WHERE THE FUCK IS MARIO
"I had to say something and that usually covers weird outbursts like that. Either way it worked." He said with a small amount of pride. As she grinned he took a sip of his own drink, pondering his thoughts as the seconds passed by a little faster, putting the drink back down as she continued. "I think you can." He smiled, in a gentle assuring kind of way. "You made your decision and you seem better for it. Not everyone has to keep fighting forever." That was a question that Treo himself had pondered. Could he really do the same? Walk away from all of this?

Not easily, at least. "I know that... I just.... I don't want someone to die because of a mistake on my part..." He took another sip of the iced tea. "I can't guarantee anything, I just... I can't give up." It was a mixed tone, compassion and desire mixed positively, but futility and tiredness shone through negatively. In the end he sighed to himself and shook his head slightly. "I wish it was different, I really do." The honesty was different from how he normally spoke, but Treo was in a different state of mind. This wasn't a conversation about Personas, this was a normal conversation friends had that happened to touch upon his injuries.

"I just don't want to see anyone die." The tone made it clear he was willing to die to see that statement true.

Miyuki remained silent as Treo reassured her about her choice. A faint glimmer of indecision still lingered in her eyes, gazing off to the side, but she shook it off once Treo started speaking again. His explanation of his actions softened Miyuki's expression - for as long as she'd known Treo, it was rare to see him speak so frankly, to see him so vulnerable. "No one wants to see any more deaths, Treo," she said quietly, placing a hand on the table. "There's... already been too much of that." She'd heard snippets of the Samurakami and Fyodoor conflict, and had listened enough to know that both of them had died in a duel to the death. That, along with the park incident, and...

Miyuki sighed. "It's awful what these personas do to people. We're kids, most of us. What did we do to deserve this? I..." Her fist clenched on the table, unconsciously. "I don't understand."

There was a pause, and Miyuki blinked, some of the raw emotion slipping out of her expression. She met Treo's gaze again, her stern look returning. "That doesn't mean you can just throw yourself away to try and solve all of this, though. We've had this talk before, Treo, you know that."

"People think they can 'right the wrongs' because they've been given strength." Treo looked back at her, his expression still quite sullen. It was only to someone like Miyuki he could admit this failing, someone who knew of the community but chose to walk away, chose to keep to her normal life. But she looked happier, isn't that was was more important? People had died because of power being used to right wrongs. "The others don't... understand, they think its all some kind of game, who can go the furthest, beat up the most monsters..."

The Wild Card flinched slightly. "We have... after I threw myself off the school roof." He spoke with honesty. "After I got hoculus. You told me throwing my life away wouldn't solve anything." Miyuki was surprisingly frank with him, which kept him off guard. "But... I can't leave it to them, I just can't. It won't work out." Trust was something Treo simply couldn't do and to trust someone else with his burden was impossible. He took a sip of his drink.

"We're just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The same with everything else." He looked a little exhasperated. He didn't know what else to say.

"You don't have to leave it to them," Miyuki insisted, frowning. "You can put at least some faith in others. It's true, a lot of them treat this like a game, but that's just because we're all dumb kids who don't know what to do with this kind of power." She gave Treo a wry look as she said this - it was sad to say, but it was true. "At least the ones who just try and score points in the ruins aren't doing anything, well... worse."

Miyuki looked Treo in the eyes, giving him a pleading look. "You can at least try to work with some of them, Treo. Explore in groups, make sure no one dies by being there yourself. They can't all be that bad."

She didn't reply to his 'wrong place, wrong time' comment. The idea that fate would be so needlessly cruel was something that didn't sit well in Miyuki's mind.

Treo shook his head slowly. "Faith is like trust and you know I don't trust people." Her comments were true, what made him any different from the others? Maturity, for one. The teen had been forced to stand on his own two feet alone for a long time, the longer he had to, the more mature he had to be. The Wild Card frowned slightly. "I suppose you're right, its harmless compared to what we went through." But that was why he was so uptight about it. The Ruins hadn't changed, but yet they hadn't seen some of the enemies they had come up short against multiple times.

"They're not bad, I'm just..." The white haired boy pouted slightly, crossing his arms. "I just think they see it as a little game. Some of them even bring their own family drama into it." But that's not what she was asking. "I've seen how bad things can get and no-one is ready for it. I just..." He was at a loss for words, to be honest. He shook his head and pinched the top of his nose, letting out a deep sigh. "I didn't want to bring this all up to you, I don't want you to think you have to come back or anything." He paused, weighing the sentence and quickly adding. "Not that I don't think you couldn't, you're just... happy, y'know?" He knew it was a careful way to dodge the question, which he had been unable to give a straight answer to.

He wanted to help them, but he didn't trust himself.

Miyuki flinched visibly when Treo mentioned that he didn't want her to come back. "No, no I - I understand. I..." She fell silent, placing her hands in her lap and looking down, not meeting Treo's gaze. She closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath before replying, "I'm sorry, I just... I can't. Not again, not anymore." Reaching forward with a shaky hand, Miyuki gripped her glass again and brought it up to her lips, taking another sip of the tea. She pulled it away and breathed deeply again, fingers steadying.

"... You're right, though," Miyuki said quietly, her gaze still looking down. "I am happy." She looked back up at him and gave a slight, ambiguous smile, not really meeting his gaze. "For a while, it was hell. I felt awful, like a coward, or a traitor. I was there when all of it started happening, and I'd fought alongside a lot of people, so leaving it all just felt... wrong." She pursed her lips, then admitted, "I cried a lot, back then. Because of that and some other stuff. But now I'm here, and I'm happy. And now that I've lived a normal life again, I think... I don't think I could ever come back."

Her eyes flickered again, her expression changing not into something stern, or sorrowful; it was something that seemed almost desperate. "I know you said you can't leave it to them, but..." Miyuki met Treo's gaze with her pleading red eyes. "Is there no way you can try and leave it behind? Live a regular life, like me?" There was a moment's hesitation, and Miyuki clenched her fists in her lap before she continued, "... With me? I..."

There was something there, something unsaid, that if it came out, could never be undone.

Treo simply stayed silent as she continued. For a while it was hell, for a while she felt alone because she chose to run. Chose to survive, to leave it all behind. That wasn't cowardly by his meanings. After what the girl had been through, it was nothing more than acceptable. She was happy now. Life was good, life was... normal. Treo couldn't ever claim life had ever been that easy, but he wasn't the kind to try and compare mental scars. The fact she would never come back was a reassurance, Miyuki was a friend, after all.

As she looked back at him with her red eyes he froze on the spot. "...I.." He couldn't say anything. He took a sip of his drink. The teen had been known to be a manipulator some time ago. Human lives were merely tools, simply saying the right thing could get people to do what you wanted. But really, he was playing himself up. Human interaction was hard, the words that were left unsaid, he didn't know them, but he had a pretty good guess. He didn't have the courage to say anything more than. "I... I wish I could." He looked back at her and in his eyes was indecision.

There was a part of him that was considering it. "...You've always been there for me. You've helped me out when I could have died. But I don't... I can't..." He took another sip of his tea, finishing it off. "I don't think I could do that to you, make you feel responsible for dragging me away from everything because you're worried. I really like you. You're honest, something I can respect." He sighed and stared at her eyes, before levelling the gaze at his shoes. "I don't want to ask you to wait, but I want to see this through to the end. But if you are still around when its all over... when this nightmare finally ends..." The Wild Card smiled slightly.

"Then maybe that wouldn't be so bad."

Miyuki watched him expectantly for his reply, pursing her lips and trying for all the world to not look like she was about to break into tears. His initial response nearly cracked her heart in two, but when she met his eyes again, she saw the decision lingering in his gaze. He liked her; He really liked her; he respected her, but he wanted to wait. Miyuki couldn't stop her wide smile or the few tears that broke through her careful guard. Holding back a sniffle, she turned away, wiping her eyes before looking back at Treo. "I-I - ..." Her words were coming out choked. Miyuki placed a hand on her chest, taking a deep breath again before continuing. "I-I don't think whether or not I'm still around is really the concern here, Treo..."

Despite her attempt to sound serious, Miyuki couldn't stop the joyous tone coming out in her voice. "I-If you want me to wait, then you can't go and keep getting yourself nearly killed so much." She grabbed his gaze again, shaky voice and blurry vision starting to relax. "I... want to make you promise me not to get yourself killed, but I feel like you'd say something cryptic about promises instead of just agreeing."

Miyuki looked at him fondly. "I'm okay with waiting, Treo, but you have to still be here once everything's said and done."

The girl's mix of emotions was something he watched as he spoke, unsure if his words really had affected her harder than he could notice. Treo's mind was confused at the range of emotions she was displaying, but finally she was... happy? That was what he was hoping for. This wouldn't be the rest of his life after all and sleepless night after sleepless night going after the answers in the Ruins would not be his life forever. He had started looking forward to the future and that was a future he could he himself answering differently to that question.

As she grabbed his gaze he froze in place. A promise. Would he change the subject, or misdirect the answer? No. Not this time. Treo wasn't dense enough to see the next answer would be a tightrope walk. He didn't value his own life, but he valued hers and she valued his. The bonds were drawn, as Kyo would likely say. He placed his hand outwards, as if to touch her own. He didn't decieve her, or even say something that sounded like the truth, but was carefully worded. He simply nodded his head. "I won't get myself killed. Not now someone out there is waiting for me."

The Wild Card gave a smile and chuckled slightly. "Is that better than 'Promises only exist to hurt people'? I thought I'd try it your way for once." He seemed noticeably chipper, his self worth was still negative, but he cared about her enough to keep himself safe. Likely the only way Treo can say 'I love you'.

Miyuki tensed as Treo's hand touched her own. Physical contact was a subject that she still had difficulties with some days. After a second's pause, however, she relaxed, gliding her thumb across Treo's knuckles once. His skin was soft, she noted, somewhat surprised. She'd expected it to be rough and jagged, like the man it was attached to, but it was gentle instead.

Miyuki chuckled with Treo. "Much better." Hearing Treo say that he wouldn't get himself killed lifted a hundred weights in Miyuki's heart at once, and knowing that she was the cause brought a blush to her face. "So... I don't mean to tie your hands any further, but even if we're waiting, we can still... hang out like this sometimes, right?" She asked. "When you're free and stuff, I mean. More days just doing normal stuff would be good for you, I think."
