[uncomfortable whimpering]
|
Kiku had had to ask another, surprised-looking girl in the dorms for Kaoru's room. She was pointed to the dorm directory, and looked and found a Kitayama Kaoru in the long scroll of names. And now she was standing outside the room of said Kitayama Kaoru, breathing heavily, the wooden door suddenly an impenetrable barrier. No, no, she could definitely do this. She had already told Momo she could do this! She had to do this. Her hand went up to knock on the door, and she stopped right before making contact. Kiku just stood there, eyes still so puffy and red, arm trembling, inches from just knocking on the door like a normal person could manage. She couldn't do this. That hand flung back down into her purse and whipped out her phone.

Chiharu was working on some schoolwork when she had gotten Kiku's text. Oh, yeah, that's right, she did give her her number. Now she was one of like, 3 people in her contacts. Nice. But now Kiku was asking for advice and Chiharu wasn't super certain how to respond to it. But she still tried.

Kiku started typing out another message, about how she had already tried apologizing, had tried to tell Kaoru her story, but she stopped halfway through, sighing and deleting what she'd typed. Chiharu wanted to help, she really did, but she didn't know much more than Kiku. She typed and sent out a different message:
Kiku slid her phone back in her purse and stared at the door. Her eyes were still a little puffy and red, but Kaoru hopefully wouldn't notice that. Her arm, trembling, rose up to the door. It hesitated for a second, simply hovering, before her knuckles rapped against the wood for the most impolite, quiet knock she could muster. |

No one answered the door. Around thirty seconds after Kiku knocked, the sound of footsteps trudged up the stairs behind Kiku. Kaoru Kitayama appeared at the end of the hall. She was wearing her casual clothing -a jacket, shirt, and a pair of raggy jeans- along with a long black scarf covering up the bottom half of her face. In one arm, she held a bag containing an assortment of books and consumables, while her other hand was jammed into her pocket. Kaoru's eyes widened upon seeing Kiku. She stood and stared for a moment before resetting her expression to its cold average and walking forward. She stopped in front of Kiku, looking down at her and sucking in a breath, as if about to say something, but paused upon seeing the red, puffy eyes. Something imperceptible shifted in Kaoru's expression and she turned her face away, going for the door. With her free hand, she pulled out her key and unlocked the room, opening the door and standing in the entrance. She stopped, turned, and asked begrudgingly, "What do you want? You look like shit." Kiku just stared, completely silent, when Kaoru suddenly showed up and moved to unlock the door. She spoke, and Kiku flinched, like she was expecting to be struck. Another moment's pause, and Kiku looked back to Kaoru, pretty obviously grasping for something to say. "Wh-Where were... um... I mean, what were you, uh... h-how are you?" |

Kiku, being Kiku, opted to gawk like an idiot and then ask a pair of fairly useless questions rather than answer Kaoru's own. Kaoru sighed and gave Kiku an exasperated look, piercing right through her vague attempts at conversation. She pursed her lips, studying Kiku's face again before turning away. It took Kaoru a moment to answer, and when she did, her words were terse. "Shopping," she said. "And normal." Still facing away, Kaoru walked into her room and kept the door open. She turned around and gestured towards the standard-issue sink that every dorm room came with. "Get in here and wash your face before someone sees you," Kaoru whispered, trying very, very hard not to just spit the words out coated in venom. |

Kiku blinked before she stumbled into the room, her head bowed and eyes fixated on the carpet the entire time. God, no, no, this was terrible, what should she do, what should she say? So she walked past the barrier of the door and... stood stock still, neck still craned and looking directly downwards. A moment passed before Kiku tilted her head up slightly, eyes turning upwards to glance at Kaoru... before not saying anything, eyes looking back away, thumbs starting to twiddle. |

As Kaoru stepped inside, she flipped on the lights to her room. It was the standard-issue Taiyoutono dorm room, with a messy cot in the corner, a desk, a closet, and a small sink. Other than the cot, which had Kaoru's school uniform lazily strewn atop it, the room was relatively clean. The open closet was well organized, and the desk was free of stray papers or books. The view from the window was plain, presenting little other than the night sky and the sidewalk. Kaoru hadn't done much in the way of personal decoration. Her leather biking jacket hung prominently on the door of the closet. An ancient, dusty-looking laptop sat on the floor beneath the desk, not plugged in, while a large calender hung high on the wall above, already marked with all sorts of important dates and deadlines. If Kiku looked closely, there was a nondescript, well-worn leather notebook sitting on the floor beneath Kaoru's cot, a pen attached by a string to its spine. Sparing only a brief glance to Kiku's indecision, Kaoru walked over and dropped her shopping bag on her bed. She began organizing its contents, mostly tossing the consumable in the closet and dropping the books on the bed. "You want to say something," she said, not looking up from her task, "so say it. You wouldn't be here, otherwise." Her tone was even, but there was a tenseness to her movements -- an anxiety rumbling in her chest, making her fingers trembles and her shoulders stiffen. |
