Spoiled Fruit; [Chisato/Ren/Ask First]

Ren took a step back with his left foot. It was clear Sonozaki weirded him out a bit, but unlike the headaches that came from issues such as his previous day, this was just plain offbeat. Still, there was no fear, depression, guilt, or any other such on his face for once. It was instead just someone trying to make out a confusing painting he had seen once (the name escaped him, but all he knew was that it was Vietnamese in origin).

But then Sonozaki had gone and turned towards him. Ren looked at the hand, but extended his left hand at first, before retracting it and using his right hand to shake it. Oh, pleased to meet you, Tomoyo-san," Ren stated. "Spend a lot of time around Westerners?" His voice was unsure, but it was for the most part normal and relaxed. His face did seem a bit strained and the smile forced- especially when he took a moment to glance at the massive amounts of sugar. Ugh, not American sweets, he thought to himself.

Bah, the treats herein are far too weak to be of any succulence, Aesop retorted. Partake in something more! Those... Oreos look absolutely scrumptious.

Yeah, no, I'm not weighing in at a Megagram from that stuff.

Heretical bastard! Aesop swore, and Ren felt a headache coming on.

Meanwhile, Mr. Taira was looking at the other two teenagers. They both gave him a bow, and at this he smiled, though it was a toss-up over whether it was in friendliness or in amusement at their being taken back. No matter the truth, he in turn gave them his own small bow. "So far, it is," he said to both of them. "I'm Aya Taira, Ren's dad. We were out shopping for groceries when he asked to get some coffee, and since he didn't come back immediately, his mother had me go take a look. Everything's alright, kids?" He turned, looking at his son interacting with the girl attempting to become a Sumo wrestler, and then at the haphazardly returned cans of coffee.

Once Tomoyo came closer to the group, Hideki noticed that her cart was filled to the brim with cookies and such things. Was she planning on eating all of that? Or does she just have a lot of younger siblings? He felt the latter made more sense, because she looked like she was buying for the winter.

"Ah, well, I was just buying the groceries, so I guess that'd also be included, hehe." He said, as he noticed how Chisato murmured something with an exasperated tone, something that might be a bit rude. But thankfully Tomoyo didn't hear it correctly, so at least they were safe. And then Ren introduced himself to her, as his father did the same to everyone. "Ah, there are no worries sir." Hideki answered, a bit worried that he apparently intruded into some family shopping. Hopefully Ren wouldn't mind.

And then, he turned to Tomoyo, looking a bit confused. "Hey, Tomoyo-san, are you buying for your family? Those are a lot of cookies." He said, pointing at her cart.

Ren's mark about Westerners made Tomoyo giggle. The girl shook her head.

"Nah, not really," she said. "Oreos are my delight simply because after dozens of cookie-treat testing, they appealed to me most. Super sweet, chocolate not overwhelming, but still apparent in the form of a cookie biscuit, plus who doesn't love a cookie you're supposed to lick the frosting off of on purpose?"

People with manners, Chisato thought in her head.

Fortunately, her attention was turned to the man who approached them and introduced himself as Ren's father.

"A pleasure to meet you, Taira-san," Chisato said politely. When the older man asked if everything was fine with them, Chisato hesitantly tucked her hair and added, "Err, yes, sir. Just the hassle of holiday grocery shopping, is all. I managed to knock a few coffee cans over due to my carelessness, but your son and my friend were kind enough to help me with that matter."

While Chisato's voice had returned to its calmer, in-control tone, she was still feeling rather tense. There were too many people. She had gone grocery shopping so she could ignore people and focus on her own tasks. So much for that and now she had to meet the most unfocused girl in all of school and gain the concern of both her schoolmate and a stranger boy.

Meanwhile, Tomoyo was still acting perkily.

"Holidays can do that to you, yeah," she said. "Hence why I don't bother with shopping for multiple items but the same good ol' stuff in bulk!"

Hideki had asked the silver-haired girl about her Oreos meanwhile about if she was buying for the family. She grinned.

"Well, of course I am!" she said. "And by that I mean, I buy for myself because mom hates junk food with a passion and I'm also eating for all my imaginary siblings."

Chisato did her best to repress a groan. The girl didn't mean to be so silly. She just was, she knew.

Kind of similar to how you try to be upbeat but you just can't, Lyudmila remarked to Chisato.

I did not warrant your opinion.

Tomoyo stretched her arms and looked at the counter ahead.

"So, guys? Are you doing anything after this? Oh, well, duh, you guys probably are, but maybe some of you are free to hang out and just go around to enjoy the long weekend?"

Ren blinked at Sonozaki's speech about the Oreos. "Ehm, ehx-" he stopped briefly, looking at the packaging and also being grateful he avoided slipping into Okinawan again. "How is that meant to be licked off? I'm fairly sure you're supposed to bite into it while they're stuck together." His smile looked a tad awkward (or was it nostalgic?), thinking back on when he last had Oreos. It had been, what, three or four years? He remembered it being fun to eat and tasty, but also that at some point, it went from sweet to overpoweringly filled with too much for his tastebuds. He'd stopped eating them after that, along with multiple other foods. Soon after, he'd discovered coffee.

Dress this up as much as you wish, Aesop commented. Attempts at denial of your replacement of addictions are fruitless. Ren didn't respond to his Persona however. The far more pressing matter of how to shop for groceries had come up.

"That's a different way of doing it," Ren stated. "Why would it be an either/or thing? We're buying a variety of stuff in bulk so that we don't have to come back here when we run out of one thing, like pork or something." His smile became a bit more genuine and honest, and for once didn't look weird at all. "I mean, wow, I'd hate to have no pork for awhile... which... we are." He sighed, and his expression moved to an unsure state.

Both Ren and Mr. Taira mimicked each other's questioning appearance over Tomoyo's bewildering statement over how much junk food she was getting for herself. Their brows raised in confusion, and they both looked as if they'd seen a breakdancing obese man make a fool of himself. While Ren's face remained frozen for a bit however, Mr. Taira managed to regain control of himself, blinking and briefly shaking his head to return back to his small smile. "Instead of buying things for just yourself, why don't you put back some of those Oreos and get some things your mother would like? I'm sure she would appreciate you doing something nice for her and making up for your mistake as well."

At Tomoyo's comment about things everyone was up to, Ren opened his mouth, but his father gave him a glance. Nodding and looking somewhat dejected, he spoke up to Tomoyo's question. "I'm pretty much studying or staying home for most of Golden Week," Ren said. "Hopefully, everyone else's is better off than mine. It sucks when going back to school's a bit of an improvement. Say, where do you all go to school?" Ren asked. Mr. Taira gave him a glance, clearly amused at his son's comment about school.

"Wait, there were rules to eating such cookies?" One might think that Hideki was asking that question in jest, but for anyone that knows Hideki well would know that it was a serious question. "Sometimes I lick the frosting off of cookies like that." Of course, it wasn't something he'd do on public, but he still couldn't negate the fact that he has done it before.

And then Ren questioned Tomoyo's methods of buying, and while he also was more accustomed to buying things in bulk, he still didn't exactly side with Ren either. "Maybe it depends on how much money you have available?" He said, doing a slight shrug, before Tomoyo stated something that made his stare at her wide eyed.

Junk food to eat for, her imaginary siblings? It probably was a bit rude, but his irises couldn't help but look at Tomoyo's abdomen. It wasn't even bulgy, how could she plan to eat a lot? "Um, Tomoyo-san? Wouldn't eating a lot cause, you know, a stomachache?" He asked, rather confused at her plan of eating her weight on cookies and junk food.

However, she then asked everyone about what kind of plans they had for the Golden Week. "Ah, well, I don't really have much plans for the week. Then again, I won't have all the time in the world, my working place will still be open, and they want me to still go there to work."

Hearing everyone's comments on Tomoyo's eating, Chisato let out a small sigh and pushed her glasses into place.

"Obviously none of you are that well-acquainted with Sonozaki, Tomoyo," Chisato said dryly. "She's been eating like this for years: inhuman capacities of sweets for days at a time and with no sense of shame or physiological consequences."

Tomoyo grinned.

"Aww, Chisato~ You know me so well~" Tomoyo gushed. "She's right, though. Eating this much Oreos is nothing! As easy as drinking a glass of water!"

Yeah, if that glass of water was pure dextrose solution, Chisato thought.

When Ren's father suggested buying something for her mother, Tomoyo's face soured, even if not intentionally.

"Oh, my mom? Well, her fridge is pretty full," she said. "Besides, she never likes anything I bring home for her. The one time I got her a Black Forest cake, she sent it off to the neighbors saying it was empty calories."

As she said this, her mouth had formed a scowl almost bigger than Chisato's current one. There was an obvious feeling of disdain towards her mother.

Regardless, she perked up again at everyone's responses.

"Oh, well, if you guys don't have any plans, there's this sweet promo taking place at one of the places I eat at. All-you-can-eat teppanyaki and sushi from the afternoon onwards. I usually go alone, but that's boring! Besides, you said you're going to Taiyoutono? All of us here happen to go there, too! It'd be a great way to get to know my fellow juniors as well as to welcome you to the academy! Isn't that right, Chisato?"

Chisato had for some reason started gazing elsewhere and had absently murmured, "Hm? Oh, yes, that'd be nice..."

The direction she was looking in didn't seem to have anything interesting in particular save for a bunch of shelves.

"See? This outing would be awesome if you guys wanted to do it!"

Yet again, father and son were mimicking each other without noticing it. Ren and Mr. Taira both had their mouths open, looking towards Tomoyo, then back to the spectacles-wearing girl who just told of it. They repeated it a few more seconds before they began to act differently. Ren looked to the one with the spectacles, face still clearly struck and speechless. "Wait, seriously? What- why- no, how is her metabolism so effective?" he sputtered out, surprise evident.

Mr. Taira, in comparison, had managed to recover from the surprise, though his face was decidedly neutral, the smile vanishing as he looked at Tomoyo. "That may be the case, but your mother may merely wish for a different sort of food to the ones you usually... prefer," he ended diplomatically, looking at the road to obesity. "Bring her some of her favorite fruit or vegetable then. I have the feeling that is what she prefers."

"Whaaaat?" Hideki gasped in surprised as Chisato explained how Tomoyo had apparently a very enviable metabolism. That was the only reason he could explain how she could eat so much, and still have a rather average frame. She then replied to a comment Ren's dad made, with an answer that apparently denoted some sort of... Annoyance? Possibly, her smile turned into a frown that somehow managed to beat Chisato's own frown. "Ah, well, he has a point, maybe it's best to just give her something different? I mean, when her fridge isn't as full." Was this fast metabolism something hereditary?

In any case, Tomoyo dropped an invitation unto everyone, which kinda sounded more like an excuse to invade an all-you-can-eat buffet with company than anything else. Although it wouldn't be with bad company, so it didn't sound too bad. "Aah, it sounds pretty neat, I can try going." He said, doing a small, unsure smile. He only hoped it wouldn't be too late in the afternoon, or else he wouldn't be able to go.

Tomoyo didn't try to show it, but she generally disliked things to do with her mother and being nice to her mother to begin with. She offered a pursed-lip expression before glancing to the side.

"I suppose I can consider that," she said slowly.

Though yeah, even if she gave her mother the healthiest thing in the world, she was bound to be criticized for it.

However, word about Hideki feeling up to the task of going to the buffet made her smile.

"That's the spirit, Hideki! I knew I could count on you. So that's you, me and Chisato. Mmm, how about you, Taira-san?"

"You, me and Hideki going to where?" Chisato said as if she had only been paying attention now.

Tomoyo waited on Ren's answer.

Mr. Taira's mouth curled up, smiling calmly as Tomoyo somewhat relented. "I'm sure you shall." It was hard to tell if he sounded a tad relieved or approving. His thoughts, meanwhile, thanked his wife for getting on his case often enough to try and have their relationship with their son be better. Granted, it had some ups and downs, and they knew for sure that a rift was starting to form when it was announced that they would be moving away from Naha.

It would be alright. In time, Ren would tell them what he was up to.

Ren, meanwhile, was caught off-guard and off-balance at the random invite of a lunch invitation by a person he just met. "Wait, uh, teppanyaki? A buffet?" He sounded unsure, and it seemed like he was going to say no. But then, images danced across his mind- oceans of fruit juice. Mountains of pork. Literally rolling hills of spices and rice.

"An invitation, huh?" A woman with a suppressed Okinawan accent said.

Mrs. Taira appeared, resemblance to her son obvious. Pushing a cart filled with groceries from all the food groups but containing a bit more diet soda than normal, along with pork-flavored seasoning. A DVD was also in the cart, front facing upward. The visage of Toshiro Mifune was upon it clashing with a younger man, along with the names of other actors, the director (Akira Kurosawa), and the title in fanciful kanji: Raidou Kuzunoha.

"Hm, nice as that sounds, that's probably going to be no for now. What did I miss besides coffee?" Accent so thick it was unintelligible, she turned to look at Ren and her husband.

Mr. Taira responded first, looking relieved as his voice came out a mishmash of Hokkaido and Okinawa. "You didn't miss anything, dear. Ren just ran into two people his age, one thing led to another, and now it seems you finished without us." Some surprise was on his face.

Mrs. Taira held a shit-eating grin on her face as she spoke up again. "I have my moments." She then turned to Ren, expectations obvious on her face. "Mind introducing me to your new friends, Ren?"

"Ah, yhehs!" Ren stated quickly, Okinawan accent thick. He had froze a bit in surprise at his mother finding him and finishing the hunt for groceries while he and his father had been caught in conversation. Nevertheless, when he said his next sentance, he had moved over to Tokyo-ban, and sounded much clearer. "Everyone, this is my mother. Mom, these people are students at Taiyoutono High School. They're Hideki Tachibana, Tomoyo Sonozaki, and... forgive me Chisato-san, but... I don't think I heard your surname?" Ren ended awkwardly. His parents looked at him with approval, though Ren was a tad preoccupied to notice.
