Ugly Crying
Sanae was glad that Bart was able to find a good place to live with the Bransons. While she would have preferred if Bart could live with one of his long-lost half-siblings, she knew that he would have a good home with the family. She still wanted to find at least one of the siblings, so Bart could at least have some sort of relationship with them. Currently, her sights were set on a woman named Priyanka Kohli, an assistant manager at the Tamakawa Jewelry Company store located in Tanjiro.

She was technically off of work today, but it was still something she felt she had to do. She stood outside of the store, dressed in red blouse and blue jeans. Something casual, but proper. It was an upscale establishment after all.

Sanae stepped into the store, and looked around for any sight of the woman. Most of the sellers in the store were too preoccupied with other customers to notice her. Then, her eyes made contact with a perky young women wearing a pink blouse and black pencil skirt. She smiled at Sanae and began walking towards her.

“Welcome to the Tamakawa Jewelry Company. My name is Kai, can I help you with anything today?” She asked.

”Yes, I'm Detective Ichikawa. I need to ask Priyanka Kohli a couple questions regarding a person of interest. Is she in right now?” Sanae replied.

Kai nodded. “Yes, she's in the back. I'll call her up for you, Detective.”

The women then walked off towards the back. Sanae decided to take the opportunity to look around. Her eyes wandered over to a display case and she peered into it. It was full of many beautiful rings, but one caught her. A large green gem with a silver band.

”That's a handcrafted emerald ring with a pure silver band. Pricing starts at 12445 yen, but can be easily negotiated for a lower price.” A voice said behind her.

Sanae turned around to see a dark-skinned woman dressed in a white dress shirt and a pair of black dress pants. Her black curly hair was tied into a bun. ”I'm Priyanka Kohli, the assistant manager. Yukawa-san said you were looking for me?” The woman said.

”Yes, I'm Detective Ichikawa. I just have a few questions about a… uh, person of interest in a previous case.” Sanae replied.

Priyanka raised an eyebrow. ”If it's a previous case that's closed now, why are you still asking questions?”

Sanae chuckled softly. She knew it was going to be a bit strange to ask someone for information on a closed case, but this was something she had to do for Bart. He needed some family.

”While I know it's odd to ask you about this, it's important.“ She explained. ”Do you know a Bartholomew J. Mason?”

The assistant manager shook her head. ”Can't say I do.” She said. Though, Priyanka did note that it was a foreign name.

Sanae nodded. ”What about Aaron and Maribel Sigmund?” She asked.

At the mention of their names, Priyanka's face paled and Sanae noticed rage in the woman's eyes. ”Let's speak in my office. Not out here.” She said cooly.

The detective realized she had hit a nerve and said nothing as she followed Priyanka into the back of the store, and into a small office. It was cute, but it was pretty bare, as if Priyanka didn't have any love for the room itself.

Priyanka sat at her desk, and motioned for Sanae to sit on a chair across from her. She no longer wore the lovely smile, and looked at the detective with a cold expression. ”What the hell are you getting at? Why do you know those names?”

”They were involved in the previous case I mentioned.” Sanae replied. ”How do you know the Sigmunds?”

The woman shifted uncomfortably. It was very obvious that Priyanka had no love for the couple, and from what she saw during the case, she didn't either.

Priyanka cleared her throat, and looked a little ashamed. ”They're my aunt and uncle. Previously my legal guardians.” She replied. Though, Priyanka ended up in living in an apartment away from them, so she couldn't even really consider them guardians.

Sanae fought the urge to smile. She didn't find it amusing, but it did help confirm that she was Bart’s half-sister. It was more of a mood based out of relief than anything. ”I assume that they didn't treat you well. Almost as they resented you because of your father.”

Priyanka went pale again. ”H-How did you know that?”

”Remember that name I mentioned earlier? Bartholomew J. Mason? Well, he went through the same thing recently with your aunt and uncle. He got into an altercation with a relative of the Sigmund family, who assaulted him in front of the home. In self-defense, Bart shoved the relative into oncoming traffic.” Sanae explained. It was a messy ordeal, but it did have a happy ending.

”...Christ.” Priyanka muttered. She was still taking in what Sanae said. She easily made the conclusion that this was her brother. One she had never met, but was aware of. She hoped that the poor kid didn't end up in jail or anything. That would be horrible.

”Don't worry, he didn't die. Severely injured, but Bart didn't get a murder charge slapped onto him. He did go to trail over it, but the judge quickly ruled that he was not guilty. But Aaron Sigmund did mention several other children that came to his doorstep, all sired from your father.” She said. Sanae knew this was a touchy subject, but she had to ask it. ”Have you had any recent contact with your family?”

Priyanka scowled. The Tamakawas are my family. The Sigmunds can go to hell and anyone related to them. They didn't nothing for me, all because I'm some moron’s little bastard?” She snarled. There was a couple of seconds of awkward silence, then the woman sighed. ”I've only spoken to my father once, when I was a little girl. It was right after my mother passed away. Having no other family, he arranged that I go live here in Japan. I wish I would have been placed in the foster care system instead, would have saved me years of pain...”

Sanae nodded. Her heart went out to the woman, having a life like that was something she was not envious of. Sure, her mom was an egotistical bitch who forced her to become a performer, but at least she had a lot of family members who loved her. Priyanka must have felt alone.

”Were you aware of the other children?” She asked.

Priyanka nodded slightly. ”I knew there were others, and when they were staying with the Sigmunds, but I never got to know them. Didn't even know their names. I knew this Mason kid was there, but again, never met him before.”

”Would you like to?”

Priyanka was probably going to have a heart attack sometime during this conversation. Sanae needed to stop surprising her. But that was a little hard. ”What?”

Sanae laughed softly. ”I'm in contact with Bart. He doesn't have any family apart from you and the other siblings running around. He needs someone who understand his situation, and you are one of the few people who do. I know it's a lot to ask, but it could be beneficial for both of you.”

Priyanka thought for a moment, weighing the pros and cons of this proposed meeting. She could easily say no and continue on with her life. She had already made up her mind that she would erase this part of her life from her memory. On the other hand, she might regret not accepting this, and this may be her only chance to meet with a sibling.

”Yes.” She said. ”I will meet him.”

Sanae smiled. She was so happy that all this research and searching finally paid off. And now Bart could meet his sister. How great! ”That's wonderful, Kohli-san! Here, take my card. It has my number on it. You can contact me when the time works for you.”

Priyanka nodded and took the card.

”It's settled then. I'll take to Mason-san, and I'll see of he wants to meet too. Thank you.” Sanae said.

”Have a nice day, Detective Ichikawa.” Priyanka replied, she spun the card around in her hand.

As Sanae left the office and made her way to exit the store, Priyanka leaned back into her chair. She looked at a picture on her desk of when she was a third year in high school. She stood in her uniform while a boy had his around her shoulder. Her heart warmed a bit when she looked at Rikiya. She wondered what he was doing now. Perhaps she should call him, and maybe he'll answer this time...
