"I suppose." It was noncommittal, even if he was almost certain things would revert to the status quo of not interacting with each other in a meaningful way. It didn't really matter, he was saying it to the back of her head anyways.

That left the two of them again, and it was increasingly obvious that anything worthwhile to say was front-loaded into this conversation. "I thought I'd already agreed upon that." There was a clear and palatable disdain in his voice over having to repeat himself.

"If it's my problem, I don't see why you're concerned about it. If I couldn't overtake it on my own, perhaps that would be better than expecting someone to come to the rescue." He stood up and collected his things. "If that's all, I'll be going now. I'll be sure to call you when I go."

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Shizuka bristled at Yuki's response. Of all the damned, bone-headed, macho answers, that...!

"It's not about expecting someone to come to the rescue," she said in a low voice, through gritted teeth. "It's about being able to work with other people for the best outcome we can manage. It's about not letting a bad attitude get between you and what needs to be done. People die when they don't trust each other in this damn city, Yuki-san. And no, you didn't agree to anything. It might have sounded like you did to your own ears, but most sane people would interpret what you said as a dismissal. As you telling me that I'm not important, one way or the other."

Kyo had told her what had happened to Nana's ex-lover. While Yuki's attitude surely wouldn't cause such a dramatic reaction in such dire circumstances, it certainly wouldn't endear him to people who were already half-panicked. On some fundamental level, Shizuka knew that it needed to be confronted, adjusted, before it had a chance to lead to anything bad happening. But she also knew that what she was doing now, directly explaining things, never worked. Never seemed to work on anyone in this town. Shizuka let out a long, calming exhale and closed her eyes, turning back to her meal.

"Never mind. Do what you want." There was just the barest trace of helpless frustration when she threw Yuki's words back at him. It didn't say something as rude as you're not important, but as dismissals went, it wasn't hard to read. It said I wish I could do something, but I can't. I give up.

She picked up a potato wedge and went about disconsolately nibbling the corner of it. Why was it that all the most driven people were also the hardest ones to talk to? If it wasn't Kyo blabbering on a mile a minute and getting in everyone's faces, it was Yuki doing the exact opposite, which somehow, was worse. At least with Kyo, Shizuka at least could expect active teamwork effort. Yuki was going to go off alone and get himself killed one day, and she'd have to cry about it, at this rate.

Damn it. Times like these made it easy to empathize with the people who just stepped back and treated the whole thing like a distant distraction...
