A weighty silence took over the table after Yayoi's closing comment, more weight settled in Sho's chest when he realized that he basically ignored Yayoi, but it was hard to concentrate on her when Sio also seemed down. It was getting even harder to even acknowledge either of their existences as he worked, getting pulled in deeper and deeper into his work by the incessant voice of Tanjiro-kun and his high expectations for him.

The clack of the cup being set in front of Sho brought him partially out of his dream like focus, the waitress had brought them their drinks it seemed. Sho set aside the two parts he was currently pinching between his thumb and forefinger, the indentations of the parts marking his skin were visible as he reached for his glass and slipped quietly from it. The jingle of the ice in glass gave a pleasant ringing noise to accompany their silence for the moment.

Glancing over at Yayoi's drink, Sho's eyes widened at the cat of foam in the coffee mug. It was too cute! He wasn't a coffee drinker, in fact he'd never touched the stuff before, but he might be tempted to if designs like that accompanied every cup. It was a little sad to see a design that had some time and care devoted to it be utterly annihilated so easily, but Yayoi didn't order coffee to stare at it. But the cat in the mug also reminded Sho of his own cat and how he wished she were here right now, she might be able to relieve some of the silent tension with her nasally meows. Sho could hear Tanjiro growl at him for getting distracted, mouthing another apology.

Sighing at the thought of his feline companion, Sho continued his work, hardly sparing a glace at the others as the silence continued. Tanjiro went from ten to 3 parts which were set out on the cloth to dry and set. Examining them revealed that the warping on some of the parts left noticeable gaps to see Tanjiro's innards, or lack there of for the hollow figurine. That and the glue was not working quite as fast as Sho wanted, leaving him to wait for a moment with nothing to do but bare the increasingly awkward silence.

Drinking her juice, Sio watched her other companions. It felt like she had no common ground with her, and in a way, she kind of regretted suggesting coming into this place. But, she wanted to be more of a people person, but she was unsure what to say.

Not knowing what to say, she looked at Yayoi while Sho was busy fixing the toy. She saw her drinking her coffee. Having nothing better to ask, she spoke to her, "That coffee... was it good?"

Perhaps she should've just ordered a coffee before, but... oh well, the juice was good too.

This wasn't real good was it?

'That coffee…was it good?”

Oh, no she didn't mean the coffee. That was just fantastic. Just the general situation. She returned the odd, pretty girl's question with a friendly smile. ”It's really good, actually! Would you like to try a sip?” She held out the mug so that Sio was free to take her up on that offer if she so chose to do so. That was just something she did with Sanae-chan so much, she didn't think twice about it. But that could be a bit weird with people you just met. Even if there was no reason not to try to be friends with them.

What wasn't good was that the conversation felt strangled before it had a chance to go anywhere. It sure wasn't Sio's intention for the three of them to sit there and stew in awkward silence until the food arrived and she felt more than a bit bad that she had contributed somewhat to that situation.

So, that also meant it was just on her to try and fix it, right? No big! ”I didn't even realize it was cat appreciation day, or nothing. I think I always wanted a cat or a dog as a pet, but we couldn't have them on the lease. My grandpa had this big dog at his place and he was a real sweetie.” Yeah, that wasn't too bad a place to resume the talk. Everyone liked animals, right? And at the least, those that didn't like them seldom outright hated them. Even still, there was probably a specific story as to why they had a problem even if they did. There was something to talk about no matter what.

Sipping from his water again, Sho gingerly examined the parts again. Nope, still not completely set, that or it was but it wasn't holding as well as his usual glue. Sho would give it another minute or two before attempting anything else. The awkward tension still continued to build in the silence, Sho couldn't think of anything he could say so he didn't say anything at all.

The silence was lifted as Sio and Yayoi talked about the coffee. Yayoi even offering a sip to Sio from her own mug. Sho was grateful for the brief distraction from his own thoughts as he watched Sio and Yayoi.

Yayoi spoke again, this time about pets. The subject has shifted and the silence has broken. Sho felt grateful to Yayoi for giving him an opportunity to speak, though he didn't want to spoil it by blabbering on and on about his cat, that'd probably make him seem like even more of a weirdo than they already thought he was. That and he had to appeal to the broken Tanjiro as well, so he'd have to word himself carefully "Aww, you like pets too, Kawai-san? I have a cat myself but I think dogs would be nice too, though the thought of big ones kinda make me nervous heh...heh."

Sio blinked when Yayoi offered her the coffee. Despite being unsure, she accepted the mug gratefully before she stared at the black liquid inside it. Then, she gave it a tentative sip. "Mm... it's good..." she said.

And then, they started talking about pets. She didn't have one, considering that she lived alone, and she wasn't all that good at keeping pets. Still, she remembered the goldfish that her uncle had. When both Yayoi and Sho started talking about cats and dogs, Sio decided to tell them about goldfish.

"Don't have pets at home, but my uncle has goldfish..." Sio said, smiling a little upon recalling how cute the goldfish was. "Does that count?" She asked, thinking that a goldfish might not count if compared to other pets like cats or dogs.

She brightened up considerably when it seemed that they had something to talk about. She beamed as Sio agreed the coffee was good. ”I know right? I think I'll definitely be coming back for it! I'll be sure to bring along Sacchan.” She explained, as she realized none of them probably knew Sanae. ”She's my best friend, y'see.”

That was a little bit of a tangent, but she was doubtful more would have come of that. ”Of course it counts, Murakami-san! Goldfish are kinda cute, but they're harder to take care of than people expect. Fish tanks can get really complex.” She wasn't about to exclude her out of the discussion for something so trivial. No one said you had to actually have a pet yourself to like them. As she saw it, that put her in about the same position as Yayoi in the first place.

Big dogs made Sho nervous? She understood why some people felt that way. Her only experience with it was pretty subjective, after all. ”Hmm, I guess that depends on your experience with them. There's not a lot of room for those sorts of breeds to really roam in the cities anyways, so they're a bit rare. Cats can do better in apartments, generally. And speaking of…What kind of cat is he? Or she? What's their name?” She was more than happy to go into detail, and listen to those he wanted to share. It was a great way to get to know people, as well as pass the time while they waited for their food to be ready or the glue to dry.

Well, this is an improvement. Sho was immediately feeling the relief from the girls talking again, Sio even smiled which could only mean good things, he hoped. Sho rested his clasped hands on the table before him, listening with interest to both Yayoi and Sio as they discussed the coffee and fish and their tanks. Sho didn't know much at all about fish, so he simply listened.

So Sio didn't have any pets, but a goldfish her uncle owned came to mind. Sho couldn't help but think of how strange it was that they all had or by extension of their families, had pets that opposed one another. Dogs chase cats, cats eat fish, and fish...scare dogs? Sho was a little fuzzy on the last one, but he never knew dogs and fish to get along, though is experience with either was limited. An image of Yayoi's grandpa's big dog chasing B.B who in turn chased Sio's Uncle's goldfish flashed in Sho's mind, causing him to make a noise halfway between a chuckle and a gasp of worry. Sho was thankful B.B was an indoor cat and even more thankful for Yayoi easing his fears that big dogs would be pretty rare in the city.

It wasn't a complete surprise that Yayoi would ask about B.B, but Sho took a second to consider how to answer all the same. Sho shot a quick glance at Tanjiro who was simply glaring at Sho, then turned his attention back to Yayoi. "Her name is B.B...it uhh, stands for brown belly, I don't even know why I used english...guess it sounded cooler?" Sho's cheeks turned a little pink, getting embarrassed about how it may have been a dumb name for a cat since it was so simple, "She's a Siamese that's almost completely black, except for her belly, obviously. She, uh, isn't exactly a sweetie but is good company even if she's a bit nosy or moody." Sho reminded himself again to pick something up for her, B.B would probably know it was cat appreciation day somehow and there'd be hell to pay if he didn't do some appreciating.

Sio listened to both Yayoi and Sho talking about cats and dogs. She didn't know how it's like to have cats or dogs with her in her apartment. She believed that she might not be able to take care of them due to her barely able to take care of herself.

Still, that didn't stop making Sio wish to have at least a cat or a dog. The smaller one, the better.

"Wish I have a cat... or a dog..." Sio said, her eyes seemed wistful. "But can't take care of pets on my own," she shrugged as she pointed a finger at herself. "Can barely take care of myself," she said. She had been living alone for a while, and despite her uncle being her legal guardian, he wasn't the most attentive guardian, and while he did take care of her by giving her essential things, he basically allowed her to do whatever she wanted without supervision.

As a result, Sio had been living quite a minimalist life.

"Still... pets sound good..." she said, smiling a little. She didn't know whether she was talking about the same thing with the others or not.

She nodded along as he spoke and had a mirthful smile as Sho described the cat that he had. ”Yeah, kinda sounds like a cat.” Some people were cat or dog people, Yayoi was something of both. If it didn't sting her, bite her or have too many legs then it was something she had no problems at all getting along with.

She glanced over to Sio. The girl was kind of left out talking so much about furry friends. She didn't know about the girl's living conditions but it sounded like it was a bit frustrating to her. ”Well, that's no big deal either. We're still in high school after all. There's plenty of time to still learn that!”

Come to think of it, there wasn't a ton that three disparate strangers could talk about that included everyone unless you touched off a common interest in all three, or a universal topic. The weather was a little bland, and there was…food! Just thinking about it was enough to prompt Yayoi to glance up and see if their meals were ready yet. ”You think it'll be time to eat soon?”

Sho was glad to have talked about B.B, one of the only companions he had in Nagashima who at least somewhat appreciated his company. That seemed to be changing as the conversation continued with Sio and Yayoi paying close attention to what Sho's words.

Sho listened to Sio as she spoke, turning to her as she finished. He was caught off guard by her statement that she couldn't take care of pets on her own, or even take care of herself. Sho certainly didn't know Sio all that well, or at all really, but she seemed to be a lot better off in Sho's eyes. Sho didn't want to say anything to upset her or cause another crushing silence but he felt like he needed to say something.

While considering what to say, Sho idly poked and examined the Tanjiro figure with his fingertips and found that it was mostly set at this point. Thankfully, Yayoi once again took the lead in the conversation by saying there was time to figure it all out. Sho was happy to have something to work off of now that Yayoi spoke, but also felt bad that he couldn't find anything to say by himself.

"Kawai-san is right, we have time to figure it all out. And, uh, you gotta be doing something right by having enough money to take two total strangers out to lunch, right?" Sho offered, following up on Yayoi's statement, he definitely couldn't afford to do anything like that. He glanced at Yayoi who was watching for their food and added, "I hope so. Oh, and thanks again Murakami-san, this'll be my first decent meal in a while!"
