"Yeah, I'm not a fan of broadcasting what I'm listening for everyone in the street to hear. Feels a bit rude to me." And Japanese society at large seemed to agree with her.. The kids blasting their musics as they walked down the streets had always struck her as obnoxious "I try to be eclectic with my music choices, because it's interesting to hear what other people are doing and why they're doing it, uh?" She wasn't going to go on a long-winded dissecation of her artistic process - because while her pride told her that it was interesting to hear, damnit, well, it would still mean taking over the conversation for a good while. She'd wait until she knew that girl a tiny bit better before dumping all that on her. "I'm realizin' now that most of this convo has been me asking you questions." she said, smiling wrily. "Your turn now." |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
Sayako's hand floated up to brush a bit of hair out of the left side of her face, back behind her ear. Ask questions? Sayako had wondered if she should be doing that more or if it would be rude to. If maybe it was Natsumi's privilege to be more inquisitive considering the strange circumstances that had led to this... but then, she didn't really know where the lines were, and when she really thought about them, some of these worries made no real sense. "Okay, then..." she said. "You said you're a bit of a musician. What do you mean by that? Do you practice an instrument or something? Or are you in a club?" Sayako knew that there were a number of things it could mean, even that it could be something like writing original music and publishing it independently. But she wasn't sure how far high school students typically took that kind of hobby prior to the independence that came with adulthood, and the freedom that presented. Sayako certainly couldn't have done anything particularly musical back home. It would have taken too much time, and she would have certainly wanted to practice independently at home. Although, when she thought about it, she probably could have practiced at some traditional Japanese instrument and met with approval from her parents. But the idea was unappealing. Doing anything that her parents particularly approved of had always been unappealing, even before she learned of her clan's darker side. |

Natsumi gave a firm, energetic nod. "Ayup! More specifically, I play the piano. Been playing it since I was... Five, I think. Four, maybe. Besides that, er, I make my own music. Electronic stuff, for the most part. Oh, and I teach it too! To one person. And it's really more of a get-together with a friend at this point. Offer's still open, though." she replied with a coy smile. "I'm kinda big into music, to sum it up. It's almost my raison d'ĂȘtre, you could say." Her being "a bit" of a musician was the century's greatest understatement, but she always downplayed her own achievements when it came to that. She knew it could come across as a bit obnoxious. "You ever tried your hand at something artistic? Not even in a really serious manner. I know I'm more serious about music than most people are." |

"It's almost your... I'm sorry, what?" Sayako asked, tilting her head to the side with an almost adorable look of cluelessness; the foreign phrase had flown right on over her head. Still. Piano, huh? That seemed more interesting than the kind of music her parents probably would have approved of her learning. A piano was also kind of an expensive instrument to get, right? Although Sayako imagined there were probably electric keyboards that served the purpose of learning piano without having to one some monster-behemoth genuine piano. The question about whether she had ever tried her hand at anything artistic was only answered by a bashful smile and a shake of the head. She pointed to the menu, then, and glanced toward the waiter. "I think I'm ready to order now, sorry for making you wait!" she said, raising a hand and raising her voice just enough to carry, though she was obviously too afraid of disturbing anyone to actually shout. When the waiter made his way back over, she told him what flavor of milkshake she wanted and looked back to Natsumi. She smiled bashfully. "So, anyway..." Sayako said slowly. "What do you mean when you say you're more serious about music than others? Are you planning to make a career out of it? It seems like that's the kind of thing someone's parents would be unhappy with... you know, like they'd say you should just go to college and focus on becoming a doctor or prosecutor or, or... or a business manager, or some such. Are your parents the type to push you toward that sort of thing?" |

"My reason for being. The purpose of my life, basically." Natsumi explained with a grin. "I mean, I could probably live without music, like anyone could live without... anything, really. I just can't imagine how." She realized she'd been lightly drumming the Terminator theme on the polished table with her navy blue fingernails, and she stopped herself with an embarassed smirk. If the waiter was trying to hide his interest in her, then he was doing a rather poor job at it - he barely glanced towards Syako as he noted down her order and bowed out. She didn't remember ever seeing the guy before, but that didn't mean he'd never seen her. She focused back on Sayako. "A career? If I'm lucky, yeah! Though it's really not the safest path, is it?" she replied. "Living thanks to your craft's a one-in-a-million thing, y'know? My parents wouldn't stop me from pursuing the path I want, but I ain't crazy. My plan B would be... teaching, I think. I feel like I could enjoy that." Natsumi heavily suspected that most if not all of Sayako's future had already been decided for her a long time ago - it probably didn't stop at her being bethroted to someone she didn't even seem to have much affection for. It was doubtful that it'd even included a job, and even if it had it probably wasn't anything else than a temporary distraction so that she didn't go nuts with boredom. She was suspecting quite a lot, wasn't she? The person concerned was right in front of her. "Got any plans for a future job?" |

"Teaching music, maybe?" Sayako supplied with a smile. "It wouldn't be a bad compromise, and it would give you an excuse to keep your skills sharp and work on new things in the meantime. That's probably what I would do if I was in your position, at least." The girl brushed a finger through her hair, then, and eyed the waiter suspiciously as he walked away. She winced, in embarrassment, and then leaned in to murmur to Natsumi: "I think that's the guy I told you about. I didn't recognize him at first, but... you know. The one from my class who was asking his friend about you." She had to consciously stop herself from looking at the waiter again as she said this, and the look on her face clearly said what she had been too tactful to say aloud: Oh gosh, this is awkward. But she leaned back and attempted to look and sound natural as she immediately answered the question that Natsumi had just asked. "A job, huh..." she said slowly. "Well, I don't know about that. But I was thinking that, if I'm going to be stuck in some arranged marriage, I might take advantage of not having to do the whole 'workforce' thing with my day, and just... spend my time getting good at writing!" Quite suddenly, there was a sunny smile on her face, the look of one who had managed, against all odds, to find a silver lining to her personal cloud that made the cloud itself seem to go away. "I mean, when I think about it, I don't like Tsubasa-san very much... but I am being handed a comfortable life on a platter, so I have opportunities for this kind of thing that others don't. If I didn't, it'd be harder to find the time to work at this sort of thing, just like it would be harder for you to make time for music, right? So, I was thinking I should probably be grateful for that, in a weird way... I mean, I could bemoan my situation and wish on a star for a prince on a shimmering steed to sweep me away, or some sickly-sweet thing like that, but I think that would be a sad way to live." |

Natumi gave a firm nod. She didn't know if it was reassuring or worrying that other people could retrace her mental steps with such ease. "Yeah, that's basically what I had figured out too. Almost feels a little bit too good to be true, doesn't it?" she replied,a bashful grin coming to her lips. "It's what my grandma did. Worked out pretty well for her, as far as I can tell." Her eyes travelled from Sayako to the waiter, then back to Sayako. She couldn't stop one short chuckle from rising up her throat as the reality of the situation suddenly dawned on her, futilely bringing a hand up to her mouth as if it'd have muffled it. "Well, thanks for the info." she said after a deep breath, clearing her throat. This made things... both easier and harder, in its own way. Yes, band-aid theory and yadda yadda yadda, but this dude didn't deserve to be embarassed at his own work. She could think about this all a bit later, though - she was quite involved in that little conversation Sayako and her were having. "Writing, uh?" She could understand Sayako's reasoning, yes - not the kind of life she would want for herself, but if Sayako wanted the pieces to fall that way in hers, more power to her. Chalk that up to her stubborness. Surrendering simply wasn't something she was hard-wired to do, and this'd feel like a surrender. "What kinda stuff do you like writing?" |

"Well, I've only done a little bit and I'm terrible at it, so I can't say I know what I like writing yet," Sayako admitted with a slight blush. "I've only had a couple of weeks to experiment with that, you know... but I like reading fantasy stories, above all. So I'll probably start by trying to write that kind of thing, and see what other ideas come to me as I read more varied kinds of books." Sayako was under no illusions that she would be able to write anything worth showing to anyone else for years, yet. She was getting the sense, from what writing she had done, that a lot of it came down to just practicing and practicing until one found their stride and style, and then practicing even more to refine whatever came of that. Many people who tried to write had been at it from a younger age than she had started, so she'd have to work doubly hard to make up for that. She leaned in, then. "So, your grandma taught music? At a school, or as a tutor?" |

Having already decided that she wanted to dedicate her life to writing when she had so little experience with it struck Natsumi as a bit too optimistic, but... who was she to judge, really? She was no stranger to ideas just striking her and not letting her go until she'd done something with them. "Yeah, it's good to start with what inspires you. Nothing wrong with imitating the things you like." she replied. "I do some writing myself, y'know? It's really just short album reviews for the school newspaper, but I enjoy it." From what she could see from her seat, their orders were just about done and only the finishing touches remained. Best case scenario, the waiter would broach the subject first and she'd be able to let him down both quickly and gently. "She did both, actually. She taught at a fancy school in Nagoya for a long while, before my grandpa and her moved here... She couldn't stomach the Nagashima students for whatever reason, so she quit that and went private. I got lessons for free after hours. My best friend was one of the kids she was tutoring, actually, and that's how I met her. Grandma could never get the lessons to stick, not with Eri." Natsumi offered, her voice tinted by a bittersweet hint of nostalgia. "She was a stern teacher like you wouldn't believe, grandma. In a way, I'm glad she was." |

"Well, I also don't really know I'll want to stick with it," Sayako admitted. "It's just a thought. I have time to experiment, after all... and I really love books." The specifics of Grandma Aizawa's music-teaching career (or was this the grandmother on the other side of the family?) brought a faint smile to Sayako's face, but she noticed something in Natsumi's tone at the mention of her best friend Eri. Tilting her head to one side, she hovered on indecision for a moment, before ultimately deciding to ask: "Your best friend... did she move away, or something?" she asked, deciding to err on the more optimistic side of things that could have happened to prompt that little hint of unhappiness she had detected. If Natsumi was willing to talk about her friend to an acquaintance she'd just met, it couldn't be that bad, after all. It wasn't as if she'd been kidnapped or killed, after all, although the way things were in this city, it was less unlikely for either of those things to have happened than Sayako was comfortable with. |
