"Well, if you need to someone to look over your writing, you can ask me. Really, I wouldn't mind doing it." Natsumi said, clasping her hands together and grinning. "I promise to be as fair, honest and impossible to please as I can. That's how copy editors are supposed to work, right?" She wasn't going to let the opportunity to help another fellow artist come into their own slip by her, damnit! There it is. She followed the waiter's trajectory throughout the shop as he brought the orders to their table. He seemed to hesitate for one moment too long after he'd placed the two elaborate bowls before the both of them - or was that her imagining it? The bow he graced them with was a bit too stiff as well - obviously the both of them showing up here was a bit of a wrench thrown into the gears of his romantic plans. "Here you go... Enjoy!" he said with similar stiffness before heading back behind the counter. Postponing the big battle and biding his time in order to prepare - at least he was willing to be prudent, she had to give that to him. Unluckily for him, the war had been lost, a pointless affair even, before it had even began. "Yeah, she moved away to Tokyo. That was a few months ago." Natsumi replied, testing the texture of the whipped cream with the back of her spoon. "We keep in touch, though! A lot. If you've seen me checking my phone, it was probably Eri texting me. And she's come to visit a few times." |

Oh! As Sayako gingerly stirred her milkshake around to loosen it up before taking her first sip through the straw, she felt a certain amount of relief. So she'd been right only insofar as Eri moving away, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Natsumi had a freer use of technology and the Internet than would have been allowed to Sayako herself, so the simple fact of moving away hadn't really prevented her and her friend from keeping in touch. They both probably missed each other quite a lot, but they could still see each other. And really, maybe it was for the best that this girl Eri was no longer within the city's boundaries where the golden butterfly could get to her... She took her first sip, closing her eyes as it hit her tongue and flowed over it. Oh gosh, that was good. Swallowing, she opened her eyes again. "I might take you up on the offer of looking my writing over, but... not until it's good enough that I am happy with it," she said. "And I'm glad you're at least able to stay connected to your friend. That probably would have been a lot harder to do ten years ago. It kinda makes me appreciate being born when I was, when I think about it." |

Natsumi's cellphone rung in her bag - with the custom ringtone she'd specifically set up for Eri. She smiled, but kept the cellphone where it was. "That's her, right on cue. I think she's a bit of a psychic." She took a generous spoonful of whipped cream topped with almonds and mango sauce - very good, obviously, and a nice way to put her taste buds into just the right mood. She nodded. "That's alright. The world's a scary place, and you want your baby to be big and strong before you throw it out there." she replied with a smile - obviously Sayako was very new at this, so they were in no rush here. "One of the perks of our time, yeah. Anyone from Osaka you've been keeping in touch with? Oh, and if you have a cellphone, it'd be cool to exchange numbers." |

"It's more that I'm so bad a writing things that I can't even read my own work without cringing a little, yet," Sayako admitted with a faint tinge of pink rising to her cheeks. "I know in my head that even the best writers must have been at this level at some point in their lives, but that doesn't stop it from feeling really embarrassing when I go over what I've written and... try to figure out where the holes are." The ringing of Natsumi's mobile phone had thrown Sayako's focus on the conversation off somewhat, though, and as the straw of her milkshake hovered upon her lower lip, she hesitated to take another sip. "You don't need to put off answering that on my account... go ahead and pick up, if you want," she admitted. "I'm right here, so you can talk to me whenever. We can exchange numbers before we leave." She drew in a long gulp from her milkshake. "And no, there's no one I'm keeping in touch with... I only really had some casual acquaintances back home... a few of them were nice enough, but I didn't really know them that well. Really, we only spoke as much as we did because of how small the school was. Everyone knew everyone at least by name and face, or at least, almost everyone did." |

"Oh, I'm sure you're being a little too hard on yourself." Natsumi replied with uncharacteristic cheer, giving Sayako a beaming smile - that only struck him as being the polite thing to do here. As life had taught her, maybe Sayako was as awful as she said she was - the pit of human artistic incompetence truly was bottomless. "Remember, though, you're always your own worst critic." She shook her head. "Nah, it's fine, it's just a text message." she said, taking the cellphone out and checking it. "I'm gonna tell Eri she's on the way to not being my best friend anymore." Natsumi joked, shooting Sayako a short, mirthful glance as her hands grasped it and typed with trained quickness and precision. Damn, no one? Well, if she'd never gotten to know anyone well enough to actually keep in touch afterwards, that did make sense. "Hope you fill that void quickly now that you're here, then. You been doing that, I hope?" she said. |

"Well, maybe I am... but I doubt it," Sayako said good-naturedly, waving the other girl off. "You don't need to get my spirits up about it, or anything. I'm fine knowing that I'm just not very good yet. I can see it making some people self-conscious, but like I said, I've got a lot of time." Sayako couldn't help but watch, somewhat mesmerized, as Natsumi tapped at her mobile phone's touchscreen with a speed and accuracy she couldn't even begin to match. Another thing that she wasn't very good at, Sayako reflected... typing. Even on a physical keyboard it was slow going, but on a phone it took a while to write anything approaching a coherent sentence. She was pretty sure she knew why so many people resorted to "chatspeak" now that she'd spent some time trying to maintain good writing form while typing. But she was determined not to develop those particular habits, herself. The more time she spent writing well, even for casual messaging and things, the better she'd get at doing it when it counted. When Natsumi asked about filling a void, Sayako blinked a few times, her brain catching up with Natsumi in those few seconds of lag. "Oh, uh... well, there's Detective Yamada and you, but for the moment, that's it," she admitted. "I'll confess, I've kind of been avoiding people a little, lately. But I guess I really shouldn't. It's not that I don't get along with people, I'm just not used to feeling like I'm allowed to get close to anyone. And now that I am, I... kind of run my mouth a little too much." She scratched her cheek and looked away. "I always used to hear people talking to each other at school and I envied them a little, just for having people they could talk to about the things that were really on their mind," she said. "But I'm starting to realize that it takes a lot of time to get to that point with anyone. I don't suppose many people who aren't as sheltered as me would have this kind of problem... I imagine almost everyone just has a more natural feel for that kind of thing. Uh, well, except for some of the boys at school who've been trying to talk to me a lot. I get the feeling they really don't." |
