Piercing cold, like ice, clung to Haru's back as they cowered underneath the desk. The room was musty and dark, but Haru's eyes were beginning to adjust to the visibility level even in the midst of terror. Toppled chairs and cluttered debris were all that stood between them and the door. The footsteps were getting closer and closer, and Haru curled up tightly, shivering. They glanced up once, peeking an eye out to check the door, and the top of their head bumped against the bottom of the desk. Haru sucked in a sharp breath and ducked their head down again. The door opened and Haru froze. They tried to stop moving but their shoulders wouldn't stop shaking and when they looked up, the first thing they saw was a steel pipe coming through the door. They bit their bottom lip, hard, to stifle a scream and tried to remain stock still. The voice was familiar, and getting closer and closer, and Haru stopped breathing as --- It was a slow day in the Taiyoutono Library - barely anyone had come in, and those who had were keeping to themselves. Haru's shift had ended just over an hour ago, but they had decided to stay and do some light reading before going home. They found their favorite table (in the corner, next to the water fountain but away from the window) and sat down with a book about Greek Mythology, thumbing through it with quiet interest. It hadn't taken very long for them to fall asleep. A few of Haru's coworkers had already commented that they looked tired, but Haru didn't realize just how exhausted they were until they were crossing their arms over the open pages of the book and resting their head in their elbows, eyes starting to flutter asleep. This isn't good for the book, they thought dully to themselves before drifting off. They'd been asleep for almost half an hour now. It didn't appear to be a restful sleep, either; they were frowning, tense, their expression contorted as they turned their head to the side, mumbling to themselves, "No..." |

For the past five or so minutes, Trent Proctor had been rendered immobile as he stared at Haru sleep. He was certain that it wasn't very healthy to do that, much less over an open book, sitting down in that position... and they didn't seem to be getting a lot of rest at all. The young man had felt tempted to wake them up - if only to get them to sleep not on top of an open book - but he hadn't actually taken any action. Not just because of the sheer force of his awkwardness - also because a guy dressed in all black like him approaching someone as young looking as Haru would certainly lead to some strong misinterpretations. ...well, this part of the library's pretty secluded so I don't think anyone's gonna notice--oh god that makes it sound worse Finally mustering up some courage, he approached and tapped them on the shoulder. "...Amachi-san?" |

Everything would go wrong for Trent as Haru yelped, loudly, when he tapped them on the shoulder, waking up with a start. Their gaze turned just a fraction to see the black-clothed figure standing next to them, and they immediately recoiled, jerking to the side and accidentally knocking over their chair, falling to the floor along with it. At some point, mid-air, Haru regained consciousness of where they were, and it occurred to them that they probably weren't about to die. They landed on their side and immediately scrambled up into a sitting position... promptly smacking their head underneath a table, eliciting another yelp. They winced, leaning forward and rubbing the back of their head. "Ow, ow, ow, ow..." They glanced up at Trent sheepishly. "Proocter-san! It's cool! Everything's cool. I'm, uh, I'm fine. Whoops." |

That couldn't possibly have gone worse. If that hadn't drawn a few glances, he had no idea what could. "...you just fell off a chair then hit your head against the table... somehow. That's... not fine." While looking at the book on the table, he stretched his hand out to help Haru up. "...mythology, huh... does this have to do with what happened the other day?" He lowered his voice. "You know what I'm talking about." |

Haru pulled their hand away from the back of their head, looking it over. "Well, I'm not bleeding, so it's probably fine. Yeah." They looked over to see Trent's extended hand, and gratefully accepted Trent's help up. "Thanks," they said, wearing a sunny smile. Trent looked at the book and lowered his voice, and Haru, still dazed, took a moment to decipher what he was talking about. "Huh?" They looked from Trent down to the book, then back to Trent. "Uh... oh! Yeah, the uh... the yeah." They hesitated, fidgeting with their fingers, gripping their right wrist. "Thanks again," they said quietly. "I... don't know what would have happened if you Wakabayashi-san hadn't been there..." |

"...the yeah." His eyes narrowed slightly. He didn't want to admit that it was pretty adorable when Haru did that. "I don't want to think about it either." He looked off to the side as he said that. A few seconds passed and he sat down at the table. "...I don't know if it's entirely safe for us to talk about this so out in the open so you'll have to keep your voice down. You... got any questions about that?" He knew that he himself was full of many questions after his own awakening, and the uncertainty was rather terrifying. |

Haru sat down when Trent did, closing up the book and pushing it aside - they'd harassed that book enough for one day. They smiled and said, "Well, it didn't happen, so you don't have to think about it!" Honestly, Haru was trying not to think too hard about it either. Not only could they have gotten hurt, but Suki... Trent asked if they had any questions, and Haru nodded their head. "Uh... yeah, probably. Let me think for a second..." It wasn't that they didn't know what to ask, it was that there were just so many questions buzzing around in their mind that they didn't know what to ask first. "So... what happened?" They asked, starting out with the biggest question. "I did some reading on that website thing, but I..." Haru shook their head. "It's all so crazy. Can you spell it out for me so I know I'm not losing it or something?" |

The young man scratched the back of his head upon receiving the question. "...you couldn't possibly have asked a broader thing." He took a deep breath before he attempted explaining. "Basically... at some point, both you and your sister saw a golden butterfly, though you might not remember this. When someone sees the butterfly they are apparently entranced and they mindlessly follow it into the Ruins - that big place you were in." He ran a hand through his hair. "At some point you're left unconscious and some time later you wake up with no recollection of how you got there... are you following so far?" |

"Wow, Practer-san, don't talk about yourself that way," Haru immediately replied. They attempted to look seriously concerned, as if Trent had really put himself down, but their lips twitched in an obvious sign of stifled laughter. Putting the jokes aside, they nodded slowly, listening to Trent's explanation. "I, uh, yeah. That reads, so far. I kind of remember the butterfly? Everything's kind of fuzzy..." They scratched their head. "How'd I get there, though?" |

The full implications of the joke Haru made didn't dawn on Trent until a full second after he'd noticed they were stifling laughter (period of time during which he just stared at the small person, dumbfounded). Once it did, however, he couldn't help thinking about Hiro. He blushed and looked off to the side before clearing his throat. "...you either walked or ran there. No other options." He took a deep breath. "...I know that sounds weird but it's the truth. Once you're entranced you lose control of your body and mind and you just follow the butterfly on foot. Once there, well..." He let out a small sigh. How could he explain the next part? |
