She deftly shifted her phone to her left hand and supported the small bags with her left forearm for a moment as she shook Liam's hand. She was mindful to use a firm but controlled grip. Being neither too hard a grasp nor too limp was only appropriate etiquette for the greeting, after all. "It's not as impressive as it sounds, really." People could get the wrong idea about just what policework entailed if their only frame of reference was TV. Her own set of circumstances were wildly atypical, and even most of her time was paperwork. She did note that there were almost two conversations happening parallel with four people who happened to bump into each other. A bit awkward, but nothing she couldn't manage. At least introductions were all taken care of. "Thank you, senpai." It hasn't been strictly applicable for years, but she fell back into the habit easily enough. "It's been interesting lately." Her career had taken off, but it was starting to feel like a dubious tradeoff, at times. But not the sort of thing to go into detail on with present company. From the sounds of it, Mayako had enough issues to deal with without someone unloading their professional troubles on her and no doubt two people old enough to be in college at most wanted to hear about the more visceral details of how a job you love can still be problematic. "Senpai, perhaps we should catch up sometimes?" It perhaps would have been better to defer that until after they'd parted ways with Liam and Osamu? It was currently just idle, friendly chatter, but it was rude to go into too much detail and leave people out. Speaking of, for the benefit of their two more youtful companions, she spelled out a fact they might have already realized: "Maeshima-senpai and I went to the same high school, you see." |

So a handshake is an acceptable greeting here thought Liam as he took a firm grip of Maki's hand. He had completely forgotten any japenese greetings so he just did what cam naturally and thankfully it worked out. Liam then turned to Osamu introduced himself to the group, before asking Liam where he was from. "Oh, I guess I should clarify that, I come from Manchester. It's quite different from here, except the people, they're pretty much the same, maybe a bit less rude" Liam responded with a small laugh, before looking over at Mayako and Maki as they continued their own conversation. The two clearly had history, but the extent of which Liam was still trying to figure out. However, As Liam was analyzing what the two were saying, trying to figure out the connection; Maki just turned to him and Osamu and revealed they had gone to high school together. "Oh should've pieced that together really" responded Liam with an annoyed expression, more toward himself than any of the other three in the group. Edited by Thomas Simple, Mar 20 2017, 03:02 PM.

"Oooooh!" Osamu was a bit surprised of finding someone that's from far away. Manchester was from somewhere in England, right? His geography needed a bit of fine-tuning, as he was very sure it was somewhere in Europe, just not exactly where. And Osamu, being rather curious, had no qualms in asking Liam the following question. "Sounds like getting here was quite a journey! What made you arrive here in Japan?" And then Maki answered his question, with an answer that might or might not reek in self-depreciation. "Booo, don't say that, you work with the law! Surely your own piece of work must be as important as any other, it's what allow a functioning protecting force!" He rebutted her, his aggrandizing words coming from her upbeat attitude rather than an actual attachment with the law. It may be a thankless job, but it was still pretty important! But not only, Maki also revealed that she and Mayako were old classmates, something that seemed rather obvious, but still amazed Osamu. "Oh boy! That sounds so cool! It is a shame I may not run into the same luck, as I moved to this city not long ago on the prospect of going to college." |

Mayako's expression shifted evermore towards neutral, the word 'functioning' having set it off. She wouldn't speak up her issues, of course- not only would that be rude, telling two newcomers about the corruption and crime issues in the city that seemed to ebb and flow consistently for the worse would be a bad idea. Nobody knows how immigration to Nagashima was effected by it, but it definitely had been. Being called 'senpai' by an underclassmen after not hearing it for years felt nice to Mayako. Feeling a little better about something, her smile returned to appraising and genuine, but with some pride mixed in there too as well. "You don't have to thank me in the slightest," Mayako responded. "Especially when you say your life is specifically interesting. I definitely wouldn't mind taking you up on your offer." Turning towards the two newcomers to Nagashima, Mayako put on her best 'convince' face, which was useful both in getting someone to listen to her when they were being troublesome and reassuring people without making it clear what it was on purpose.. "Well, welcome to Nagashima, Oshiro San and... Why-old-san" Mayako stated, hoping she didn't stumble too badly on the western name. Clearly, that was something she'd have to work on continuously. |

Maki wasn't quite sure on the punchline of Liam's remark. Did he mean that the people of Manchester, England were more ill-mannered than the average local resident? Or was it the contrary? Not having had a chance to ever visit the United Kingdom, her frame of context was only local. She'd been around long enough, and encountered enough people that it could have gone either way in her opinion. "I see." Well, it was an agreeable enough way to kill a bit of time. But alas, it was not to be, Maki's phone rang and and she fished it out of her pocket. Glancing at the number, she answered it without hesitation. "Yes, everything alright? …I see." She nodded, somewhat gravely. "Wait, you're stranded where? Alright, I'll be there shortly, don't get yourself into further trouble in the mean time." The conversation was short, and to the point on Maki's end, with a bit of a long-suffering quality. She set the phone aside and regarded those present. "My apologizes, but it seems I'll have to take my leave now. Senpai, we should catch up later, though." Whatever she had to do, it was urgent, and it had her leaving their company rather abuptly. |

"Oh it's nothing exciting, my father just got transferred to his company's branch here. It was honestly kind've nice, you can only wander around Manchester getting into trouble so many times before you feel the need to start a ruckus somewhere else" Liam responded, he knew Osamu was prying into his business but he didn't mind, he would do the same after all. Liam then turned to Mayako and was forced to hold back latter at the how Mayako pronounced his name. He hadn't been in the city for that long so everytime someone failed to pronounce his name it provided him with a small bit of entertainment Liam was about to respond to Mayako when Maki seemed to get an urgent call on her phone, as she left the group, leaving Liam a bit surprised at how quickly she exited the scene. "Oh, well goodbye the" Liam said as he did a little hand wave toward Maki as she walked away. |

"You got transferred here? Oh my, it sounds like it wasn't easy! Specially with an interesting sounding city. But hey! Now you got the chance to explore the new horizons Japan has to offer!" Osamu was completely unaware if Nagashima was the first city in japanese soil he stepped on, or if he was already used to the country, but nevertheless, giving the foreigner a warm reception would make him miss home a bit less. Suddenly, the ringing of a phone interrupted the conversation, a ringing that belonged to Maki, her voice sounding like something bad happened in the other end. Osamu looked at her a bit confused, but made no effort in stopping her, but did give her a heartly farewell when she had to excuse herself. "Bye bye! Take care!" He said, waving at her during her departure. And then, she turned to Mayako, who now had to deal with the new citizens of the city. "Thanks for the welcome, Mayako-san~!" His words followed with a bow to express his gratitude. "I do wonder, what does Nagashima have to offer? Any highlights?" |
