[uncomfortable whimpering]
|
"Why did you call for an ambulance?" The question made Kiku pause. She had been on her way back to the dorms as soon as school let out when her phone notified her of a call from Father. Kiku had barely managed to get a greeting out before her dad's question interrupted her. "U-Uh... I did wh-" "Do not 'uh' me, Kiku." His tone was stern, but not angry. "You are to address others with respect. That means not hesitating when others are asking questions.” She frowned at herself for her mistake. “Sorry. I… called for an ambulance when?” "Sunday. You dialed for an ambulance at 6:19 PM exactly, according to your phone logs. But I wasn't informed that you were injured.” A beat. “So why did you need one?” The girl kept on her path back to the dorm as she conversed, sticking to the sidewalk and using her free hand to grip the school bag that she had slung over her shoulder. “Oh. A friend of mine got hurt, so I thought it would be a good-” “And you didn't think to tell me about this?” He interrupted for a second time. “Something as important as calling emergency services?” Kiku replied quickly and frantically, suddenly feeling like she had done something wrong. “I-I just didn't think it was worth mentioning. I mean, nobody really got hurt, so I didn't think it was a big deal.” Of course her dad would want to know about this! Why wouldn't she say something? Stupid, stupid, she thought. There was silence on the other end for a long moment, and Kiku hadn't even noticed she’d stopped walking. Some of the other students heading home stepped around her immobilized form, muttering something about her to themselves. Father spoke back up again. “What happened to your friend?” “It turned out he had had a panic att-” “‘He'?” His tone was suddenly incredulous. “Your friend is a boy?” “H-He’s my senpai. I got lost on the way to the dorms one day, so he-” Kiku suddenly interrupted herself with a yelp, a larger student forcing himself past with a “Move it!” and a shove of his shoulder. Her arm slipped, the phone falling out of her grip and smacking onto the asphalt of the sidewalk. She scrambled to pick it back up, quickly falling onto her knees to grab the phone - and frowning at the damage, a noticeable crack now on the screen. A small, disappointed sigh was her reaction before she put it back up to her ear, now back in stride if only to avoid another pushy pedestrian. “Kiku? Kiku, what happened?” She was immediately greeted by near-panic from her dad. “I-I-I’m fine, Father! It's fine. I just dropped my phone. There's no need to worry.” Another moment of silence. “Alright.” A sigh. “We'll… talk about your friend later.” Did he sound annoyed, or was that her imagination? “Goodbye, Kiku.” Well that was a little sudden. “O-Oh! Bye, Fath…” Dial tone greeted her before she could finish. With a frown, she dumped the phone into her bag as she kept on her way. Why would he be so upset? Father being disappointed in her was the worst feeling in the world - Kiku couldn't even think of what the problem was. Was he that mad over the ambulance? She let out another sigh. |
