I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Chieko had made no effort to be punctual. To be honest, she wasn't sure why she'd been invited, beyond to act as a potential deterrent. So as the meeting time had approached, she'd stopped to have a smoke, and then, after thinking about it a bit more, she had another. Enough to calm her nerves before she walked into this ticking time bomb of a chat.

...Okay, so maybe she was a bit nervous.

She shuffled up the stairs with her hands stuffed into the pockets of her varsity jacket. She was aware enough of the basic situation that had led up to this, because she'd been there the first time Makoto had tried to have it handled. When she'd seen what lay behind his mask. A lot had suddenly made sense at that point. Most of it she didn't like to think about.

God, this was a walk. Why was Kyo's office on the fourth floor? On that note, why hadn't Chieko taken the elevator? Beyond pure stubbornness, she guessed. As she approached the top, she could hear voices coming through the door -- heated ones. Great...

"Speaking of, I invited Makoto's girlfriend t' this little pow-wow. The two things a man fears more'n death itself, the cops and his own girlfriend. Should I borrow a nuke silo from the military for added deterence, or d'ya think this is enough?"

Chieko snorted, and pressed herself up against the wall. Kyo really didn't know Makoto very well if she thought he was at all afraid of her... if he was, he wouldn't have been throwing his weight around with Road and Building as much as he had been. No, in the weeks since Nana died, it'd become more and more obvious that if he'd ever seen her as anything, it was as a tool, not a girlfriend.

An unfamiliar man's voice came through the wall, and she bowed her head as she listened in.

"How all this martyr complex bullshit hits the people that care about you a hundred times worse than any 'price' you think you're paying for the greater good."

...God, wasn't that the truth.

She lifted herself off the wall, stepped through the door, finding it thankfully unlocked, and cleared her throat. "Count one of the guests here," she said, not really sure how to introduce herself. She slipped her shoes off and the slippers on before walking into the room, taking a seat on the couch.

"...And I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm pretty sick of people sacrificing themselves for the greater good myself," Chieko added. She looked around. "...Guests of honor aren't here yet, I see."

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Kyo kept her mouth closed when Seiji voiced his thoughts on martyr complexes. She kept her eyes on the door for a few long moments, and it opened. Kyo didn't look surprised, although the words Chieko lead with as she took off her shoes drew a grimace from Kyo.

"Ain't we all, though... sick of it, I mean," Kyo said. "And it's true, when ya get down to it. Although sometimes life ain't nice enough t' give ya a choice between somethin' you'll hate yourself for and somethin' that'd let ya live with yourself after choosin'."

Eri nodded slightly at this, a thoughtful look coming over her face. She seemed to understand what Kyo was driving at; perhaps she'd even made such a choice in her own way, at some point in the past. But the woman coughed into her fist, thinking it prudent to forestall any further talk along those lines. It was quite tangential to why they were all here. "In any case, seeing as Makoto is only half a man, I suspect Chieko's presence here may only be half as effective. Erm, no offense to you, Chieko."

"...Who are you and what have you done with my mom, impostor," Kyo said in deadpan, without looking at Eri. "You gave yourself away by lettin' on a sense o' humor. Anyway, no, it's just the twins, us here now, and Shin."

Eri poked her tongue out at Kyo, and stood up, walking around the table to outstretch her hand toward Chieko. Kyo watched her, blinking in bafflement.

"Hello, Chieko-san. I'm Kyo's mother. You can call me Eri if you like," she said.

"Who are ya and what have you done with my mom?" Kyo mumbled under her breath, eyebrows having disappeared into her hairline. The Eri Charinko she'd known before coming to Nagashima wouldn't have been so warm and welcoming to a girl like Chieko, not that Kyo remembered. Or had she only been strict with Kyo specifically because she was family?

Shin had actually had the day off -- something that he hadn't had in the weeks since returning from Hokkaido -- and had taken the opportunity to sleep in until 7AM and then go for a long run, which had cleared his head enough to handle the situation they were all meeting at Charinko's "office" about. He had showered, gotten dressed, and then walked over. Four flights of stairs up the back of the building, a small handful of fairly well-camouflaged security cameras outside -- slightly more than a handful, he noted after a moment, of a fairly discrete wireless brand available for consumer purchase -- and the lower three levels dedicated to legitimate, sleeper-owned businesses. Other than the Private Investigator. Though that was still technically legitimate, Shin simply had his prejudices.

Rubbing the spot on his face where he had been bruised in the park, he took off his freshly-repaired glasses and looked at them for a moment, stalling. The spot-weld repairs that Naoya had done on them made them fit well enough but didn't make them fit right. He shook his head. He was wasting time to try to not be involved in what would obviously be interpersonal drama that he should rightfully have no stake in. The situation just had to be escalated enough to get the police involved.

He went up the stairs.

To anyone inside, the approach of someone without a persona might be somewhat alarming, when that didn't match the numbers that they had been expecting. Shin found the door just sliding shut, and went on to let himself in -- it was clear that they were all in the "loudly discuss the nature of the problem before the meeting actually begins" portion of the events. They were on to "Martyr Complexes" at the moment, so he assumed they were talking about one of the young women from Osaka. Part of him was tempted to sit this out, and just have a cigarette on the external stairs while they talked everything out, but it seemed to him that would probably not go over well.

But there was no better way out than through.

He opened the door, doing so slowly so as not to accidentally strike anyone with it.

After glancing at who all was present -- both the elder and the younger Charinko, an unknown young woman, Fujiwara, and Maki Yamada -- he entered and simply said: "Good afternoon."

Seiji had his own opinions about the subject. As usual, he felt like something of the maverick in the conversation. He shot Kyo a look as she lamented. Not his usually profound, vague irritation at her everything when she was busy sticking her nose where it didn't belong. It was more of an resigned exasperation.

What he had to say in response, he kept to himself. Everyone was quickly moving onto a new subject anyways. No point lingering. Shortly after that, Chieko showed up.

He was nonplussed. Everything he understood meant there had to be some undercurrent of hostility, but they had bigger things to worry about than getting in each other's way. She didn't go for that hare-brained scheme Chika cooked up because she thought it was the right thing to do and Makoto quickly went for because someone else was doing all the hard work and taking the risk.

She didn't seem unpleasant. She had the affectations of someone in a gang, but she'd not gone out of her way to make him or anyone else miserable as far as he knew. Reluctantly, he was ready to say she was okay? It was kind of an enigma what she saw in Makoto. He'd only seen the guy's bad points, and it wasn't like he knew what girls wanted all the time so…

"Nice to actually get introduced."
That's right, they vaguely aware of each other. But she stayed out of Persona-user stuff and he kept out of what he felt was half a step from a yakuza front, so while they had learned each others names second-hand and could put faces with it, it was a real live and let live sort of distant arrangement. "I'm Yu's friend. Seiji Fujiwara. Nice to meet you."

"Maki Yamada with the NPD, likewise pleased to meet you."
With no need to discipline Seiji and no real desire to get into the conversation, after a friendly if cool introduction, she'd polished off her coffee and looked to Eri and Kyo. "May I have another?"

Her stimulant consumption had been rising as of late as a matter of course.

Someone other than Chieko arriving alone without a Persona wasn't a shock to Seiji. Unless they all had profoundly bad luck, Kou Goto wasn't going to get hopelessly entangled in this with a vision of a gold butterfly and a close call detour on his way to the meeting.

When the door opened, again and it wasn't Kou, he stood up and showed genuine surprise. "Inspector Imoto, good afternoon…you feeling okay?"

"Why, what's the matter?"
She had her own regards to offer, but Seiji had apparently derailed her entire train of thought with just seven words.

The youngest male present didn't say anything, but glanced to Shin expectantly. Either he was gonna tell them or make it clear it was a matter he wanted to keep to himself, or at least not make public. No matter what way it was going, definitely wasn't his call to spread a person's personal affairs like that around.

"None taken," Chieko said in response to Eri. She gave Eri's hand a light shake when it was offered, before returning her own to her jacket's pocket. She seemed nice enough, though the remaining greenhair's disbelief made it clear enough this wasn't normal behavior from her. Begged the question of whether or not Eri was being genuine about it, or if she was just pretending to be polite. It was usually the latter, in Chieko's experience.

She nodded to Seiji -- she was only vaguely aware of him, and only because of his connection to Makoto's other half. Maki's introduction got a bit more of a response -- another nod, but more carefully, and Chieko looked noticeably uncomfortable as she gave it.

She looked up as the door opened up, sinking further back into her seat as she saw Shin's face. It would have been better if she could have been literally anywhere other than here, but it certainly hadn't worked out that way.

Before the room could descend back into awkward arguments, however, the door opened once again. Yu stepped through first, holding the door open for Makoto to walk through. There was a noticeable bruise around Makoto's eye and on his jaw, and Yu had matching ones on his knuckles and cheek. Makoto took a moment to look around at the gathered group before scowling and turning his head away, and shoving his hands into his pockets.

Yu lifted a hand in greeting to Seiji, before turning his gaze toward Shin, and then to Maki, and frowned.

"...I wasn't expecting this many policemen," he said. Insurance, probably. Making sure Makoto couldn't do something stupider than what he was already planning. He put his hand on Makoto's shoulder for a second and motioned toward the couches with his head, and Makoto started walking over, Yu trailing behind. Yu took a seat next to Seiji, and Makoto on the other side of him. Makoto's gaze seemed fully focused on the table separating the two couches.

Yu gave a careful glance over toward Chieko, but she'd put an arm on the arm rest and had started staring out the window.

Makoto took his hands out from his jacket pockets and gave his arm a scratch. His head was still bowed, his gaze on the table.

"...You know, Charinko, I wasn't exactly expecting you to call out half the goddamn city just to tell me I'm an asshole," he said, darkly.

Kyo smiled a friendly, if uncomfortable smile at Shin as he answered. She glanced back at her mother, looking a bit perplexed, but not remotely skeptical. She knew her mother well enough to know when she was behaving unnaturally, and this was most certainly genuine. Of course, it helped that Kyo knew what had brought on the jab at Makoto's manhood: the fact that they'd been talking about that time Kyo had kicked it before the first of their guests arrived. Perhaps knowing that Chieko had been dating Makoto, or still was (honestly, the way gang girls went about their relationships, Kyo often couldn't tell where the unspoken divide between "in a relationship" and "not in a relationship" was, or where "friends with benefits" often happened to land in the intermittent in-between fluctuations. It was kind of nebulous, and Kyo had spent way too long either adamantly refusing commitment or committing perhaps a little too hard to people to understand that twilight zone between social norms.

In any case, Kyo decided to address Yu first rather than the surly Makoto. She shrugged, shifting to face him and slipping her hands into her pockets, giving him quite a natural grin, though her tone remained serious.

"Wouldn't be much of an intervention unless there was someone here whose word carried weight," Kyo said. "When your brother asked me t' investigate your dad, I think his exact words were somethin' like... 'I would like nothing more than to handle this before it gets a chance to explode, I'm instead going to defer to you and see if even the woman who befriended Aleksandria Fyodor can see why I'm so panicked.'"

The truth that Kyo would carry with her to her dying day: because it was so much harder for her to memorize text than words she heard with her ears, she'd actually spent almost half an hour reciting the line to herself that morning, just so she wouldn't forget. Makoto probably would have mocked her for that, not she cared, but the intent was to throw those words right back in his face: not just the latter half, but also the part about it not exploding. It felt a bit like a skeevy lawyer to do it, but Kyo wanted to make sure Makoto understood that she and he had very different definitions of what a situation "exploding" meant.

Shin waved off Seiji's question. The kid was a scanner, he should have known that at least one would be in attendance here, which would mean that his current situation would come up. The kid seemed level headed -- firmly in the "not likely to be a problem" category in Shin's internal classification system -- and Shin wouldn't be opposed to mentioning that he was bereft of his persona. That would actually be pertinent information to share; however, the timing was off.

He stepped aside as the two "definitely a problem" individuals came through the door. He retreated to a patch of floor near the wall in the quarter of the room Maki was occupying, nodded to her, and remained quiet. There was at least one person here whom he didn't know, and figured that they would simply ignore him unless he made himself more notable.

The Nakagawa brothers entered. Yu apparently hadn't anticipated police involvement; Makoto had apparently not understood the sheer number of people Kyo would bring in to the equation. The former made sense: unless things had changed, the police were still not entirely trusted by the adolescent persona users, gripped as they were in hormonal rebellion. The latter made less sense: if anything, there were fewer people present than could be reasonably expected from an intervention planned by the younger Charinko.

Through the whole proceedings, he held his tongue. As he understood it, he was here to add weight to what the others were saying, not make his own case for why patricide was bad. Come to think of it, hadn't they had a problem with attempted fratricide previously? He quietly wondered what was next.

---The following is being posted for NonSequitur, who is unable to access the forum at the moment---

Seiji got the cue and gave a quiet nod when Shin made it clear they were not talking about his problem at that moment. Besides, it was time for the main event anyways. No more distractions and sideshows and upsetting people for ultimately no reason.

Not that his emotions weren't getting the better of him too. If that weren't the case, and he was seeing much clearer, he would have realized that Kou Goto was not coming. Therefore with Cheiko accounted for there should have been no one else present who'd not had a visit to a grimy subterranean lab complex.

But he didn't. Combine that with the Nakagawa twins arrival and he was already admonishing himself to get his head back in the game.

Seems like the twins were also getting their aggression out.before they showed up. In a more direct sort of way. He smiled for once as Yu was there and seemed to relax and recline a bit. No longer being around strangers and authority figures that were largely done with his childish antics.

"Well, here's the thing Makoto," Seiji began. "We all know you're an asshole. The bigger issue is the extent of it?"

He honestly had no intention of touching how murdering someone was not considered an 'explosion', but he'd been familiar enough with Makoto to understand why he said that.

Chieko had conspicuously wished to avoid Maki's attention when she arrived, with no reason to bother the matter further she quietly obliged by gladly shifting her focus on the next two arrivals.

That would be the twins. Maki shot them both her usual stern frown given to those who she typically suspected of being up to something with little distinction. Makoto was the main problem there, but Yu's tolerating and no doubt enabling him to act as he pleased so far contributed to it. She spoke when everyone was present.

"For the moment, I'd like to set aside the custody issue that provoked this concern that brought us all here today. Obviously, something is profoundly wrong if we all have just reason to suspect you would attempt to murder Kou Goto because you feel cornered. This should have been addressed long ago."

Chieko watched hesitantly as the brothers took their seats. They'd both spoken up, but she'd found herself focusing on their body language. Yu looked guarded and nervous, but Makoto was stiff. Jittery. It was the same look he'd had when he'd first come to Road and Building after Nana's death, begging them to do something. It was the look of a cornered animal.

If Seiji was trying to provoke Makoto, it didn't quite work -- the most reaction he got was a brief glare. Kyo and Maki's comments, on the other hand, got more pointed looks, especially as Kyo recounted Makoto's words back at him. He bit back the urge to make a quip about her practicing it in front of a mirror, and instead took a breath before speaking up.

"Let me make something very fucking clear," Makoto snarled. "Before Susaki posted up that thread, I had no intentions of killing that man. I had no idea he was even going to be in Nagashima. At that point, I was still waiting to see if Charinko had managed to resolve anything. That tells me that that prediction popping up means Charinko did something to get him into Nagashima in the first place, and that he's going to force me into a situation where I feel I have to do something."

He laughed hollowly before continuing. "And let me tell you, the last thing I want is to be anywhere in the vicinity of him! So you tell me why I'd feel cornered, Yamada-san."

"Dipshit!"

The word exploded from Kyo's mouth the moment Makoto had turned his question back on Maki Yamada. Her hands withdrew from her pockets and instead folded over her chest; she walked out into the middle of the room and began to pace back and forth with quick, angry strides. Before Eri could even get a word in edgewise (the woman had opened her mouth to chastise Makoto), Kyo began to rant like a freight train chugging down the tracks at top speed, late to its delivery time, skirting all rules of railroad safety in favor of the conductor's paycheck.

"I don't even know where t' begin explainin' how much is wrong with that! The fact that you were so willin' t' go along with Chika's plan before you'd even asked me t' look into it? The fact that Kou Goto already knew about Yu before I even spoke to him! The fact that there are a zillion other options you shoulda thought of before Chika's plan or murder, rangin' from nicey-nice stuff like askin' these people right here for help — " (Kyo gestured wildly in the direction of Shin and Maki) " — or if you really wanted t' stoop low for this shit, why he hell would ya skip right t' murder and, and, and... brainwashing?!"

This last word came out as an almost-shout. She whirled on Makoto, unfolding her arms, hands clenched into fists, and pointed straight at him.

"The funny thing is! The idiot woulda come to Nagashima without any prompting, numbnuts!" she snapped. "The owner o' the local bar got arrested for money laundering. He lives out in the sticks. His buddy works in Nagashima. So obviously they're gonna come here t' hang if they ain't got someplace local t' get drunk. I recommended a certain bar that an acquaintance owns so I could keep tabs on him if that happens. Then he mentioned having a son. A single one. Named Yu Nakagawa, who he was plannin' to visit. Well well, isn't that interestin'. And here I was lookin' to solve that problem peacefully and in a way everyone can be happy with, convince Kou not to interfere with your upbringin', and see if Yu maybe wants to get to know his god-damn father. How in the bloody fuck am I supposed t' do that if you jump right to turnin' him into a fucking pincushion the moment he shows up in town, eh?! Do you have any finesse? Critical thinkin' skills?! I'm guessing not since you jumped right to blaming the whole thing on me without even asking about it, but of course you only see me as the girl who befriended Aleksandria Fyodor. You thought I'd just keep quiet? I don't sit around and do nothing when someone is actually in danger, dipshit. And the last thing I'd ever do is let someone I know become a murderer."

Finally, she took a breath. Eri sat dumbfounded, staring at her daughter with wide eyes and a slack mouth. A few moments passed, and then she raised her hands and made silent, mock-applause motions with them.

"...You'd better give me a granddaughter someday," she declared. "I want to see you put that mothering talent to good use."

"Oh, shut up, mom," Kyo grumbled. She turned to Shin, still glowering but intent on getting the man's response this time. "Anyway, this is where things currently stand. I've agreed t' ask Yu if he wants to talk t' Kou Goto. I may have also warned the guy that his other son, Makoto, really doesn't want him in his life and may've plotted with an unnamed girl t' get him thrown back in prison. Kou's a bit of a spineless weasel, but he's also got a prideful streak. He was workin' up a head of steam about his 'custody rights' when I tried to explain that pursuin' that might go bad for him, but I think I've made my point. He doesn't know anything about Personas, only that someone put a stop t' what was goin' on before it could hurt him. Knowin' that, he might be amenable t' anything you and Detective Yamada have t' say to him. Same for Seiji here, since he's the one who stopped it. All three o' you could probably do more on that front than I can..."

Kyo looked back over her shoulder at Yu.

"That's just where things stand right this moment," said Kyo. "The hope is that this situation can be resolved in a way that gets everyone involved, in this case Makoto, Yu, and Kou Goto, what they want most out of it. Kou did seem t' get indignant about his custody rights, but I think his issue's more a sense o' control in his own life. He's at a place where he's bein' bullied by old ladies at the grocery store 'cause he can't afford t' lose his job as a manager, so if he feels he can get control of his life in any other way, he's prone t' do it. Talkin' with him is gonna involve keepin' an eye toward that, and gettin' him t' back off would involve showin' him a better way t' get that sense o' control back. I believe he really does wanna get t' know his son, though. I know things didn't go so well the last time you tried reachin' out t' family, but you can maybe have another shot here, if you're willin' t' talk with him."

At last, Kyo glanced at the cops, eyes hovering on Maki before turning at last to Shin.

"What I wanna ask you two for is..." Kyo began slowly, "...to just involve yourselves in this however ya see fit. We're talkin' about a convict who's served his time and been released under legal terms. My feel for him is that he's not quite honorable or super-reformed or nothin' but he's the sorta guy who at least knows the blame is on him for his own shitty situation, and that's somethin' you can work with. It might be good if he knows there's a cop or two who's interested in makin' sure he establishes himself as an honest member o' society, rather than just watchin' him for signs of a relapse or whatever. I dunno. You two'd have a better idea what t' do or what t' say. I don't have a lotta experience with policemen showin' concern, respect, or, well, care for anythin'." (She rubbed at the side of her head, where a certain officer had once stepped on it.) "So I'll defer t' two o' the only decent ones I've known... no offense, I mean... it's just that that's a little outside my horizon-border, you understand. Sometimes I think I mighta turned out different if I'd known you two a couple years sooner, though. So, maybe it'd help in his case, too."

[above the cut is from NonSequitur, below is me.]

Seiji stood and took off his glasses, he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Sorry about this, I'm going to go stand outside, for a bit. Be back in a bit." He put a hand down on Yu's shoulder and smiled. "Sounds better than I was expecting when it's put that way, it'll be fine!"

Cheery optimism aside, he didn't wait any further, and beat a hasty retreat for the balcony overlooking the area and attached to the staircase, lest he gives yet another unhelpful outburst. The door shut behind him and there was nothing more than to let him cool an already quite provoked temper.

Maki had remained quiet when Makoto spat his challenge at her, and she watched as Seiji withdrew himself before he let his sometimes acrid tongue get the better of him at a critical juncture.

She cleared her throat and started speaking calmly.

"Now then, where should I begin?"

"I feel you've probably forgotten a few names and faces in that estimation. You have worked with Sanda at one point, did you not?" It was more to be politeness to the party who was present than wanting to talk in depth about Kyo's confirmation bias, though. "Kou Goto has served his sentence due for his actions. I see no reason to contribute to harassment. The goal here is to find the best footing in which to proceed further."

"Having some recourse makes quite a difference. I'll have to meet him personally to say further, but I can make it clear he can expect not to be singled out for his previous transgressions. If he simply wishes to reconnect with Yu, and is informed that their current foster parents are up to the task and he's still a part of his life if he chose, that might be the end of it."

That was the ideal. "There could be a major complication if he does choose to fight for custody though legal channels. Just having it publicly known that one's father has been found guilty of a serious crime would in turn damage the reputation of both brothers. It would not be unreasonable to have him realize this. So long as that is his sole motive he probably mentioned such matters as a response to a perceived challenge and nothing more."

It didn't sound like he was coming into their lives for some ulterior motive yet.

"There is a second issue here, of course. Makoto, you are quite correct in that you had no premeditation to attack him. And indeed, have no desire to be around him. Though I've already witnessed firsthand out you react to undesirable situations when no one is present to act as a check." It was no coincidence her attention was focused on Yu with this. If there was anyone who had hope of influencing him prior, it was his brother.

"Makoto Nakagawa, you seem interested in nothing more than things than life going smoothly and without obstructions. When that doesn't happen, you've acted drastically several times in the past, yes?"

She got to the point. "I'd prefer if we could settle that matter today. I imagine much more hinges on your peers and brother than my own words but to be perfectly frank? If you can't control yourself I have no qualms taking measures to prevent further incidents in the future."

----

Shin waited as Maki spoke, head cocked to the side. He was beginning to think that she was a better cop than he was, which didn't trigger feelings of inferiority: he felt guilt over having left her to handle things on her own, and happy that they were on the same side. Of course, they were in a situation where "sides" properly shouldn't matter. They were all here to achieve a peaceful solution for the situation.

After Maki finished her tirade -- so many tirades; it seemed as if everyone was monologuing their hearts out, and he didn't exactly want to add to that -- Shin cleared his throat and stood up straighter.

"Are we even sure that someone in this room is going to be responsible for the murder?" he said, simply. "Last I checked, no one had a monopoly on stabbing."

He took a second to compose further thoughts on the situation.

"Moreover, custody battles are not that quick. If he makes noise about putting the paperwork in -- I'll leave actually talking to him to Yamada if she wants, though I'd be perfectly happy to do it -- " he then turned and spoke directly to the two young men in question, "we can find you two an attorney who can start drawing up the paperwork to have you emancipated. That should at least jam things up for a while as the courts try to sort things out."
