Aleph felt dead inside.

In actuality, after what was supposed to be a normal conversation with Seiji at the metalworks, he was feeling many things. He was feeling angry at himself for thinking that he could earn Seiji's forgiveness that easily. Goddamn, he was so fucking stupid. He should've just left him alone.

He was also feeling shame and disappointment, for he knew that what he had done to make Seiji mad in the first place? It could've all been easily avoided. Aleph could've said something different. He could've done something different too. There were so many things that he could've said and done. That he should've said and done, and yet he didn't. And he felt beyond guilty for all of it too.

But, in the end, Aleph felt truly, completely, and utterly dead inside. For he felt like there was now no hope left for him. He had so much progress, and yet he had thrown it all away in an instant. And because of that, life had officially lost all meaning to him. He was, to say the least, heartbroken.

Hey, Mia-san? You wanna meet me over at Tanjiro near the food court?

It's nothing special, really. I just thought it would be good if we hung out right now, you know?

He had already sent the text to Mia after he entered Tanjiro then walked to the food court. Now, he was sitting on a bench near the food court, waiting silently for her. After everything that had happened, Aleph didn't want to spend all of his time thinking about Seiji and how things could've been different if he had just took his fucking head out of the ground for one minute. He knew that thinking about him and being obsessed with him would just end with him making things even worse than they already were. It was the Beetle Hunt all over again.

So, he didn't want to think about Seiji. Instead, Aleph sat on a bench and waited for Mia to arrive, hoping that being with her would take his mind off of everything.

To say that Mia was something of a fan of mindless consumerism was something of an understatement. School, clubs and independent theater roles, a full social life and the ruins and preparing for explorations left little time for just doing some shopping or whatever. But she'd found a spare day when Aleph had texted her, and she responded with a 'sure.'

So with a pair of shopping bags from a couple of different places in a golden dress with a frilled skirt to her knees, a sky blue canvas jacket over it and a pair of golden-tanned gladiator sandals with a slight heel she approached the meeting spot.

She wasn't totally out of the loop. She'd heard that he was still getting some blowback from going along with Haru, as well as the latest excruciatingly well documented incident that they couldn't have blamed the wannabe dictator prick for.

He probably wanted someone to hang out with. She was probably top of an ever-dwindling list. Nothing like threatening to assault someone to ruin your social circle…

"Aleph? Hey, I got your text."

She was a bit surprised he'd still used the name. She had a rather clear view of why no one would ever want to give themselves that nickname after a few months in Japan, but he was stubbornly clinging to it still? Well, she didn't mind obliging if he kept wanting to use it.

Objectively speaking, she had to admit he was a real mess. A lot of his problems were entirely his own doing, or the direct result of him practically giving people who might not like him an instruction manual to make it worse.

She knew other people tried to help him and nothing came of it, so she was gonna save her energy there.

Still, she did consider herself his friend. Detached observations aside, he wanted someone to talk to and she was there.

She gave him a smile, and set her bags down. "Hi, mind if I sit here for a second?" She helped herself to a seat about a hand and a half's width from Aleph and sighed. "Wow, didn't even realize I was walking that much. So what's up?"

She thought she knew despite the nondescript text, but who knows? he could have surprised her.

Aleph looked up as he heard Mia's voice and smiled softly. It was always nice to see that, despite everything that had happened, she was stilling to stand by him and spend time with him. Even after everyone else practically gave up on him, she was still willing to be his friend...

If only he could say the same thing for all of his other friends.

"Hi, Mia-san." He greeted her, then scratched his head. "You know, you can just call me Akira. If you want to, I mean. I don't really wanna be called Aleph anymore. I mean, now that I think about it, I don't know why I even chose that nickname. It's just more trouble than I thought it'd be worth."

Of all the things that could've been associated with a terrorist group, why the word Aleph? He honestly had no idea why anyone would name their group that. Regardless, the nickname was ruined forever, which was even worse since the Hebrew alphabet was the only foreign language Aleph ever knew that sounded even remotely interesting.

Well, now what the hell are you gonna do for a nickname? That Aleph thing was like your defining trait. It was part of your identity. Well, that, and your mom's old scarf.

I guess I'm just gonna have to do without my mother's scarf. But, maybe I could find another foreign language nickname thing. One that's not associated with any terrorist groups and sounds cool.

One little internet search shouldn't take too long! Hopefully. Anyways, Aleph moved aside on the bench as he saved a spot for Mia. As the conversation started, Aleph bit his lip before responding. He really wanted to say so many things, but he didn't want to think about Seiji. Or anything else that happened the week before, really.

"Not much, aside from...well, everything that happened." He said awkwardly. It was wonderful how making one new friend could lead to so much disaster. Purely wonderful. "But, enough about me. How have you been?"

'The first thing he'd ever said that made sense, if you ask me'

She wouldn't have put it so starkly, but she got the gist of what Lif was trying to say: It was crazy for anyone to keep using a nickname like that. Doubly so if they actually thought they could do so without a staggering amount of blowback as a result.

But the question of how she was doing? Honestly there was a lot of cause for stress in her lately. Time with Karma was becoming more scarce. The start of the second school year coming up meant that it was time to really start kicking it into high gear regarding planning for the future. Her side productions were getting more and more demanding and that wasn't even approaching the supernatural side of things.

"I've been a bit tired, lately." She said with a smile and glancing down to her feet. Keeping the summary just light enough to not go into too much detail.

Aleph looked at Mia in concern as she gave her response. While he was aware that a lot of his friends had very important things to take care of from time to time, such as Naoya with the metalworks and Kyo with the Shadow hunting and vigilantism, he didn't think Mia would come crashing down so easily. So, he couldn't help but feel a little worried for her.

"Oh. Well, do you need to rest?" He asked. "It might be a good idea to take it easy once in a while, you know?"
