Robespierre Did Nothing Wrong
|
Name: Akio Ryuugamine Gender: Male Age: 16 Class: 1-2 Clubs/Occupation: Kendo, Gardening Personality: The son of an upstanding criminal lawyer would naturally be expected to be a moral and industrious citizen. Akio fulfils those clichés and more. If he were to catch you tripping and scratching your knee, he would hold out his hand with a perfect smile on his face, the sun at his back casting a halo round him. He would then go on to wave away your thanks with a gentle “Think nothing of it”, before turning around… and, still smiling, walk right into a telephone pole. Such an incident can provide a good view into Akio’s personality. On the one hand, he is a model of good behaviour: he is responsible, participates in class and takes notes diligently, works hard to keep himself in good shape, and adheres to the dress code, though not to a degree where he comes off as stodgy or anal-retentive. In dealing with others, he is rather casual and not a bit self-deprecating. On the other hand, Akio could also be called a “complete dork”. He practically wears his heart on his sleeve: when caught up in the moment, he gestures theatrically and uses rather overwrought language. He speaks fast and stumbles over his words when embarrassed. He responds to attention from either sex with a smile and a witty retort, though he himself will admit he hasn’t quite found “the one for him”. In truth, the idea of being close to someone makes him tense up. People would think that someone like Akio, who has wits, looks, and charm, is just too good to be true. In a way, it is: sometimes, he tends to come off as trying too hard. The question most would ask is: why would he have to? Only when a joke goes too far or a sensitive subject comes up and they see the cold glint of disapproval in his eyes do they understand the bitter truth: Akio, for as long as he can remember, has been trying—and in his eyes, failing—to be a good person. The front Akio puts up, all smiles and lovable awkwardness, is a safety valve. While it would be absurd to say that it’s a completely fabricated personality, Akio has consciously cultivated this part of him, hoping that it might become real. This is because ever since childhood, Akio has had trouble with drastic mood swings, the triggers of which are rather unpredictable. He can go from being gentle and caring to feckless and witty, with a quip for everything. He can then become obsessively focused on his current goals, swing into grandiose zeal, and finally move into deep, unrelenting self-hatred and suicidal ideation— or overwhelming rage. Depression puts him into a sullen and reclusive state, where any attempt at consoling him drives him even deeper into self-loathing. On the other hand, in his rages he has no compunctions about hurling insults (and objects) at people. Even when he's not tossed wildly about by his moods, Akio has a very bad habit of putting some people up on a pedestal and demonizing others. With some people, he alternates between idolizing them and finding the smallest fault in them to justify his hate (and then apologizing profusely when he comes to his senses). Akio holds the virtue of justice in high esteem… perhaps a little too highly. His experiences as a child bullied for his interests and sexuality, as well as the inequality, bigotry and corruption he sees in the world, have fanned the flames of his anger to the point where is a little too quick to write off people who do “evil” as irredeemable, regardless of how sorry they are or how much they try to atone. The worst in his eyes are those who hold authority and abuse it: for them, there can be no forgiveness, no attempts at understanding or redemption. Even bystanders can become guilty in Akio’s eyes, for his definition of evil includes standing by and doing nothing when you could have helped. This leads him to a mistrust of authority and a willingness to go above it in the pursuit of what he believes is right: if they, who have so much power, cannot or will not use it to make a better world (or even just a better community), then he will. No matter what lines he has to cross. There are times when Akio wants to lash out violently, to hurt the people who are unrepentant in ruining lives and making the world a worse place to live in. But those impulses are bad, and they make him bad, so he pushes them down and tries to forget about the violent fantasies and the rage that, at some level, he enjoys. Needless to say, this bleak hateful view of the world is not healthy at all. Especially when the holder of that view has the power to fire bursts of nuclear energy. History: The Ryuugamine family has a history of brilliant individuals with forceful personalities, mercurial moods, and a penchant for rebellion; a tendency they traced all the way back to an ancestor who died fighting for General Saigo. The latest member of that illustrious line, Tetsuo Ryuugamine, was a lawyer who earned the moniker of “the Iron Dragon” for his outstanding conviction record and reputation for relentlessly pursuing convictions regardless of whether the defendants were rich civilians, Yakuza, or government officials. This unwavering pursuit of justice, however, had him constantly moving because the cases he took sometimes brought him far from Nagasaki… and occasionally because someone he mouthed off to someone important. His inflexible sense of morality and his moodiness didn’t endear him much either. It was little surprise when Tetsuo, against the wishes of his family, married a foreigner; Natalia Koroleva, middle child to a family of Russian pro-democracy activists who had lived in Japan since the 80s. The result of this unusual pairing was a son, Akio. From a young age, the two sought to guide their child towards what they believed was right. Tetsuo tried to teach Akio the value of justice and giving people what they deserved, while Natalia believed that some authority was not worth bowing to. There was one lesson the two agreed on, though: they both believed that what society said was good could not and should not stand in the way of doing the right thing. This last lesson was the one that truly resonated with Akio. Even at a tender age, Akio showed signs of social consciousness: he stood up for his classmates when they were bullied and grew emotional over the scandals in the newspapers and on TV, expressing his concerns about issues like global warming and civil liberties: though they were half-formed and more about how scared the news made him, his parents could see that Akio was shaping up to be a socially aware and sensitive boy. However, Akio's unabashed expression of his feminine side and Appearance: Akio stands at about 5 foot 5, and weighs around 127 pounds. His ash-blond hair falls to his shoulders in an artfully messy tangle, with bangs falling over one of his big brown eyes. He has a full-lipped mouth that seems to be made for kisses and easy smiles. Underneath the eye not hidden by his bangs is a small beauty mark. Akio has a lean and toned physique, acquired from years of ballet. Out of uniform, he accentuates this with low-cut jeans and colourful hooded jackets worn over T-shirts. Current Weapon/Combat Skill: [How does your character fight, if at all? I know this is still a WIP but there's a few things I'd bring to focus now, before they have to be addressed in a more onerous way later. "Ryuugamine" is a name that apparently only exists in DRR. Most Prosecutors in Japan have what would be defined as 'outstanding' conviction records. Until relatively recently the courts have had a strong bias towards prosecution. But the biggest thing here is I'm no fan of a rehash of an existing character. Particularly that there's nothing that really stands out for this character as opposed to Kuzuki other than a few shades of Istuki here or there. |
