement had overtaken Mikhail upon learning that the flight was finally getting some action. Any sort of nervousness was the furthest thing from his mind, instead revenge was the forefront. 100 years later, the Lukomsky family had returned to deliver retribution.

During the briefing Mikhail had jotted down some quick notes. Relatively routine mission, find some Russian camps and exterminate them.

"Is there any AAA in the area?" Mikhail asked.

Max raises his eyebrows. "We're authorized to shoot at anything we don't like? What could possibly go wrong with this plan?" He glances over at the two Thunderchief pilots before continuing. "We don't have IR cameras," the German drawls, "so this is going to be a crapshoot. I don't suppose y'all have a FLIR pod we can borrow?"

Seamus grumbled incoherently at the mention of the conservation of the landscape before scrawling some notes in his notebook. He was excited though, excited to fly and do what he was good at. Even if he wasn't allowed napalm.

"Now y'all are telling us that the governments here have destabilization and a near revolution on their hands and they are worried about conserving forests?" Lance asked with his soft Virginian drawl.

He turned it over in his head and drafted a quick plan.

"All right, so here's what we all can do: Darts on top cover of course, but low enough to assist in searching for the camps. Thuds can be a bit lower and spotting as well, you got all the ordnance for the drops. Mixed dumb and CBU's, some Bullpups if we run into heavier stuff. Gun runs are good to go on soft targets, or for fun."

"Exfil by pairs in the shortest routes out, we'll rally outside of the AO. We're going to assume they have triple-a if not SAM's, so be ready for any of that. Darts be on the lookout for fighters as well.

Now the real question, is do we want a Thud and a Dart teamed up, or stick like-planes together?"

Loadouts

"These loadouts look good to y'all?"

Max nods at the loadout list. "Spotting ahead for the Thuds and keeping an eye out for intercepts is going to be hard enough with just the two of us up top. We should stick together."

"Is there any AAA in the area?" Mikhail asked.

"Unknown. Likely nothing heavier than MANPADS or Zeus Technicals, though. As far as we know they are stocking up for protracted ground engagements, not to try and fight in the air. That is why the government believes they are out in the swamps."

"You are authorised by the Lithuanian Government to use necessary force to dislodge known insurgent activity, that does not mean that you are permitted to break the existing rules of engagement that you became party to upon being hired by Edinburgh International. Civilian kills will get you in trouble with me." Shuffling a piece of paperwork over towards Lance, she continues. "If you want to sign this, you can loan on the pod, but if it is damaged or you lose the plane or the pod, you have to pay the entire price of it."

Loadouts

"Yes, because the Lithuanians would like to continue with their charade that they are not a country that is approaching civil war, so the usage of very specific equipment that happens to be for the purpose of minimising visual damage and hitting targets that are away from civilian centers." She took the paperwork away from the gentleman in return, flicking through it. She frowned a little at the choices. "UXO is a mess, I hope you don't intend to make the footsloggers work through undetonated cluster munitions. They are your coworkers, after all."

If you all could roll airmanship for fuel, please?

Mikhail nodded, scribbling down a few more notes. "Yes don't mind the burnt out vehicles, but god forbid if a journalist sees a patched of blackened trees."

Max nonchalantly hums the first few bars of Ride of the Valkyries as he signs off on the flight plan.

Seamus signed off on the flight plan, and chuckled as Mikhael said his bit. "Gotta conserve the Ozone layer or something"

So Hey, Sorry for being dead for literal months guys. Work's more or less broken my back, and this is the first time in weeks that i've been emotionally equipped to do the level of effort required to crank out all this shit.
SCRATCH THAT LAST BIT. You guys are a ok to start posting, and shit.

The morning of the launch was particularly cold, frost clinging to surfaces and fogging up anything not properly treated. Even when finally in the planes, and finally starting up into the air, it was hard to shake that clinging prickling cold, stuck to extremities as if imposed by the very nature of the region. Quietly, the planes had been allowed to taxi after being loaded up, and the flight was calm and peaceful, brighter up in the sky than it had been on the ground.

There was a soft click of radio as Lithuanian Command & Control requested permissions from the Flight, going silent once there was confirmation. For the moment, it was nothing but the pilots, and a good portion of Lithuanian wilderness ahead of them, with the only idea of where to look being the pre-marked areas on their maps.

Mikhail's hand clenched into a fist before gripping the Thud's centre stick. The mission had been uneventful so far. He had gotten some flight time with the F-105 in the previous days, but the plane was still unfamiliar. The flight had been pushed into activity before they were completely ready, which he did not mind. However a couple of times he had second guessed himself where some of the finer fixtures of this aircraft were. This aircraft had seen some miles.

Carefully he tapped the radar scope, pondering for a moment if the electronics inside had survived for over fifty years.

Quickly eyeing his flight plan, the group had just entered their AO. Show time.

Max felt like he had climbed into a sports car when he fired up the engine of his F-106. The thing looked and felt dangerous, and under full afterburner was even faster than the F-16s he had initially trained on. It may have been over fifty years old but the bird seemed happy to be in the air again. He quickly glances out his cockpit windows to check on his position in the formation before looking down at his radar scope. Reaching over to the side panel, he flips on the radio and cuts into the flight frequency. "We're here."

Seamus didn't feel quite right in the pilots seat of the F-105, he wasn't sure what it was about the old plane. It's combat record in the 'nam. His less than optimal time with it in non combat scenarios or the fact that it was just old. He tried to push these thoughts out of his mind as he scanned the air and his flight in formation. When Max announced their arrival he did a look down, taking in the countryside from the air once again.
