November 30, 2007 07:20 PM Friday Article read 719 time(s) SIEGE By: Alfred P. Dalizon Tess Bedico Trillanes, Lim stand up again vs GMA MUTINEERS led by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and former Army Scout Ranger chief Brigadier General Danilo Lim surrendered past 5 p.m. yesterday to government troops who stormed the Manila Peninsula hotel in Makati where the coup suspects and their sympathizers held out for more than six hours. The surrender came moments after commandos from the Philippine National Police Special Action Force fired teargas into the hotel at the corner of Makati and Ayala Avenues which the mutineers took over in the company of some known opposition personalities and journalists who covered the drama. The hotel siege began shortly after the coup suspects walked out of a hearing on their coup d’etat case at Makati Regional Trial Court earlier before noon. Trillanes and Lim urged the Filipino people to join their call for President Macapagal-Arroyo to step down over corruption issues. National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Geary L. Barias said all of those who were involved in the brief siege including the bishops will be arrested. “We will arrest all the personalities involved in this. Even the bishops will be arrested,” Barias declared. Criminal charges will be filed against them, said PNP chief Director General Avelino I. Razon Jr. Barias said the whole hotel was cordoned off to prevent any of the participants from escaping. “We will be conducting a mopping-up operations and effecting the arrest of those who were involved in this thing,” he said. The surrender came two hours after Barias announced a 3 p.m. deadline for the mutineers to surrender peacefully. Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno announced that a curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. today will be imposed in Metro Manila, and regions 3 and 4. “The curfew is a necessary inconvenience to ensure the return to peace and order is permanent,” he said. President Macapagal-Arroyo commended the military and the police for the peaceful resolutionof the incident. She said new charges will be filed against Trillanes, Lim and the rest of the mutinous soldiers and their supporters. She called for an end to destabilization attempts against her administration. “Ang mali at ligaw na gawain ng iilan ay hindi nangugusap para sa taongbayan o sa hukbo at kapulisan. Gaya ng dati, ipapataw sa kanila ang buong tindi ng katarungan at buong higpit at walang palugit,” the President said. Trillanes said he was ready to face the consequence of their act. “Soldiers, we’re going to face this. Whatever they would want to do with me, I am going to face it,” he said. He said that they decided to surrender to prevent deaths. “We can’t live with our conscience if someone gets killed or hurt in the crossfire,” he said.
