Yes… I’d sell the souls of all humanity to the devil if I thought it’d get us a happy ending.

"There you are, alright. That was your friend, so we're going to have you put some more work into this one that usual. Got these two steel rods here, they'll be the blades. Same way as usual though, you hold 'em, I hit them-" Noriko tilted her head slightly as she spotted Hideki walking in with a less than normal look about him. If there was one thing that she knew about her annoyingly-hired co-worker, it was that he he was still chipper no matter the time of day. Now he was looking downright despondent This isn't going to help anything if he's not thinking straight... Ugh. Noriko let out a tired sigh as she turned the fire down on the kiln, and crossed her arms. "Alright, start talking Tachibana. What happened to get you into this funk now? Did Proctor make fun of your favorite movie or something? Tell you that video games are better? I can't think of anything else that'd put you into a funk like this?" Yet at the same time, they really didn't have the time to spend not working either... |

As Noriko started stating his orders, Hideki merely walked to where the tools were to begin their job. However, about halfway through, Noriko stopped her orders and looked at him in a confused manner, something that Hideki almost imitated. "Almost", because his worried look still remained in his face. And then she began asking for a reason why he looked so down, something which made his mouth turn into a wavy line. Did she really now realize what would have happened if someone he knew came around and saw him wearing the apron he was wearing? "Well... Trent-san took some pictures of me wearing... This, and now he's gonna post them on Bedlam! And now everyone will look at them and make fun of me." It was incredible how this person, who was two years away from becoming an adult, was explaining his concern in the same way a child would. But even if Noriko may not understand it, this worry was more genuine than she would think. Despite the occasional person, and the fact that he has made silly jokes in person and in Bedlam, Hideki was worried that this would just make him regress back to what he was when he was back in Osaka, the guy everyone pushed around when they needed to let out steam. He finally had respect, and now he was afraid of losing it. |

She listened to what Hideki had to say concerning his behavior, but Noriko still... couldn't exactly connect with what the fuss was all about. Yes, he was clearly upset from the whole 'having his picture taken' situation, but that was just it. A few pictures on a site just for Persona Users didn't seem like the end of the world for her. But maybe, as she was starting to realize, perhaps that wasn't the best way to approach the issue. Of course it didn't concern her, because she wasn't involved. Still... Noriko crossed her arms as she looked at Hideki. "...And? You're going to let a few jokes on that sight get you this worked up? C'mon Tachibana. You can't let a bunch of words affect you like that." She then moved to pick up her tools once more and resume working, considering the discussion finished. "Besides, the population on Bedlam isn't too dense when compared to Nagashima. Most of our customers here aren't going to be Persona users anyway, so it's not like you'll be running into a lot either. Just let it go." |

Of course, Noriko being Noriko, she gave him her brand of advice, which amounted to just getting over it. Despite her best effort to aid him, Hideki made a small pout, not satisfied with her words. Sure, she made him wear this ridiculous apron, and now he's being told to just suck it up? He felt it was unfair. "But Noriko-san, it's not just about the jokes. When people see me wearing... This." He started, as he tugged the apron in question. "People are not going to take me seriously, they'd just always remember I wore this, and won't have respect for me." One could say that that was a slight exaggeration, as there were other people that went through more embarassing situations and still are taken seriously, but this mostly came from Hideki's own fears. And then, she remarked how essencially even people that weren't from Bedlam were going to see him wearing such an outfit, and went ahead to get her tools. The combination making Hideki looking a bit grouchy. "I don't want things to be like back home..." He murmured, as he looked to a side, unsure why he just let that out. Probably out of frustruation. |

"No one could be taken seriously in that" Noriko said nonchalantly. "One of the reasons why I was ticked off that my mother made it in the first place. It's like she thinks I'm still five years old or something, hmph..." She hadn't given Hideki the apron to wear out of any kind of petty dislike of him, at least. It was just an extra smithing apron they had lying around, save the shop a little money instead of buying a new one and everything. "Shouldn't judge just by looks alone anyway. Workplace safety is nothing to laugh about, so it's their fault their sense of humor is garbage." "The respect of someone like that's probably not worth anything in the first place. What you want is the respect of people that you respect. Then you know that you've done something right." Hideki didn't seem to be getting any less frustrated the more she talked, however. That in itself was a bit annoying, but for a slightly different reason. Hearing him continue to bemoan the possibility of being made fun of online, Noriko dropper her tools on the table and walked around to look Hideki right in the eyes. "Listen to me right now, Tachibana. What those people think and say? Forget them. You know who the only person's opinion you need to worry about is? Your own." Her brow was furrowed intensely as she look and spoke directly to Hideki, not breaking eye contact. "If you don't respect yourself enough, then everything you do is lacking a purpose" she seemed to be speaking to him from a place of personal experience as well, because she usually didn't make eye contact with him for this long either. "They can think what they want, I bet none of those people you're worried about has a job. Probably just students with nothing better to do than make fun of someone who's got one and just so happens to wear a stupid apron." Noriko crossed her arms in front of Hideki and looked at him sternly. "So are you going to let someone else control your life, or are you going to take charge of it, Tachibana?" |

At first, Noriko seemingly made an agreeing comment about how his new apron was apparently the root of his situation, which was at least good, even if Hideki still didn't feel right with her just dumping the attire on him. However, when he saw that Noriko placed her tools away and began walking towards him, his face went from despondent to one of concern and fear, the same kind of look a child would give to his mother when she sees that they indeed broke the expensive vase, and she didn't look pleased at all with his reckless disregard for her fine china. What was she going to do? Yell at him? Give her a smack to make him stop whinning? He wasn't sure, but the constant wave of emotions he felt caused him to relunctantly look at Noriko's scary eyes, all while his own eyes began to moist slightly. But she didn't do any of that. Instead, she spoke ot him, ehe words she used being about how he needed to have self-respect above all, and how he shouldn't worry about what others think. It was easy for her to say, considering how she seemed to spent her entire life understanding that working hard is the way to go. He didn't know if she had any hardships she had to deal in life, but he felt she didn't go through what he did. She probably didn't ruin someone's life to the point they died, thanks to her. She probably didn't kill someone. However, there was something else she said, "everything you do is lacking a purpose". His mouth quivered a bit as she said that, as if he wanted to say something in return. He didn't agree with her, because he knew that there were many thing she did with purpose. "..." Or did he? "BOY, ARE YOU REALLY DOUBTING YOURSELF ON THIS?" Agni said, his voice carrying a tone of offense. Hideki really didn't want to have an argument with both Agni and Noriko, so all he could do is think over what he was about to say, before falling towards more self-depreciation-induced thoughts. He was right a moment ago, he knew many things he did were done with purpose. Why did he ask to be hired in Kaneshiro Metalworks? Part of it was related to economy, but another part of it was also to help the disgruntled and grumpy Noriko in her work, and try to make her less angry. Was it a foolish reason? Well, it kinda was, but it was also the same reason why he helped Miharu after their lastest Ruins expedition. It was why he helped Mayu and Amanda with the cat situation. It was why he tried to prevent Gwyn from blowing up in front of Asuka. It was why he went down to the Ruins, because he wished to help others. That was his purpose. But... Was he helping them for selfless reasons? Or selfish reasons? He coudn't deny that he was taught the values of selflessness and goodwill growing up, but at the same time, he couldn't deny that Noriko's own words were putting in the spotlight the fact that him pushing his ideals were probably a product of his own self-depreciating views, especially when it came to the Ruins. He briefly wondered, would he have accepted to subject himself to such a danger for others, have his life taken a different turn? Was he some sort of death-seeker, without even realizing it? This was definitely a heavy topic to dwell on, but the last question Noriko gave him served to get a better grip on his throughts. The very thing he thought of was the latter option, and it came right after Noriko made the question. Could this be some sort of sign? Perhaps he didn't hate himself enough to completely surrender his agency and sense of self to something that isn't 'himself'? "..." He wasn't sure about that. But he already had an answer, wasn't that enough? "I..." He started, still looking unsure, before he shook his head, and looked at Noriko again, this time looking a bit more determined. "No! I want it to be mine!" His voice was charged with emotion, causing it to rise in volume a bit, to which he caught himself and said a small apology. "Anyhow... Thanks for that, Noriko-san. I guess I got carried away, heh." Even if his chuckle was a nervous one, he still meant every word he said. And with that, his expression returned to a more determiend one. "Alright, what needs to be done to make Trent-san's order? Tell me and I'll do it!" Whether it was benevolence or redemption, there was one thing that didn't change: He had a job to do, and he was aiming to make some good knives. |

It seemed like what Noriko said finally managed to get through Hideki's head. After she had finished her own bit of lecturing, the boy seemed to be deep in thought for quite a while. She watched him for a few seconds before deciding the rest was up to him and walking back to her tools in preparation for getting Trent's trench knives made. Hmph, I don't get paid to babysit anyone here, why do I even bother with it? Tachibana's got something going on in that head of his, and I'm not going to sit here and be a therapist for him, let alone anyone. The only way we deal with this stuff is by relying on ourselves... There were the beginnings of a frown on her face at that thought, but she masked it rather rather quickly, especially with her back turned to Hideki. However, his sudden outburst behind her got Noriko to turn around and see that the young man seemingly found some sort of peace or... something. Who could tell when it came to him, really? "Mmm, good decision. If you stood there any longer I'd send you home. Got no time for slackers in this forge, but you know that already don't you?" She looked at Hideki briefly. He certainly had... reached something for sure. The hesitation in his eyes and voice were replaced by some sort of confidence that wasn't there previously. Well... Good. About time he got ready to pull his weight around here. She moved to turn the furnace back on and let the roaring flames fill the air of the forge once again. It was time to work. "Once those flames get back up, stick those steel rods in. Going to try and get both worked on at once to make it go more evenly here and..." They both had work to do. And they were both going to do it, together. |
