Math used to be simple, then the devil said "Let's add the alphabet!"; [Emi's Intro; Open]

Emi seemed to relax a bit at Senjiro's response. She was certainly glad he took this one so well. It probably helped that she wasn't so...blunt about this rejection.

Emi gave a slow nod at the notion of writing stories and poetry. It wasn't something she'd really tried in the past. She wouldn't go as far as to say that she wasn't interested though. She'd try anything once. Well unless it was incredibly stupid. Expressing yourself through an artistic medium didn't count as stupid on her list. Maybe middle school would've gone a little differently if she or Akio did something like that...

Probably not though.

Emi titled her head at Senjiro's sudden correction regarding Haru. "Why them and not he?" This seemed like it was something she needed to know about if she joined. As for the others, she didn't know much about them. Yuki Harada and Yuu Matsuoka. No one that would have a grudge against her it seems. "What do you know about this Harada guy? Is he serious as in 'kind of a dick?' or serious as in 'keeps to himself and doesn't bother anyone?" She'd rather not go in having the wrong assumption. Cheerful is cheerful, nice is nice, but serious can be translated differently depending on the person.

She leaned forward and speared another piece. "Who runs it?" She asked right before taking a bite. Having a quiet place to study, read and relax sounded...pretty alright. There didn't seem to be many members so she wouldn't have to deal with annoying stares from a lot of other people.

That's what kind of killed the library for her. Who knew deafening silence could be so loud?

Well, she sure made a lot of questions. This was very different to how it had gone with him and Matsuoka; Emi was taking this very seriously. Perhaps she had other activities to consider? Was that how you were supposed to go about school clubs?

"Oh. That..." Senjirō was glad the subject of Haru's pronouns had come up; he'd rather save them both the pain of having to sort through that in a bad moment. He scratched his nose, thinking of how to better explain it. "Amachi-kun doesn't feel like a guy or a girl, so everyone calls them... uh, "them". And "they". It's weird, and I don't really understand it yet but uh, it's very important to them. So please do it, okay?" His expression empathized how serious he was being about that: there was no way Haruno could fit in the club if she wasn't willing to follow that rule, or so he thought. Being how they were Haru would probably accept it reluctantly, but it wasn't ideal. Senjirō's smile returned in a beat when the girl asked about Yuki. "Harada-senpai's not a dick. He's cool as shit." The stone-faced third year was the first person Senjirō saw fight the Shadows without magic, and because of that he'd left a very strong impression in his mind. "Doesn't smile much is what I meant, yeah. And uh, he runs a dojo. That all I know."

Her last question made him draw a blank. Who ran the literature club, actually? Yuki was a senior student and seemed a figure of authority, but Haru was the one who went around trying to get members, thinking of new activities, and the person who glued the group together. "...I don't know? Not sure, but I think it's Amachi? Sorry." That would certainly reflect badly on him and the club; Senjirō hoped Emi wouldn't think he was even more pathetic, or a complete idiot.

Emi gave a slow nod as Senjiro explained Haru's pronouns. Seemed simple enough. She didn't care any which way. If Haru didn't see themselves as male or female, who was she to judge otherwise? She's very much an advocate of living your life the way you want after all. "I wouldn't call it weird Chigusa-san. It's pretty simple. They don't feel they are male or female so they don't wish to be identified as either. I wouldn't rack your brain trying to think about it too hard, but calling something weird because you don't understand it can be viewed as insensitive."

For the second time that day, she pointed her chopstick at Senjiro. "About honorifics though. Is Amachi-kun
a slip of the tongue or are they okay with that?"
She was honestly going to stick with Amachi-san, but it was good to know all the same.

"I see." She nodded and finished off her second piece of Takoyaki. Hopefully she wouldn't have any problems with this Yuki Harada. As long as he was the quiet kind of serious they should get along just fine. She raised an eyebrow at Senjiro's confusion regarding the literature club. It's odd to think that the clubs own members don't know who's in charge.

"Nothing to be sorry about. I'll figure it out if I join anyway." She shrugged and finally speared her last piece of takoyaki.

Senjirō felt a little attacked. He used the word "weird" regularly not only in his everyday life but it was all over his preferred media; the words "weird", "strange", held no negative connotations for him. They just meant "different, uncommon", which definitely described a person who wasn't male or female. Insensitive? If Senjirō was insensitive, he would've stuck to calling Haru a "she" after realizing they were a girl's identical twin. But he had respected their wish and was doing a conscious effort to understand; he was simply saying he didn't quite get it yet.

That said, Emi's observation reminded him of back when he was called that very same word in junior high. Back when he cared and it was terrible and cruel, way before Senjirō decided it wouldn't be a bad word anymore. This memory kept him from losing his cool; he felt legitimately bad now. The boy lowered the dumpling back to the paper plate, just noticing he'd stayed in silence and with a severe expression for a very long moment.

It's okay. You can't know everything.

"You're right. Um. Sorry." Well, his appetite was gone now. But he couldn't waste food, specially if someone else had paid for it; so he lifted the dumpling again and gave it a half-hearted bite. He swallowed and put it down again. "It's just that I'd never heard of stuff like that before, so it's kinda confusing... Oh, and I asked them. They're okay with Amachi-kun."
Only then he took notice of the way Emi had talked about Haru's identity, and the fact she hadn't reacted with confusion to his use of a plural pronoun; but had asked why one instead of the other. "It's pretty simple", she'd said; the same words used by Tsukiko. That meant that the concept of... nogender? was nothing new to Haruno; perhaps it was something city folk understood from a very young age?

He took notice of the word "if". So she hadn't made up her mind yet... Senjirō wasn't really a pushy person, so he'd leave it at that for now. "Well um. If you want to visit you know where the clubrooms are, yeah? Or you can ask me I guess, we're in the same class..." The downcast teen played with his last dumpling, turning it around on the plate. He wasn't sure if this meeting was going well or badly.

A look of annoyance crossed Emi's face as she saw Senjiro's reaction. She certainly hadn't been trying to make him feel bad. It was more of a suggestion to be mindful of what he says. For fuck's sake, she wasn't going to let him get all sad about this. She'd tell him there was no need to apologize and apologize for being a bit rude herself.

"Don't get all fucking mopey. I wasn't saying you're insensitive."

Fuck.

She sighed, placed her chopstick down and leaned forward. Whatever, might as well roll with this. "If you give a shit about Amachi-san, then think about how you saying 'it's weird' would effect them. Everyone wants to be understood and accepted...This might be new to you, but they've been dealing with this their whole life."

She took a breath and waited a beat before continuing.

"You seem like a decent guy so I'm just trying to make you aware. Maybe a word like 'weird' might not mean much to you, but it might effect Amachi-san differently." She let her words hang in the air and finally sat back. She'd kind of worked herself up there hadn't she? Well, it's not like she could apologize now, it would take the weight right out of her words.

Emi leaned back, picked up the chopstick and took another bite. She gave Senjiro a few moments to process her words before finally moving on. "Yeah I can check. It seems interesting...I'll think about it."

Emi's sudden exasperation took him by surprise. He knew she wasn't trying to make him feel bad, that had been all his fault for being an inconsiderate piece of shit. Oh no, this was nothing new to him, and yet he was doing it himself.

You're a fuck-up who never thinks before speaking, no wonder nobody wants you. You're gonna make Haru feel like shit someday, and now this school will hate you too.

"Stop." he mumbled, feeling tears swell up in his eyes. No, not there. Not in front of Haruno. If not for the fact that he'd completely tuned out the crowd, he wouldn't have been able to stop it, overwhelmed; but the people around them might as well not be there. He squeezed his eyes shut, now trying to mute the voice of his Persona. Why was he such a prick sometimes? If there were any downsides to having discovered the ruins and awakened, that had to be it. That unpleasant voice had become stronger and harder to ignore.

After a couple of seconds Senjirō opened his eyes again, his expression much calmer. He knew trying to hide his watery eyes would be pointless, so he just looked to the side to avoid Emi's puzzled look. "I know. I'm sorry. I'll try not to say it around them, I promise." His voice was completely deadpan and emotionless. The calming tone of Emi's words wasn't reaching him, it was as if he'd lifted a wall between them that could almost be felt in the air. "I... hope I see you there, Haruno-san."

Oh right; the math problem was still on the table, waiting to be solved. Fuck. He just wanted to stand up and leave.

God DAMN IT!

Emi's hands balled into fists at Senjiro's subsequent actions. No matter what she said it seemed he was taking it the wrong way. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair, trying to figure out just how she could salvage this stupid situation. Maybe it would be better of if she just kept her mouth shut. For fucks sake though, he was tearing up.

"You didn't do anything wrong." She stated before falling into an awkward silence.

What the actual fuck was she supposed to say now? She certainly wasn't going to comfort him and encourage this type of overreaction, but he was also withdrawing into himself here, which probably meant that he felt attacked or something. That was a silly notion, he'd know for certain if she was attacking him, but that was better left unsaid.

"Thanks." She spoke again before dropping her eyes back to her paper. Oh, the problem...shit. Well, they made a deal and it still needed to get done. As awkward as the rest of the encounter might be, she would just have to deal with it. She waited a few seconds before spinning her notebook over once again and pushing it towards Senjiro.

"Okay, so the the hell is up with this problem?" Let's hope this'll distract him and they can just move on.

Well, that had been total disaster. He was fucking done. That's what he got for trying to befriend someone, wasn't it. For trying to do something for someone else, too. Approaching his classmate had been a mistake.

You couldn't have possibly guessed-

Shut the fuck up, Senjirō thought back. He let out a very heavy sigh, lifting his gaze from the floor and directly to his notebook, picking up his pencil. "I... Um, sorry about... Let's just-" A barely audible sniffle, a furtive look to her eyes. "Okay, let's see."

His hand reached for Emi's notebook, and he first compared both of their notes; everything seemed to be the same. Good. He immediately noticed what was most likely to be the problem: prioritizing the basic operations that conformed the equation. Ah, something hard like this would surely help keep those stupid goddamned thoughts at bay.

It would be fine. They would remain classmates, they could not talk ever again, even. She already cared more about reading than he did, so Senjirō could just drop the club if she liked it. Not even visit, if he was to eventually push Haru and thus Yuki away with his carelessness. Alright, time to work his brain.
