Name: Hyun Song
Gender: Male (born female)
Age: 15

Class: 1-3

Clubs/Occupation: Light Music, Basketball

Personality:
Hyun is a very well-worn and tempered boy for his age, keeping a slight smile and a quiet manner. Having been through quite a few things in his life, he does whatever he can to help anyone in need. Make no mistake, however, as Hyun isn't the type to enjoy going out of his way to be an overly social person. Hyun does his best to keep himself and his attitude in check, although life itself will get the best of him. Still, he'd rather not be alone, so he'll often force himself to swallow his fears and go with the flow.

When it does come to friends, however, Hyun is fiercely loyal. The last thing Addy would ever want for himself is to see his loved ones insulted or hurt, or for anyone to needlessly lose their lives. He will straighten out his buddies whenever he needs, but he can't help himself when bads things happen. Anything that can go wrong can easily drive him to the edge, and despite his immense efforts to keep under pressure, there will be that one moment when he lashes out in anger. Every bit of failure, even the smaller ones, can easily turn him inside out.

When he manages to get free time, Hyun becomes a lot more laid back. He greets anyone, regardless of who they are, with manners and respect. He does everything he can to make others comfortable around him, but will become a lot more stern if others step out of line. While he tries to avoid any sort of violence for the sake of staying in school, Hyun may be pushed to the limit if things grow too out of control. He often wrestles with his more delinquent-like tendencies, trying to be the better man in spite of himself.

Hyun still remains a music junkie at heart, however. He's gown up on punk and metal, and he very much takes pride in the tunes that he loves. He also holds his guitar near and dear to him, never letting it outside of his room unless he feels particularly inspired. While it can be awkward for Hyun to try and make friends, a similar musical taste often makes things all the easier. Hyun also holds a love for puzzle-solving, something that he finds stimulates him just as much as music does. Of course, he isn't exactly the best at them, which he dares not speak of around his peers for the sake of his own self-esteem.

History:
Hyun Song was born to a Korean family in Osaka, his parents having immigrated as children back in the 1980s to escape the political turmoil of the time. Their own parents hoping for them to find more stable lives in the country, Hyun's parents did everything they could to carry on their wishes. In spite of the racial conflicts that plagued their lives, and would continue to do so towards their children, the Song clan remained strong. While Yi-kyung didn't suffer any complications when she came about five years earlier, Hyun himself would deal with some uncomfortable growing pains. Throughout his formative years, Hyun would grow to feel uncomfortable with being born a girl. Still, despite some initial awkwardness, he always had his family with him.

Of course, Hyun was never closer to anyone else than with his sister. Yi-kyung and Hyun bonded over the years, growing up on old b-movies and ghost stories, while also learning Japanese together. What really brought them together, however, was the music that they shared. Yi-kyung and her friends were punks and metalheads, having been deep into the scene for years. They were as into activism as much as they were into causing anarchy, though Hyun was mostly kept from all of this. Yi-kyun had a large collection of vinyl records that she was more than happy to share with Hyun, and she wasn't above teaching him how to defend himself. Yi-kyun was a hero to the impressionable Hyun, and while he was nowhere near the rebellious delinquent that she was, the two were inseparable.

Eventually, when the time came to confront his own internal conflict, Hyun was naturally terrified. Hyun didn't quite knew if he could really be seen as a man, nor did he really knew if he had what "being a man" is. Deep down, he was afraid of his one true friend rejecting who he really was. He sat Yi-kyung down, took a deep breath, and told her about everything. Instead of the world ending then and there, she hugged her brother and promised to help and support him. Her friends soon did the same, promising to keep their little family-away-from-family together. So long as Yi-kyung was around to help him, the world wouldn't seem so scary to Hyun.

However, their relationship would soon be tested by one fateful day. Yi-kyung suddenly disappeared from the family, leaving behind a note as she ran away. Hyun's parents got to it before he could, and had hidden it from him ever since. Hyun's shared circle of friends were aware of what happened, but refused to tell Hyun whenever he asked. Eventually, the apparent resentment Hyun's friends had towards Yi-kyung caused them to drift apart. With no one left of his age to guide him, Hyun had nothing left in him but frustration.

Hyun tried to move on with his life, dealing with going through school while trying to live as a boy. Being a minority within a minority, let alone still getting the hang of Japanese speech, Hyun's parents had always worried about how his peers would react to him. Unfortunately, Hyun faced a growing amount of harassment and vitrol every day, especially whenever he took an interest in girls. Of course, he had feelings for some boys as well, but the reactions were all the same. Among the other students, "Hyun Song" soon became synonymous with a lot of ugly things, and Hyun was forced to take it all in. Hyun hoped to find his usual comfort in talking to a friend, but Yi-kyung was still nowhere to be seen or heard.

Hyun eventually went back to the one thing that helped give him his identity. Gathering Yi-kyun's records and a guitar that he saved up for, Hyun let himself get lost in the music that he loved. He had even considered joining up or starting a band, though he couldn't really find anyone else. Eventually, a pair of headphones and a notebook followed the young boy wherever he went, closing off the rest of the world. Hyun's performance and attendance in school slipped further, and despite an intervention from his parents, it seemed that he was doomed to fall deep into despair.

However, Hyun would have his world changed once more. One night, coming home from school later than usual while his parents were away, he would notice a broken-in door and some strange noises coming from his room. He came into it to find Yi-kyung sitting down on his bed with a worn smile. Before the young boy could do anything, she came up and hugged him, the two siblings erupting in tears. As things began to settle, Yi-kyung sat Hyun down and explained everything.

As it turned out, she had fallen in love with someone. He was a boy of Japanese descent, one who was willing to see her for who she was. They were both broken teens, with the guy's own parents basically abandoning him. A few things led to other things, and Yi-kyung wound up pregnant. Fearing how either of their parents would react, they had planned to take whatever they could and run away from everything. As a matter of fact, Yi-kyun had already taken money from her former friends with knife in hand, and she made her way into the house with the intent to rob Hyun and their parents of everything they had.

Except, however, her boyfriend then decided to hit the ground running. Without her.

Even if he hadn't done so, Yi-kyun wasn't able to find it in herself to carry on. Having burned every last bridge in her life, she couldn't bring herself to even look at Hyun's face anymore. She came to Hyun's room to mend the rift between them, fully expecting no form of forgiveness. It was a lot to take in for Hyun, but in the end, he was simply glad to see her again. By the time it all happened, they could hear police sirens coming their way. The two sat down and waited, holding hands and holding their breaths...

Time passed.

Life progressed as normally as it could for Hyun. While he wasn't going to go out of his way to cause trouble, it still hurt to see Yi-kyun taken away for a while. Still, he wasn't nearly as angry as he used to be, and he had started to catch up with his studies again. He still had issues to keeping himself in check, especially whenever anyone badmouthed Yi-kyung, Hyun has been trying to keep himself under control. It didn't quite help that he's been somewhat distant from his parents ever since he found out about the note they kept. Being too young to hear of such things, Hyun's parents only wanted to protect him, although he wasn't quite having any of it.

Wanting to start a new chapter for themselves, the Songs moved into Nagashima. It felt oddly relieving for Hyun, despite not having much of a say in the matter. After putting everything he had into the entrance exam, Hyun would go on to attend his first year at Taiyoutono. It was a decent shot at getting any sort of a future, and he and his parents very well knew it. They hoped that Hyun will find the friends he needs to finally get him out of his rut completely, but only time will tell.

Appearance:
Out of school look

Hyun is a short and mousy individual, most kids his age towering over him. His hair has been died to a golden blonde, hanging down to the bottom of his neck. His eyes, by comparison, are a much more natural brown. Hyun's guitar appears to be large for him, though he still carries it with only a mild sense of discomfort. His complexion is somewhat tanned, though it is not too noticeable at first sight.

Outside of his typical school uniform, Hyun dresses in a very casual manner. Most people will usually see him in a t-shirt under a black-green vest jacket, paired with jeans and whatever sneakers he feels like wearing. A particular item of note is his chain necklace, a memento of Yi-kyun (who gave it to him as a gift, long ago). He hold a particular fondness for band shirts, going along with his own dedication to making and enjoying music. At home, Hyun tends to ditch the jacket entirely for the sake of comfort, enjoying whatever solitude he can get.

Current Weapon/Combat Skill: Outside of his own two hands, Hyun doesn't really carry any weapons on his own at the moment. In case of future attacks by shadowy creatures, however, Hyun may find that a baseball bat may prove particularly useful.

Heyas Lyric, welcome to Rebirth again! I'll be the moderator having a crack at this app. And it looks to be a fine first showing!

That said, there are some things I'll need to bring to your attention or ask, such as:

  • My first big question is the name 'Hyun' My understanding of the Korean language and naming conventions is limited, but what I have found suggests it can be a boy's name alone, with several different ways of writing it. Also, it can be a girl's name with a suffix. When started living as a male, did he stop using the suffix and wrote the name differently?

  • 'Band' is a different club that the sort of music that Hyun goes for. I think Light Music Club might be closer to what you have in mind or him.

  • The eightes were actually a pretty interesting time to live in Korea. Do I asp specifically if his parents left for Japan fleeing the political turmoil, yes?

  • Likewise, as second-generation immigrants, Hyun and his sister would have grown up being exposed to Korean from their families, but Japanese from literally everyone else. They'd no doubt have a way better grasp of the language than their parents by the time they were teenagers.

  • I am to understand that the issue Hyun had to bring up with his sister regarded his gender identity? Am I to understand until he spoke to her he lived as a girl? I'm afraid that entire point is a bit confusing.

  • The rest of it looks good, though I am left with a couple of questions still: Where in Japan did they live, if not Nagashima to begin with? Tokyo, Osaka or another of the larger cities, a small town in the boonies, etc?

  • The Persona works! But as a totally optional note, 'Pendragon' is another name King Arthur was known by and it's somewhat less awkward as a Persona's name IMO. If you like King Arthur and you feel otherwise, by all means, go for it.
