Toki plainly stared at that single message for what felt like forever that afternoon. His high school sweetheart - yes, the one that cheated on him a number of times - wanted to get together yet again. And as usual, he was gonna be a dumbass and fall right into the tr--

My boy. For as much as I'd love seeing you get destroyed by that wretched woman, I must say, good on you. Saying 'no' is a wonderful power to have these days. You're less of a weakling now. That makes things more fun.

"What's with the long face?" A friendly voice snapped him out of it. Toki had agreed to hang out with Akeno at the food court, and the two were drinking. Well, more like he was.

"You don't drink anymore?" He tried to change the subject. He had ordered a beer while Akeno stuck to a cup of coffee. That was highly unusual for her, considering their usual hang out spot was a bar.

"Eh. Don't want shit to hit the fan with the boyfriend, y'know. It's not like it'll kill me not to drink booze." She shrugged. Luck was not in Toki's side like always as Akeno decided to press on. "C'mon dude. I know normally your day's shit but you look like a special kind of down today. 'Sup?"

Not being able to put it into words, Toki decided to bring out his cellphone and pull up the message, sliding the gadget on the food court table in Akeno's direction. The latter picked the phone up and read the log. "Oh, wow. Damn." She knew that woman personally. Bad seed, she was.

Toki, in the meantime, buried his face in his hands. Why was this so hard for him?

Another day, another moment in which Hideki felt inclined to make the thread. After the talk he had with Miharu, he proposed to himself that he'd make a thread in Bedlam to find out the whereabouts of Mari, but even if he wishes to find out what happened to her, he didn't feel like bothering others over it. People would say he's being 'desperate' or 'clingy', and it definitely wouldn't help him feel better. But on top of that, the mere inactivity adding to hs rising doubts over what happened to her weren't making him feel better either. It was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, and needless to say, it caused him a good deal of distress to say the least.

To try to take his mind about it and pretent she was alright, Hideki took a walk around the city, which eventually landed him on the shopping center. As he walked close to the food court, a brief glance made him discover that there were familiar faces. And one of them seemed... Worried?

Now that was something to check out.

"... Uh, Toki?" He said, as he walked to see why he appeared in such distress. But then he realized it was rude to ignore the other person! "Ah, hey Akeno, is everything alright?"

Toki had his fingers spread just enough to peek between them, spotting Hideki. That was the kid he met in the Ruins, right? He seemed competent. He lowered said hands and sighed, waving him off. "Yeah, everything's fine, don't worry about it dude."

"Just senseless drama by some idiots. You know, Nagashima's bread and butter." Akeno followed up on it. "'Sup, man? Wanna sit here? We could use the company." Maybe having people around Toki would help him forget about the situation altogether. She returned the phone to its rightful owner and sipped her coffee afterwards.

Hideki's frown did not dissipate when Toki assured him that he was alright, but thankfully Akeno was willing to have him stick around. "Ah, sure! Actually, hold up just a bit." He said, before going to one specific certion of the food court. A moment later, he reemerged with a cup of cappuccino in hand. Might as well have a drink if he was gonna chat up with friends, right?

Taking a seat inbetween Akeno and Toki, Hideki took a sip before turning to her. "So, how have you been? I haven't seen you in a while."

"School's a bitch." Toki replied to Hideki's question before taking a sip of his beer. Akeno couldn't help but laugh at it, agreeing in full.

"On slightly better news," She decided to steer the conversation, lest it get too depressing. "I moved out of my dorm and into an apartment. It's more cozy that way and I don't get to hear my 'neighbors' fucking against my wall, so that's nice."

"What? They do that?" Toki raised an eyebrow, to which the woman nodded.

"Dude. It's a dorm. If you don't party hard you're doing it wrong." She wouldn't miss it. "How about you? 'Sup?"

Hideki snickered at Toki's direct answer. Already? Damn. Then again, he looked like a college student, so maybe he just had a different time frame for his studies than a high school. Or maybe he's not taking the start of the year pretty well? Who knows.

"Ah, I hope you didn't have any roommates, they'd probably miss you." Unless said roommate was a jerk. Or someone that is real. Of course, the remark she made made Hideki blush a bit, having to deal with such a thing would definitely get very awkward very fast, so he was glad she moved out.

But now it was his turn. "Well, I started school not too long ago, and it already got a bit intense, to say the least." He said, as he rubbed his nose before taking a sip of his drink. Thankfully the hit did not leave any marks, so no one would suspect he was elbowed by a 13 years old. He didn't want to bring down the talk with his issue, so instead he brought up a more familiar topic. "So, have you both heard all the stuff that's been happening in the Ruins?"

Akeno shook her head at the roommates remark. "Unless you can call Takeru a roommate, I was by myself. Fortunately." The idea of having to share her bedroom with someone she never met before in her life wasn't exactly something she was comfortable with. Plus, her boyfriend slept there every other day so it wasn't like she was alone either.

"You in Taiyoutono?" Toki asked out of curiosity. He had finished high school in a while, but he could still recall how crazy that place was.

"Eh, yeah, I've seen what happened." Akeno nodded. "But... I don't think I can be of much value to help, not yet anyway. Gotta get stronger, yadda yadda. What good would it do for me to join those explorations if I just end up potentially holding people back? You never know when some big bad might get the jump on you."

"I see your point..." Toki replied while nibbling on the tip of the beer bottle. "Hell, with my Persona, I'd rather not join at all... The fucker would probably go ballistic at the slightest thing."

For a moment, Hideki looked at Akeno confused as he took a sip from his drink. Who was this Takeru? Was it the same dude that came to pick her up when they had that excursion? He wasn't sure, but in any case, he hoped this person wasn't worried about her when she came back.

"Oh yeah, I'm a second year now! I have been around ever since I moved, which was a couple months ago. It's a tough place!" Indeed it was, which is why he felt a sense of pride being a second year student. Did he have what it takes to reach third year?

"Ah, I guess you are right, but hey, maybe there are still mysteries to find in the first floor. Any help we can offer will do us good." He said, completely ignoring the fact that him, an underleveled User, alongside other underleveled Users, participated in an expedition with Users of much higher caliber. Details.

"I do wonder if we'd be able to enter the No Man's Land again. What could be hiding there?"

"Kid, don't think like that." Akeno shook her head. "Feeling like you're helping is great 'n all, but you hafta consider you won't be of much help if you end up six feet under. Literally. If anything that'll be a burden."

Toki nodded slightly in agreement. It was the problem with there being very few adults in the whole thing - teenagers thought they knew everything and got themselves killed as a result easily. Plenty had already perished in the Ruins, yet it seemed none of the remaining ones had learned over their friends' mistakes. He figured it was a 'no way this will happen to ME' mentality. Vicious cycle it was, as it got even more people killed.

"Just... take it easy. The shit you have trouble with now, they can handle like five of those at once solo. We're not really needed for combat and exploration as it stands, so let's just get stronger to make them need us."

The point Akeno expressed was a pretty solid one, but it didn't stop Hideki from looking a bit despondent as a result. It was true, he had narrowly avoided a grim fate so far, and he wasn't aware of how much further he'd go before his luck runs out. But at the same time, given how everyone has been doing discoveries lately, it felt like everyone was doing something relevant, while he was just standing in the sidelines, being useless. This phenomenon was still a danger to everyone in the city, and he felt everyone should put a bit of themselves to help the cause.

But how much would be enough?

Taking a sip from his drink, he tried to shift the conversation into something else. "Oh yeah, Akeno-san, did you ever get that jacket replaced after the incident?"
