Amongst the various eating establishments that comprised Tanjiro's food court, Jack Frost's was on the quainter side: sandwiched between a large pizzeria (Natsumi'd eaten there once, and the fact that she couldn't precisely recall what she'd thought of it most likely meant it was wildly mediocre) and a noodle joint, it seemed almost timid by comparison. There to catch the passer-by's eye was a cardboard cut-out of the ice cream shop's mascot, a cute little snowman fellow inviting ice cream lovers inside, and holding a cone filled with quantities of ice cream the laws of gravity had decided were impossible in the real world. The inside of the shop went for an amusing if slightly strange combination of cute and cozy, trying to pull off the look of a traditional gelateria while still including its mascot in the decoration. The flavors were manifold indeed, and the toppings likewise: a little more than half of Jack Frost's tables were currently occupied, mostly by uniforems-clad student who'd had the exact same idea as the two of them. She turned towards Sayako. They had talked a bit as they'd made their way here - not a very long walk by any stretch of the imagination -, as people walking together to the same place did. Their chatter had remained casual, the sort of thing one could expect from new acquaintances. She still had questions to ask her - important questions, but they could wait until they'd sat down. Or maybe a later time. "You know, that shop looked a lot different not six months ago. They can't seem to settle on a single theme." she remarked offhandedly, leaning in towards the menu. Deciding in the spur of the moment had always been more of her thing. |

As they walked, Sayako seemed torn between wanting to take an active hand in conversation and not knowing whether she was any good at it. Intermittently, she would bring up a topic only to fade back and listen to whatever Natsumi had to say or whatever subject she happened to turn things to from there. It was no different as they approached Jack Frost's; she had remarked that one of her grade school classmates had loved that particular mascot, to the point of dangling a small plush charm of it from her schoolbag, but had not gone any further in talking about this friend. But it wasn't as if Sayako was quiet. She was an active listener if nothing else. The mention that the shop's look had changed within the last half-year prompted her to perk up and lok around as they neared the entrance. "Really? What did it look like before?" she asked. "I kind of like it, but I don't go to very many restaurants or ice cream shops. Er... Inaba only had a few eateries and I know there's an ice cream shop, but I never got around to checking it out." She stopped talking as her eyes swept the menu, and blinked a few times. It took a whole thirty seconds before she managed to make sense of enough of the items to put a hand to her mouth and ask: "Wow. Are there really that many different things to try? I could come here every day for a month and still not have tried everything..." |

Natsumi's brow furrowed as she searched for the terms that'd best describe how exactly the ice cream shop had looked like six months before. "It was like... gaudy's probably the best way to describe it. Imagine all these tables all blue and white with fake stalactites on the edge, the floor all looking like cracked ice, blue lighting everywhere too and the mascot leering over your shoulder. Like you were in a spaceship or something. I mean, in its own way, it was pretty impressive." she said, smirking lightly. "But the electricity bill was blowing up and people didn't enjoy it, really. Oh, and they had posters for the latest movie releases too! Except they always forgot to change them." It'd be probably a bit difficult to imagine, now that the shop's atmosphere had become a lot milder - and a lot more welcoming as well. "Hell yes, there are. I haven't tested everything yet, but the fundamentals are on point." An ice cream shop without good strawberry and vanilla was barely worth thinking about. Natsumi stepped in and made a beeline for a table near the back, free of neighbours on either side. She let Sayako have the seat and sat on the chair. "So... How long's it been since you arrived in town? What kinda stuff have you had time to see?" she asked, cracking open one of the menus held by a smaller version of the shop's mascot placed at the center of the table. Natsumi outstretched a finger towards the adorable little figurine. "They had to glue them to the table." she added. "Way too many clients going back home with them." Sayako's eyes went to the wall, and she blinked at them in surprise. "Movie posters? ...Do ice cream shops often do that?" she asked. "I don't mean I wouldn't have liked it. I've been watching a lot of movies and it would be cool to be introduced to new ones that way. But it's not something I would have thought you'd see in a place like this." The electicity bill, on the other hand, just seemed like reckless, unnecessary flair. As Sayako briefly hovered a bit nearer the wall, trying to imagine the kinds of posters that had hung there before, she looked around and tried to imagine the blue lighting going alongside it, frowning to herself. After a second, she nodded and said: "I think I read something about blue light making it harder to relax. I can see why people wouldn't like it in an ice cream shop." She turned back to Natsumi, and followed her across the shop. She was secretly glad that her new friend had selected a table further back, less visible. She didn't think anyone from her family would have been monitoring her now, but she felt better about their table placement making it harder for them to do so... and easier for Sayako herself to notice, if they were. She slid into place, looking around curiously... until her attention snapped back when Natsumi pointed out the Jack Frost figurine. She put a hand to her mouth and giggled. "No one would try something like that out in the country! Everyone recognizes everyone, so they'd know whose door to bang on to get the figure back, probably," Sayako said wistfully, leaning back. "And well, I've only been here since around the start of the school year. The move was planned before then, of course, but it's better to work around the major grading periods. I think my father rented the apartment a month or two in advance for me, just to be sure I could slip right in without any trouble." She tilted her head back, putting a finger to her chin. What had she had time to see? She shivered a bit at the question, although this wouldn't look odd, since the ice cream shop was pretty well air-conditioned. Her mind went right to that day at the park, and following that woman to the hide-out of that secret society. She swatted the idea aside and focused on some of the more pleasant things. "I've taken a hike or two in the woods, although the environment around here is a bit blander than the mountains around Inaba..." she said. "I've explored the shopping center a fair bit, and I did take a look around Matechi Street, too... I've been told there's a lot to be found there. But for the most part I've stayed at home and just caught up on movies." She chuckled into her hand and reached for one of the menus. "I bought myself a video game system and haven't played a single game on it yet... but just having it feels liberating. Better value than just any old Blu-Ray player, too, I think. But there are so many movies that I haven't had a chance to see that I think I'd get a bit overwhelmed if I tried playing the games that caught my interest. According to the Internet, they're all quite long." |

Natsumi shook her head. "Nah, I don't think so. I think it's really more of a fast food thing. Especially since they tend to have movie ticket deals and such." she replied. The space formerly allocated to movie posters was now occupied by posters showcasing some of the menu's wildest and most colourful items in all their mouth-watering glory. Definitely an aesthetic upgrade, that one. The start of the school year, uh? So she was indeed fairly new to the city. Not so new that she couldn't have an idea of where things generally were in the city, but she probably didn't know all the nooks and crannies. Well, to be fair, neither did she, and she'd been here since her birth. "You ain't gonna persuade me the country's better. Just not gonna happen." she replied with a snicker. Natsumi put her menu down and folded her hands on top of the table, fingers intertwined in a pyramid of long, delicate digits. "You're living there on your own?" she asked after Sayako mentioned her father renting out an appartment for her. Seemed pretty cool at first glance, though loneliness could definitely become an issue when living in another city. Catching up on movies. Yes. Of course. It made a lot of sense - what would she have done, if she had lived in a bubble where movies simply weren't a thing for a decade and a half? Catch up on everything she'd missed. She smiled wrily. "You're making me feel a bit jealous, you know? You get to watch all these amazing flicks for the first time, just ready to have them all fresh in your memory." she said. "Found any you really like? I'm pretty fond of the American classics, myself." |

"Oh, it's not better," Sayako said, cheerfully enough. "But everything is smaller, closer-together... so everything you pass by feels more important, in a way. I don't know what half of these building even have inside them, you know? And even school is full of so many strangers that I can't keep track of most of them long enough for them to graduate from being strangers." As Sayako went through the menu, she decided to take Natsumi's earlier verdict to heart: that the fundamentals were safe bets. Something simple then. Hm... plain chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry seemed a little boring, she could have that just fine from a grocery store... "On my own?" she asked distractedly as she registered a question. "Oh, yes, Father didn't want me in the dorms. I didn't ask why. Living alone seemed too good to be true, so I just went along... no, I think I'll get something more exciting than that after all..." ...If she was going to be having ice cream at the mall, she needed to at least graduate to the second tier of ice cream complexity. Something like rocky road, or cookies-and-cream. Also safe bets, but with enough to them that it was worth leaving your home for. Maybe a milkshake? A milkshake sounded divine, actually. Yes, she would look at the milkshake flavors first... She looked up as Natsumi asked about movies. "My first movies were the Lord of the Rings, but that answer feels like cheating. I was already in love with the books," Sayako said thoughtfully. "I was surprised by how much more adrenaline-pumping it could get, sometimes. The books don't really have much focus on fighting, but there they are in the movie, jumping right into hoards of orcs and surfing down monster-elephant trunks. The music is wonderful, although Frodo-kun doesn't seem as heroic in the movies, somehow. Hm. Counting those out, though..." She tilted her head to the side. "Detective Yamada and I watched Westworld together," she said. "I wasn't sure how to feel about it, at first. I've, um, I've been most interested in fantasy adventure stories so a lot of what I've watched has been from that. But this was a different kind of movie, and I think I like it. I'd like to see some other things. Maki-san left me some other movies, too. Oh, but it's not like I've only watched sword-and-sorcery things." (Sayako's cheeks tinged a bit pink at this point.) "I've been looking into some horror films, like Alien, which I'd heard good things about... it was interesting! And Terminator, although that didn't feel so much like a horror movie, somehow. Maybe I just think of killer robots as being more of an action-movie thing. It was good! But if John Connor only existed because his father traveled back in time from the future, and his father only did that because John Connor sent him back... I don't get it!" She threw her hands up into the air in her confusion. "What made Kyle Reese go back in time the very first time, the time before there was a John Connor to begin with? Maybe they answer that question in the other movies? Oh, but I keep hearing that only the first one and the second ones are any good..." At this point Sayako trailed off, looking a little embarrassed. She seemed to have to caught onto the fact that she was working herself up into a ramble. She picked up her menu again and busied herself with that milkshake menu. Almost immediately, one caught her eye. Banana-caramel? That seemed like a nice combination... |

"Hmmm." Yeah, she seemed not to have any big problems with living on her own in Nagashima. After a life spent in the oppressive cocoon of her family, of course Sayako'd jumped on the first occasion to flee and have a space to call her own. It seemed only natural. She was tempted to interject with some thoughts of her own as Sayako rambled on about the things she'd seen and what she thought of them, but she decided to let her have it. It was pretty amusing, in its own way. A slight smile drew itself on her lips. "They don't." she said, chuckling lightly and shaking her head. "If you think the first one doesn't make sense, I don't recommend checking out the rest, then. You know, at least the first two are both nice, open-and-closed stories. Don't really make sense when you think deeply about them, but hey, it's time travel, of course it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. The ones that come after, they try to be clever with it, but the result is really abject failure." she added, tapping on the table with her finger in a repetitive, distinctive rythm. "Great music too! It's influenced me a lot. Pure 80's goodness from front to back." Terminator was... Yeah, it was probably one of her favorite movies, the music being a big factor. But since she'd brought up Alien - that series Natsumi also had a lot of affection for -, she continued with that. "I recommend you check out the rest of the Alien series, though. They're all interesting in their own way, even if every one of them is really a remake of the first film." A waiter - another high school student, most likely, and visibly both proud and nervous of taking the order of two ladies as comely as the two sitting at that table - came to take their orders. Natsumi settled for raspberry, passion fruit and vanilla, with some added whipped cream, toasted nuts and mango sauce on top - decadent and exotic, but not too much. She let her eyes linger on the waiter in bemusement before going back to Sayako. "You got good taste, though! Have ya had the time to... Shop around a bit? For clothes, cosmetics, that sorta thing? I can't imagine they gave you a lot of pocket money for that back home." |

Sayako tilted her head to one side. "I don't know... the time travel in the third Harry Potter book seems to make sense for the most part... I can even think of a pretty simple answer for who saved Harry before he saved himself. But that's a really small situation. Something spanning such a large period of time and on such a large scale would mean more variables, wouldn't it? Smaller changes would make things fall apart more easily. There's a big difference between what can happen between a handful of people in an afternoon and what would go down across an entire planet over a series of decades..." The girl tapped her finger and her chin, frowning a little bit. "...It feels like a time-loop only works when the situation is so simple that things would have played out so similarly without the time-travel that the changes wouldn't be... intrusive. But so much of The Terminator seems to rely on the time travel always having happened. I get that they wanted there to be a touching, romantic plot twist right at the end, but the movie feels like it would have worked better without it." The waiter arrived at around this point, just as Sayako was opening her mouth to respond about Alien. She looked at the boy, blinking a little bit. It was a bit amusing to see him so obviously happy for the chance to interact with two young women (it was also a relief that he wasn't being pushy about it... boys in the country had a way of doing that, just because there weren't as many girls to go around), but the world's silent reminder that casual flirting and dating was to be forever off-limits to Sayako did not do very much for her mood, and she fell silent, forgetting to answer Natsumi's recommendation about the Alien series. Clothes and cosmetics, though? Sayako smiled a little at that. "Well, clothes and make-up were never a problem," she admitted. "We do have to look normal, you know. But I did do some shopping for clothes. It never seemed smart to stand out too much while I was at home with my family... now that I'm hear, though, I'm experimenting a little bit. I can't say I've seen much reason to do much with cosmetics that I wasn't doing already." A pause. The smile faltered. "I should really avoid drawing too much attention from the boys at school, though. I'll only end up having to hurt their feelings. That's why I don't put much on when I go to school." It didn't seem to hurt her appearance much at all, of course. Her hair was straight and well-cared-for, and her school uniform was so well-fit that it looked tailored. Her look was well above the average mark, she just lacked any outward indication that she might welcome the attentions of the opposite sex. No one had asked her out on any dates yet, although Sayako suspected this might have been because she kept a mostly-low profile around school and rumors of her engagement were already floating around. |

She... didn't remember the Harry Potter books or movies all that well, aside from having a general idea of the plot and who was alive or dead at the end of them. She'd enjoyed them, for sure. But she'd never had the compulsion to go back and go over them once again. "Hmmm. Well, it's all just a tool to tell a certain story anyways. Of course John Connor needs to exist, because he's J.C and the savior of humanity and all that, and of course he needs not to have known his father, because otherwise the allegory doesn't work as well." She grinned - the grin was warmer than the one she'd had on before. "Well, you look pretty good already, so I'd figure you wouldn't need too much." Not wanting to have to disappoint boys was a nice thought, though not one Natsumi would have ever considered. Not that she liked crusing the hopes of anyone else, but she was taken, and it was up to prospective pick-up artists to inquire upon that fact before they made their move. She glanced idly behind the counter, and caught a look from the waiter. He averted his eyes. "I like looking the best I can, honestly. For Shane, of course, but also 'cause... Might seem a bit weird, but I feel like I'm being slovenly if I don't. I ain't gonna pretend I didn't get a good roll of the dice when it came to looks, but it feels like a bit of a surrender if I don't do at least a bit of work on myself." she explained. "Anyways... Had the time to listen to some new music? I'm a bit of a musician, myself." |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

Whatever was significant about John Connor's initials or not knowing his father, the look on Sayako's face made it quite obvious that it had flown over her head. The subject of looking pretty seemed to be easier to follow than pop culture references to Western religious icons, though. The idea that Natsumi was keeping herself looking nice for her boyfriend brought a slightly melancholy smile to the girl's face. She thought that was cute, and whoever it was that this girl had chosen to give her affections to was very lucky indeed... but it was not a feeling that Sayako herself could relate with. Not only was she ninety-percent sure that Tsubasa wouldn't have properly appreciated the effect, but she had still not confirmed for herself that he was attracted to women in the first place, let alone whether or not he wanted any more to do with her than she wanted to do with him. Their time together so far had been obligatory. She had only even gone to the mall with him the other day because, by his own admission, his father had insisted they get to know each other. That was the only admirable trait Sayako could think of when she considered the swordsmith's son: putting things off was just not something Tsubasa was inclined to do, no matter how disinterested in a thing he was. The question of music banished this vestige of beneath-the-surface unhappiness in favor of a more clueless kind of enthusiasm. "Well, no, actually," she admitted. "I've got a bit of music on my phone, but I haven't bought any more since I got here. It might sound strange, but I'm a little afraid to listen to music where anyone can hear it and I can use my headphones, but then I get nervous about not being able to hear what's going on around me... I keep thinking my sister's going to knock on my door and then remembering she isn't here any more. Does that make sense? It'll probably be a while until I can shake that feeling off. But I am interested, I just like the quieter music. You know, like... slower songs, or a tranquil instrumental. Something I can see myself listening to when I take a walk outside." |
