Turn to the Left; Hanako, Kiku

Yesterday hadn't been great. School today hadn't been the best. And so, not long after school let out, a Kiku who was very, very tired turned to something she kept reading about in all those pink magazines targeting girls her age, but had never actually tried: retail therapy.

A boutique with an awkward English name she couldn't pronounce stood up high in front of Kiku, stylish, illustrated posters lining the windows advertising upcoming summer fashions with attractive women in various states of dress. Kiku frowned. She couldn't pronounce most of the titles on the posters, either.

The hipness of the store was clearly meant to appeal to high school girls with a bit too much money on their hands - it should have been perfect for her, but even still, Kiku found herself feeling a bit apprehensive. It wasn't like she had never shopped for clothes before, but everything she could see through the windows seemed just a little... chic, compared to the frumpy, modest attire that populated most of Kiku's wardrobe.

So even as other groups of girls wearing the same Taiyoutono uniform as her eagerly made their way into the shop, Kiku stood off to the side a little, nursing a can of vending machine coffee and silently debating whether this was even worth spending her money on - or if it would make her feel any better.

My feet hurt.
I wish Machi were here.
None of these stores even have Alice and the Pirates.

Honestly, complaining about mundane things in her mind was a definite step up for Hanako. She She wore nothing special really. Blue jeans, canvas sneakers and a white top covered by an orange zip up hooded sweatshirt and a black trucker hat of all things for some reason. A plain looking tan purse dangled from one shoulder and the stark-haired, pale-eyed girl drifted right past Kiku without giving the shop she was going to consider going in a second glance.

Actually, it was a lot more complicated than that. She had totally changed her hairstyle and hid it over with a wig that made it look like she'd never bothered for…reasons. Everything that happened in her life lately just felt increasingly stupid. She was mainly just pushing herself forward on momentum and looking forward to the rare high points. At least she didn't really have anything to complain about in school, right?

She paused a few steps back and looked over he shoulder to the girl she just walked past, getting a proper look at her. ”Oh, Hello Kiku-chan. How are you?” Ah, she always seemed to have such a hard time of things. Hanako just wanted to put her own issues aside for a moment and make sure she was doing okay whenever she encountered her.

Kiku didn't even notice the other girl walking past until she backtracked to greet her. Wait, who was this? Had they met before?

Kiku blinked. She recognized her from... oh! They had met in the ruins.

"Um. O-Oh, hello." Kiku's free hand reached back to scratch her head. She hadn't expected to run into this girl again any time soon. And had she done something with her hair? It looked... just a little different, even with the hat covering most of it.

Right. Small talk. "I'm, uh. Alright." Good start, but... Kiku fished for a name and just couldn't think of one. Wouldn't it be rude to ask? "I-I haven't visited these shops before, but I figured I, uh... th-that I m-may as well." It came out as an awkward, half-finished thought. Not as good a start. Redirect the conversation: "H-How are you doing?"

”Holding in there.” She said, with a smile. She was going though a few heavy things, but no way she was gonna burden Kiku with any of that. The poor girl was having a hard time just initiating a normal conversation. ”Nothing to really complain about, but you're expanding your wardrobe?”

She glanced back to the store, just as the thought was forming. The more she chewed on it, the better it seemed to her, she smiled back at the younger girl. ”I'm not doing anything special right now, would you like some company?” Yeah, it was nice to have some context for this girl other than encountering her in the ruins or accidentally making her feel bad about having feelings.

Truth be told, she could do with a few new outfits herself. Her closet was still rather bare, after all. It could be fun! If Kiku could just relax a little bit! It didn't seem like the girl was really wired for that sort of thing. Asking about that Ryuunosuke boy was probably a really bad idea, too. Perhaps she could get the full story on that sometimes when they were more comfortable around each other?

Kiku blinked once again, the arm scratching her head dropping to rest back at her side. "I m-mean, uh...." Truthfully, Kiku was about to pack up and just head for the dorms for the evening - she didn't really need any more clothes, and this probably was just going to make her feel worse after everything that had happened yesterday. She would just politely decline, and-

"S-Sure! If it's no problem, I mean." Why was she like this? "I-I was just getting ready to go in, after all." She smiled, trying her hardest to make it seem genuine.

Oh, Kiku was so precious! If she looked at her and kind of squinted, she didn't have much trouble imagining the girl as her own little sister. …perhaps a bit more jumpy than someone who shared her blood, though. She was cute and endearing.

She was also totally full of crap. She didn't know Kiku that long, but she could tell she clearly was not enjoying the prospect of going in a fancy clothing store. Was she only doing that because she thought Hanako wanted to? That was a terrible reason to do anything. ”Well, we can. But perhaps we can see what else is around? What do you say?”

Honestly speaking, Hanako had her fill of the mall in general as well. But it was alright so long as someone with her wasn't having an awful time of it. Between the two of them, they could find something interesting, no doubt! At the very least, it was an offer of an out if Kiku felt they had to go down their current path and didn't want to.

"Oh, n-no! This store's... I-I've been meaning to check it out!" Kiku was grinning awkwardly now, trying to plaster on a positive look. She turned on her heel - "We can just go in now!" - and too-quickly walked past the door into the warmly-colored boutique.

Immediately after stepping in, Kiku stopped in her tracks, eyes scanning the shop from side to side at the sheer amount of expensive clothes she had never even once considered wearing. It wasn't too large a store, having to squeeze itself in with the rest of the retailers that called Tanjiro home, but the diversity of clothing available made the most of what space it had.

Kiku blinked, and then realized she had no idea what she would even be shopping for. "I-I don't even know where to start."

She gave Kiku a second, serious look and adjusted that silly cap she was wearing to fit better. Maybe she was wrong? Maybe she really was going to go in and she was just painfully awkward about everything? What she actually wanted included? She could absolutely see the girl being just like that, after all. So, more arguing, she shrugged her shoulders. ”If you say so.”

In about five minutes, and no less than several feet inside the store, she was about ready to reverse that suspicion to before. She had a frown as she scanned over the place. All too trendy, and chic and sexy and a ton of words that would describe someone who was the absolute opposite of Hanako. She wasn't even surprised at Kiku's declaration, but just shrugged.”Ah, you know what? Don't even worry about it. Let's browse for a bit, and if we see something good, why not try it on and see if it suits you?”

Who knows? Perhaps Kiku was one of those really modest people who was from an affluent family. If that was the case, at least one of them could have afforded seriously shopping there. Hanako offered to take Kiku by the hand, and aimed herself in the general direction of the first thing she saw that looked like it might have fit her.

And so Kiku found herself being lead towards a rack of frilly tops, short-sleeved and light and obviously intended to be worn by attractive young women through the upcoming heat of summer. It wasn't too far from Kiku's normal wardrobe, though the rack right next to it suggested they were meant to go with pants - of which Kiku didn't own a single pair.

She thumbed through the shirts with a "Hrmm", pulling off one that seemed her size. "Uh, this one? Maybe?" Kiku presented it to the other girl - it was blue, with a not-very-subtle floral pattern running down the sides - it combined to paint a rather garish picture. Kiku just smiled hopefully.

She looked over the top offered for her opinion. She wobbled her nose as she had took it all in. Was that meant for herself Hanako? "I'd a bit much."

The floral pattern was too much. To heavy and clashed with the blue. "What's your favorite color,
Kiku-chan?"
The two girls had similar enough looks that anything that would look good on her would also suit her new friend. She dived into the rack to find something good for her.
