It was supposed to have been an easy night. The plan had been nice and simple: Treo would come over, they would order a pizza, and then they'd watch a movie or talk about life or whatever. It was a classic and cozy method of spending a little time with her now-boyfriend - a term that still sent a couple butterflies whizzing down Miyuki's throat. Of course, the plan had been contingent on Miyuki's mother being out late, like she was basically every other night but randomly wasn't this particular night because ugggh.

Miyuki slumped on the couch, leaning back in a posture that would almost assuredly lead to problems years down the line if she made it a habit. Kotone, meanwhile, was sitting at the kitchen counter, an amused smile on her face. "You know," she said, slowly twirling a glass of ambiguous brown liquid, "I could just go to my room if you two want to be alone."

"You could, but you won't," Miyuki grumbled, already knowing her mother's inevitable follow up.

Kotone just laughed. "Oh, am I that predictable?" She looked over at the clock. "You should probably go pick up the pizza, by the way. It'll be ready by the time you get there." Miyuki looked over as well - mom was right. The apartment complex they lived in was a few blocks away from a local pizza place, and the two often ordered for pick-up at night and walked over together. Miyuki groaned and pulled herself up from the couch, tossing on a light jacket and heading for the door.

"Yeah, I'm going," she said, slipping on a pair of shoes. "If Treo shows up early for whatever reason, just - ah shit," Miyuki hissed, hearing a knock on the door. She leaned in, still getting her second shoe on, and saw Treo in the peephole. "Uhh, one sec!" She called out. Both shoes were on, her clothes were acceptable, and her hair wasn't sticking out in some crazy place. Miyuki could hear Kotone snickering in the background as she looked herself over, and turned to stick her tongue out at her mother briefly before opening the door.

Yup, that was Treo. "Hi! Treo!" Miyuki said, immediately sounding anxious. "You're... early!" Kotone was visible from the front door, taking a sip of her drink and giving Treo a look resembling the expression of a predator eyeing its prey.

Treo had come right on time. By which he meant he had come fashionably early. He was worried about arriving late this time so this time he had decided to arrive early. He stepped through the door and gave a smile. Treo had chose to wear something completely out of his wheelhouse as it were. A T shirt. It had a simple design with a sports logo of some kind on it, along with jeans and trainers. Admittedly he had bought the outfit a couple days ago at that weird clothes shop in town.

"Yeah, I came earlier so I wasn't late..." He caught the eye of Miyuki's mother and offered her a small smile in reply, showing his slow turnaround since they last met, he looked a lot less, well dead. His fatigue had gone from his face and his white hair was neatly brushed, not to mention he looked a lot less lethargic in general. "Good to see you again Ma'am." He offered, before turning to Miyuki. "Did you want me to wait here or come with?" He asked, perching by the doorway, unsure of which to do.

"Come with!" Miyuki replied instantly, speaking with a little more force than she had intended. She hesitated, lowered her volume a bit, then added, "I mean, if you want. I mean... you should. Come with me. It's, uh - "

"Miyuki," Kotone interrupted in a gently chiding tone. "He's our guest. You can't make him do that. Ashdown-kun, why don't you have a seat next to me while Miyuki - "

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Miyuki interrupted. "That's, uh... Here, why don't you get the pizza, mom?"

"No. I'm old and frail," Kotone responded instantly.

Miyuki looked at her mother with a bland expression and replied flatly, "No, you're not."

"I'm old enough that a woman like me shouldn't go walking around alone at night," Kotone retorted. "You're still young and spry. Go get the pizza."

"So you're just sending your daughter in your stead?" Miyuki asked. There was a hint of desperation seeping into her voice, like if she left Treo alone with her mother, she would never see him again.

"Yes," Kotone replied, shrugging. She seemed resolute. Miyuki opened her mouth, as if to respond, but came up with nothing. She turned to Treo and gave him a questioning look and a shrug. Kotone took a long sip of an unidentifiable brown beverage.

Treo followed the conversation, his eyes slowly flicking across the room back and forth until Miyuki finally decided to get the pizza on her own. He saw off his girlfriend and slowly sat down next to Kotone, obviously a little bit nervous. No amount of shadows prepared you for talking to your girlfriend's mother. He didn't say anything at first, still a little shellshocked from last time she was here and last time Miyuki was there....

Now he was going to be alone with her. He cleared his throat, obviously a little nervous, leaving Kotone to ask the first question. He had never felt so awkward in all his life.

Once she was out the door, Miyuki gulped and said a quick prayer. She wasn't actually a religious person, but if there was a greater power out there, Treo likely needed their help.

Kotone put her glass down. "It's iced tea," she remarked, pushing the glass aside. "So, know that I'm going to be fully cognizant and sober for everything you're about to say while Miyuki's gone for the next ten minutes." Her warning was given in a stern tone.

In reality, Kotone didn't really have any great reasons to be so harsh on Treo. Miyuki's last boyfriend had been awful, granted, but this one didn't seem so bad. Men were not subtle animals, in Kotone's experience - the complete bastards were easy to pick out of a crowd, as long as you knew what to look for. Satosu had definitely been a clear disaster waiting to happen, but Miyuki hadn't had the experience to recognize that. Kotone had thought it would be a good learning experience for Miyuki to let things play out naturally... though, the disaster had been much more destructive than she had thought. It seemed like she'd learned from it regardless, though. Kotone, although she had a few legitimate things to say at the moment, was really only messing with Treo because it was funny. She had to get her kicks somewhere.

"So," she started, maintaining firm eye contact. "you're not going to ask why I let my daughter wander the streets at night? You're not concerned?"

Treo looked at the glass for a short moment before giving a small nod of his head. So she was pretending to drink in front of her daughter..? Kotone was a lot sharper than he thought, not to mention there was something about her that put him immediately on edge. "I understand." Was all he could manage to choke out, quickly running a hand over his hair to messily restraighten it. Once her eyes focused back on him he paused for a long moment to answer the question. "I'm not going to ask that question because Miyuki is more than capable of defending herself." The answer seemed strange from one you would in this situation call her boyfriend, but it was meant with genuine confidence in her.

"I imagine you sent her alone with the same thoughts. That and if I wasn't here, how are you going to entertain yourself for ten minutes?" He gave a chuckle, slowly settling into the conversation. He dared not say more than was required, it was almost as if he was dealing with a lioness, desperate to protect her young. He waited patiently for her to talk again, showing his respect. Treo had been raised as a gentleman, as most people were in his agegroup.

The only hint of a reaction Kotone had to Treo's response was a blink. He was confident in her. That was certainly a positive sign, but it was also a major indicator that he didn't know what had happened. Kotone didn't want to assume anything, but most teenage boyfriends would not be okay with letting a significant other with that kind of trauma wander around alone... even if they were someone who could handle it, like Miyuki was.

The joke was a pleasant surprise. So, he had some fight in him - he wasn't just going to sit there and die while she tore him to shreds. Kotone found herself smiling slightly, unable to help herself. "I suppose all of that is true." The smile dropped quickly.

"Of course, the main reason I'm okay with it is that she's magically immune to physical attacks. I'm assuming you know this as well." Kotone continued to watch Treo, gauging his reaction.

As her smile dropped Treo almost choked on nothing. Who had told her? How much did she know...? The teen surprisingly went slightly paler. It was almost as if all his confidence had in fact been torn to shreds. "Yes. I did know that." His answer was short and to the point. It wasn't as if he wouldn't say more than that, but every time she seemed like she was just a lot of rumor, Kotone pulled his words down with a simple sentence. Finally he gathered up his courage and nodded his head slowly. "I also know about her issues. But recently I've been helping her get through those. Especially the L word." He said, getting a bit more confident.

"I asked her about the latter before. It was a sad story that no-one should have to suffer." It was said with surprising compassion from the Wild Card, empathy not a skill he was fond of using, but more time with Miyuki had made it a lot easier to understand her.

Ahah. Yes. He'd gone white. This was great. Miyuki needed to get boyfriends more often.

Whatever joy she received from Treo's flustered response completely bypassed the emotion on her face. She looked him down coldly, raising an eyebrow at his words. When he admitted that he knew about her 'issues,' she responded with a quiet, "oh?" Her eyes glazed over as Treo continued, as if she were analyzing his words to figure out exactly how much Treo knew.

Once he finished, Kotone frowned. She allowed a quiet moment to pass, then asked, "How much do you know?" It was an order, not a question. "And how much of it was from her?"

Her cold stare made it feel like he had clearly said the wrong thing. How much did he know? Miyuki was definitely a complex individual and that was what made her so interesting. That and how she just wanted to move on in life. It gave him something to care about and work towards. He had heard some things, nothing concrete. Especially since half of it had come from that stupid cowboy, who could have even been lying to him.

"Admittedly... not much. I just know there was an incident." His documents didn't go that far back, save for the garbled mess of a statement Akiko gave, not that he believed it. "I kind of... this is going to sound kind of silly Ma'am, so I don't want to offend. But if I want to know more about it, I want to hear it from Miyuki herself. Its not fair to dig up other people's pasts just because of curiousity." Clearly not Treo's normal reaction, but it was a show of... compassion? Or at least the closest Treo got to compassion.
