The Nagashima riverbank was always scarce in terms of visitors, at least at that time of the day - dusk. Most working people were stuck in rush hour, most students were eager to return to their homes to do their homework and rest... Why would they bother with nature during a weekday? Well, that wasn't how Sanae Miyamoto saw things. Not at all. There she was, legs dangling off a small rock by the coast, using her recently bought fishing rod for the second time. The first time had been in a picnic with the Fishing Club in that same area - and how fun it was! It cemented her decision to stay in the club. But to be entirely honest, her debut in the hobby had been quite embarrassing. She didn't know a thing about fishing. She spent the rest of the week studying the various terms and techniques, wanting to excel at it, and... ...Well, there she was, for the last thirty minutes, with no bite. "Maybe you should cast it again? I'unno how that works." Sanae looked behind her shoulder, spotting one Asuka Harada lying down under the shade of a tree very near her current location. The two sometimes hung out together in the riverbank, their personalities meshing well. They quickly became friends - one would thing that the contrast between points of view would make them clash, but instead it made them have a rather nice chemistry with one another. "You think so?" With a wry smile, Sanae glanced back at the line. The fly of the line was deep underwater, mostly unmoving if not for the water current. "Just a little while longer should do it..." "That's what you said like fifteen minutes ago. But yeah, suit yourself." After a hand wave, the Taiyoutono freshman placed the same hand under her head, serving as a pillow along with the other one. "So... How are you getting along with Reitaku? Fun place?" "Yeah!" She grinned despite Asuka being unable to see it from her position. "People there are very nice. I thought the opposite given their reputation... I'm pleasantly surprised!" She couldn't help but having actually been afraid of that school, just a little bit. She never heard good things... "Good to know. By the way..." Asuka opened an eye, glancing at her friend. "...Have you met some dude named Yuki Harada by any chance?" Of course, her topic had a second intention. She wondered how he was doing. Her grounding had gotten that much worse recently and she barely even made it out of her parents' control plan that day... "Harada...? Like you? Are you two related?" She looked over her shoulder and obtained a nod for a response. "I'm afraid not, but I'll make sure to find him if you w--" "--Hook." "Eh?" "HOOK!" Asuka bolted to a sitting position, pointing straight at the fishing rod. Sanae's gaze landed on it to find that her rod was struggling with something underwater... and noticing she was nearly falling as well, not having realized the situation quickly enough. "AAAAAAAH!" She nearly tumbled forth to the water, but felt a grip from behind with an arm, and a hand securing her rod. It seemed Asuka sprung to action to help her friend, trying to pull both backwards with all her might. Good god, what had Sanae caught, a one ton weight?! "Hang... in... there...!" She yelled through gritted teeth as the two did their best to pull the line back up. |

In the distance, one would be able to hear a whistle coming from a young boy. Said young boy was carrying a backpack, and a set of casual clothing, as he walked close to the riverbank. Indeed, this was a rare time for Hideki, as not only he didn't have Drama Club activities, it wasn't his work hours as well. And given how he was once again pushed to go outside and catch some fresh air, he thought he could try to do some homework, to start the new year properly. He was thinking of maybe going to the park, but then something got his attention on his way there. Hearing a familiar voice, he turned his head and noticed that Asuka was close! And... What was that thing on her arm? "I looks like an armband, isn't that... Wait!" It was a class rep armband! Oh man, Gwyn was going to be livid. And also, she was talking to someone else? This someone else being another girl, fishing at the riverbank. Hideki blinked for a moment as he looked at her, she looked kinda cute, but then he quickly shook the thoughts away. He couldn't think of something like that, he rediscovered Mari after not seeing her in weeks! But then he snapped out of his thoughts when Asuka yelled something. Looking at the girls again, he saw that the strange girl caught something, and it was fighting back! "Oh crap!" He thought to himself as he saw that Asuka alone wasn't able to help the girl. He had to do something! "Hey! Asuka-san!" He yelled as he ran towards the two as fast as he could, grabbing an available piece of the fishing rod's handle, and pulling alongside them. "I'm here to help, don't worry!" |

Like a curtain, dusk had opaqued what had otherwise been a sunny day in Nagashima; the day had proven peaceful, and with only a couple of window-shoppers coming into the Adyton throughout the entire day, Ryou was let-off early. After the initial rush of customers that accompanied the start of the school year, things had seemed to settle to a lull, with only regulars coming in for a brief levity and perhaps some munchies to accompany their coffee; today we saw not even that, as seemingly foot-traffic to the store had been redirected to some other place beyond human perception, the complete silence enveloped the one within the store, as it was only Ryou along with the owner for most of his shift. It was a strange sort of peace that wasn't entirely lost on Ryou, though if this trend was to continue, he didn't see many paychecks in his future, should he continue working for Bookstore Adyton. Pleasant though it was, this placid illusion of silence would not in fact last forever, and it was Ishikawa-san who broke the silence, "I think that'll be all for today, Arakawa-kun." Ryou hesitated a little, saying something or other about needing to re-do the fiction section, but Ishikawa-san would have none of it, not that he wasn't opposed to leaving, but he didn't wish to seem too eager about it before his employer. Ryou thanked the owner, before heading off. He was greeted with an oddly tranquil sight, it was only a couple of minutes to 5 and yet there were no 9-5ers on the streets; he took this as a small blessing as he moved towards the riverbank. Only the sound of rushing water greeted him, as he followed the river's course. Pleasing as these silent reveries were, they wouldn't last forever, and breaking through this peaceful veneer, came reality loudly, and surreptitiously as only it knew. Though the site of fishers along the bank was not uncommon, it was another thing to see a group of highschoolers, huddled together as they pulled jointly on a fishing rod. A look of annoyance washed over Ryou's face, as he came to realize that he'd need to step through the group's general vicinity in order to get going, It doesn't concern you, he vocalized as he made a conscious effort to slip-by unnoticed by the group. Only a couple of steps and he'd be outside of their general vicinity, and yet.... something nagged at him. Something about how the two girls held together to pull their catch bothered him. They were still being dragged down by the sheer weight of whatever was on the line, even if they pulled together; he took a moment to observe the situation, and his annoyed look became one of bemusement as he figured out what was bugging him. They'd be pulled along with their catch if they didn't shift their position. "Oi! Plant your feet and use'em like a wedge, and keep a low center of gravity!" in spite of the change in pitch, his delivery remained perfectly monotone, but that was less a conscious decision by his part and more to do with a lifetime of maintaining his speech pattern; he began to wonder if they'd actually caught a fish, or if the line had instead snagged something like a tire, he wouldn't know as he hadn't fished around these parts before. "Don't let go, Sanae!" Asuka barked the order as she pulled both said girl and the rod as far back as she physically could - which wasn't that much at all given the extreme amount of resistance they were fighting against. "Reel it in!" "R-Right!" The Reitaku student quickly grabbed the reeling handle, quickly spinning it; a few seconds later, she found an intense amount of resistance again. "Ngh...!" Both girls failed to notice the line wasn't moving much in the surface of the water, instead just being stretched almost to beyond its capacity. Asuka reflexively looked over her shoulder once feeling a set of arms she didn't expect around herself, noticing the one guy she had dubbed 'the pushover'. At least his nose looked okay. She hadn't heard him calling out, such was the effort she was placing onto the whole thing; though she did notice that no matter how much Hideki aided them in their quest, the resistance didn't seem to let up in the slightest. "C'mon, you fucker...!" She spoke through gritted teeth, and both girls grew red in the face from the exertion. "The hell are we catching, a whale?!" Unbelievable. Nevertheless, once Ryou spoke up to them, Asuka instinctively obeyed - not like she could come up with a better solution herself at that point in time. She also leaned back a little towards Hideki for support. Sanae, however, didn't have time to apply this technique herself. Instead, a loud snap was heard by the four of them. What followed was Sanae falling backwards onto Asuka, and Asuka onto Hideki at full force, in a domino effect. The line had snapped. |

It turned out that, not matter how hard he pulled, whatever Sanae caught was just way too strong for them. "C-Crap, what is this thing??" He said in between grunts as he did his best during the situation. But then, the voice of someone else was heard, and Hideki turned to let out a noise of confusion. However, before he could make sense of what the stranger said, a snap was heard that startled him. "Waaah!" What followed next, was him being propelled backwards, not just because of the force they were applying, but also due to Sanae and Asuka being pushed back by it, making the girls fall on top of him. On second thought, maybe in Asuka's case, this could be considered payback, given how he fell on top of her and Gwyn last time. Letting out a yelp as body was squashed by both of them, Hideki groaned weakly, as his eyes merely looked to the sky, stunned by the impact. "Uuugh... You two alright?" It was all he could muster. Good thing he wasn't weak to force. |

Unfortunate... he grimaced as he moved slowly towards the trio of students currently dog-piled near the riverbank, his gaze sweeping the ground as he took in the sight of the three students. He thought one of them looked familiar, but couldn't place them at the time, as he looked over their position he mustered up the courage to engage them, something seemed to reply within him but when actually trying to say something he came back empty-handed; settling with helping up one of the two female students, he offered his hand as he settled into a half-crouch beside them. Oh great, I'm sure they'll be so thankful after your excellent advice landed them in this position., Attempting to brush away his usual internal monologue, he pushed through his usual apathetic self, the results were less than stellar "Pulling as you were earlier, some lost footing would've sent you flying towards the bank." Well, at least you didn't insult them for an introduction, so overall a D for effort. Taking appraisal of the whole situation, it seemed odd to him that people of/around his age would indulge in this sort of pastime, were he a more sociable person he may have even dared to ask what they hoped to accomp-I mean- if this was a pastime of theirs, or perhaps part of some club activity, but any attempts to establish a sort of rapport all came back with a dialog window expressing some failure to motivate. "Shame about the line, -ah- you ok?" he finally expressed, as his mind did mental gymnastics to catch up with what was currently transpiring. |

Both Sanae's and Asuka's bodies impacted against Hideki's, whom predictably fell over from the force. Unfortunately for Asuka she was smack dab in the middle; her body was sandwiched by both. Not that Sanae was heavy, but her muscles were deceptively compact. She couldn't help a groan in pain as her body was compressed below its needed size between the two. "Ngh..." Fortunately, the Reitaku student rolled off of her almost immediately after the fall. She, too, was in pain - her arms and legs were aching from the earlier effort (and so were Asuka's, whom was too busy trying to breathe to notice). In her hand was the now useless fishing rod. While in otherwise perfect condition-- That's not perfect, dear. That's not close to perfect. It's seen better days. --the line had been broken and she needed a replacement for both that and the hook. That would come straight out of her pocket! She sat on her knees, letting the cool grass tickle her skin as she surveyed the severed fishing line. "...So much for fishing today..." She muttered in defeat. In the meantime, Asuka had gripped Ryou's hand to help herself up and free Hideki of his plight. "Thanks." Straightening her clothes once her body adjusted to freedom, she noticed Sanae being in a not-so-good mood: a first. She made a point to get her something better since she could afford it. Maybe they'd talk about it later, she knew the girl saw money-related matters as a very delicate topic. "I'm fine... sorta." Taking a page out of Ryou's book, she decided to help Mr. Pushover back to his feet; when she glanced at Sanae again, she noticed the sadness had been replaced with determination and slight... cheerfulness? "I'm sorry about that." Sanae smiled apologetically at the group. "It looks like I need to work harder..." "Or maybe you need to stop trying to fish out five ton weights or something." |

Eventually, a swift in weight would cause Hideki to recover from his stunned state, as Sanae got off the small pile of teenagers, followed by Asuka, who did so thanks to the stranger's help. He moved his arms to elevate his body a bit, and saw that she offered her hand to help him get up, and after being smacked by two heavy bodies, he certainly needed it. "Thanks..." He said, as he grabbed her hand and got up, his hands gently rubbing his body as he felt the sting of the impact, plus the slight tiredness of his arms. Sanae then proceeded to apologize to everyone, as he looked at her with a confused look on his face. "What even was that thing? I doubt a fish that strong would just swim around here." Of course, he had no knowledge about fishes, so he could be wrong. Or, maybe the line got accidentally hooked to a heavy object? |

"I wouldn't know, but it seemed to me the line wasn't moving." he answered, debating whether or not to clarify what he meant by 'not moving', but decided not to as something held him back at that moment, sort of a sentry or watchdog in his mind keeping him in check. He brushed off any thoughts of mental dialog and turned to face the fishing rod, approaching -and by extension- the overlook on the riverbank. As though an arm coming to a rest on the small of his back, Ryou felt a small bit of force pushing him onward, as he came to look upon that rippling mirror of the dusky sky. He saw the sign of a star dotting the relative stillness in that pool of rushing water, and saw it long-expose into a comet-tail. Mesmerized for a moment, a strange sort of melancholy began to well in him, but from where it sprung he couldn't tell. He steeled himself in his usual veneer of bemusement as he walked back to the trio of students, somewhat regaining his usual composure. "You should probably start carrying a pocket knife to cut your line with, better to lose a line than have to take a bus with your clothes all drenched." he expressed in an as-a-matter-of-factly tone before deigning to walk past the trio of students. An odd feeling of discomfort washed over him as a wave and vanished as it rippled over him, as though something suppressed it as soon as it appeared. "Is fishing something locals do often around these parts?" he posited, albeit non-threateningly; as though his perception was colored with hints of genuine interest, and a form of humility normally attributed to newcomers to new places. Wait... we're engaging in conversation now?, asked his internal monologue as though the last couple of seconds had only juuust managed to render on its side of a faulty stream. |

"It's like you're a magnet for slapstick, every time I see you you end up getting hurt." Asuka commented as she brought Hideki back to his feet. Last time they met, Gwyn had elbowed him right in the nose (while trying to punch Asuka herself, no less) so despite the derogatory term she had named him after she couldn't help but feel bad over the boy. "Pretty sure it wasn't a fish." She eventually came to the conclusion as soon as Ryou mentioned the line wasn't moving. That's not really normal - even if there was a really heavy fish, it would've swum around against the current. That'd be enough to move it. Sanae, however, seemed to have moved on. "I promise I'll do better next time." The Reitaku student chimed in as a response to the boy's advice, straightening her uniform. Asuka shrugged to Ryou's question while Sanae attempted to answer. "Well, I don't know... I'm just fishing because I very recently joined Reitaku's Fishing Club. I want to know what I'm doing so I don't drag others down with me too much." She spoke with a smile despite the self demeaning statement. "You'll be fine. It's a damn school club, nobody takes that shit seriously anyway." She sure as heck didn't. "Asuka-san, you should! It's a great way to build a skill set and make friends!" "Yeah, yeah, whatever..." Said girl rolled her eyes and shook her head. Why did she even bother? |
