The process for getting a job at the library was a lot more informal and a lot less intimidating than Haru expected it to be - they'd asked the lady at the desk, an old friend of Haru's since they'd come in as a child, and was immediately received by a warm smile and a look of excitement. Of course Haru could work at the library part time, they had a position open for them already; everyone on the staff would just be delighted to have them on board. Haru was humbled and a bit embarrassed at the extremely positive reception, but they couldn't exactly complain. There had scarcely even been an interview; just a brief discussion of hours and pay and setting up a time for training.

Suki and Rei, the twins's mother, were both delighted that Haru had found a job at the library. As usual, Suki was more than a little concerned for her sibling's well being, but she was also feeling pretty sick, so there wasn't much arguing she could do. She did make Haru promise to be careful, which they did, mostly to comfort her. It was just the library, after all - not like anything crazy would happen there.

Haru's training day came, and apparently it just consisted of shadowing another part-timer to learn the ropes and how everything worked. When the lady at the desk pointed out who Haru would be shadowing, their face brightened and a smile broke out. It was Trent... Puh-roc-ter? That foreigner they'd met the other day with the last name they could never pronounce. (It wasn't even that complicated, whenever they tried their tongue just randomly exploded) Feeling chipper and excited for their first day as a library staff member, even if it was just training, Haru walked on over to Trent, trying not to skip, and fidgeting with the sleeves of their sweater.

"Um, hi!" Haru said in a voice likely too loud for the library. They noticed and immediately brought a hand over their mouth, looking embarrassed for a moment before continuing, excitement barely faltering. "It's me, Haru! I work part time here now. I was told to shadow you for today, Puh... prooc-tuhr-san? Um." They bowed very low, and quickly enough that they felt a disquieting rush of blood in their head. "Please show me the ropes, Senpai!"

This was so great.

In the distance, a few feet away, one Trent Proctor had a cart with returned books next to him and was placing them in their correct aisles. Dressed in a black cloth jacket, with blue jeans and black boots, chances were that he didn't look all too different from the last time Haru had seen him.

The job was silent and a bit boring at times, but still nice.

After a while, however, a noise brought him back down to reality, as a voice that he knew sounded a little too loudly next to him. The pale young man turned his head and was greeted with the visage of a short person dressed with a somewhat oversized sweater, with their hair cut neck-length... "Huh. Hello there, Amachi-san." Trent didn't seem to pay them too much mind and went back to his job, expecting them to continue speaking if they wanted to make small talk. For some reason, if it was Haru, he didn't find it irritating or otherwise unpleasant.

Then came the news that they were going to be working at the library from then on. "...huh?" He turned towards his short-haired friend more fully when they disclosed the news. "Huh. Look at that. Well, er... since you're gonna be working here and all, think you could help me putting these books back on the shelves? It's part of the job, and it's good for you to know how to handle references and such. Each book has a sticker on the spine that says what section, bookcase and shelf they belong to, so it shouldn't be hard." It wasn't too exciting, but it was a part of the job.

"...I know it's unwise to speak in the library and all, but whatever. Why'd you take the job?" His regular tone and pitch of voice were low enough, so when he spoke even lower - like he was, given the fact that they were in a library - the chances of him annoying other people were null. Only Haru would be able to hear him.

Haru nodded - they'd spent so much time in the library that they were already reasonably comfortable with the organization system used there, so they could handle putting some books on the shelves. "Right! Ok. Books on shelves. I can do that." They started helping and, unsurprisingly, were capable of putting books back on the shelf. Haru did find it more exciting to do than most people would, - and possibly should - happy to be helping out in the library.

They paused when Trent asked them why they took the job, pondering their reply first before replying, "Well... my sister started a job a while ago, so I was looking for one too. To help support my family, I guess." They were speaking quietly, not quite whispering, but softly enough that no one else could hear their conversation. "My sister works at the maid cafe, so I didn't reaaaaaally want to work at the same place, you know?"

Haru stopped, frowned, then added, "Not that I'm belittling her work or anything. I dunno, it's that a some of the clientele there are kind of... off-putting?" They glanced at Trent. "You know the place I'm talking about, right?

Trent nodded as Haru proceeded to place books in the shelves. They began explaining just what their sister's job was, and when they got to the part where Suki worked at a maid cafe, Trent stopped completely.

He took a deep breath, then turned towards Haru. "...yeah. I know exactly the place you're talking about. Your sister's strong to actually be able to stomach the job." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "...'off-putting' is putting it nicely in some cases. I've been there. Once. If even I can tell something is very wrong then that means it's a really f--screwed up place." He felt that cussing when around Haru would be somewhat unwise. They weren't a child, but he still felt it to be wrong.

The pale young man had to wonder just how Haru's sister stomached the job. If they were anything like Haru then they had no place there, but... "...how's the pay there?"

Haru glanced at Trent, one eyebrow raised when he mentioned his experience in the maid cafe. "So you've been there, huh?" They returned their gaze to the pile of books, seeming to chew thoughtfully on that information as they worked. "Hmm..." Their slightly exaggerated tone and the small smile on Haru's face would belie that they probably weren't judging Trent.

"They pay is, in her words, 'just okay,'" Haru said. "Because we're students, we have to work part-time, so it's not an enormous amount of cash, but enough to take some pressure off of Mom for the rent, you know?" They smiled again, irrepressibly, thinking about their sister. "You're right, though: Suki's really strong to work there. I don't think I could handle it." They took a book off the pile, stopping and studying the spine for a moment. "But she's always been the more confident one out of the two of us. I know she's fine."

They leaned over in Trent's direction, holding the book in front of them. "Um, this one doesn't have a shelf location on the spine, just a number code. What's that mean?"

Silently, the pale young man continued placing the books on the shelves. His expression turned grim as Haru took in the idea of him having gone to a maid cafe in the past. "...you're judging me, aren't you." He sighed. "In... my defense, I only went because another person asked me for an appointment there directly, just to force me to go..."

It appeared to be that the pay in the maid cafe was 'just okay', by Haru's sister's words. "...would be nice to get more specific info than that, but I guess that's enough info. Do you know if it pays better than here, though?" Trent's intentions were beyond transparent.

He sighed when Haru asked about the book with a number code. Gently, he took it from their hands. "...it just means that the people in the storage department are lazy as fu--heck and can't be as--cannot bother to keep with the times. This new system with the stickers that have places and all was implemented a while ago and storage is supposed to use it with all the books but hey, here's a good example of them not doing their job properly." He looked at the code for a few seconds. "This goes in aisle 2, shelf 5, position 20. Don't ask how I can calculate that just from looking at this. Don't worry about putting this book in its aisle either, I'm just gonna grab it and toss it at someone's head, to see if I can get this place to work better." At the very least, Trent seemed to be... strangely passionate about his job.

Haru couldn't help but giggle, quickly bringing a hand up to their mouth to try and stifle their volume, waving their other hand to dismiss Trent's accusation. "No, no, I'm not judging you, relax. You don't seem like the kinda weirdo my sister complains about."

Trent explained the deal with the weird number code, and Haru nodded, understanding, and placed it back next to the pile. "Alright, just don't actually throw it at someone's head? That would hurt." They paused, then said, "And, umm, I think it does pay better than here? Maid cafe is pretty popular. I'm not sure about the exact numbers, though - my sister and mom take care of most of the financial stuff, so I'm not usually in the know."

They glanced over at Trent, curious now. "Are you planning on switching jobs or something?"

Trent scoffed at Haru as they spoke about definitely judging him. "...you're the first person not to think I'm a weirdo. I think. Maybe."

Soon after, Haru proceeded to ask Trent not to do the thing he wanted to do the most at that moment. "...you're telling me not to throw it at someone because that would hurt? But that's the entire point of doing it. You're no fun." He gave a low chuckle. "You're a nice person, you know. Too nice, even.

The pale young man seemed to be listening intently to what Haru was saying about the pay in the maid cafe. Their comment about him switching jobs got a chuckle from him. "...you joke about that now but it's actually something that I've been considering for a while." A pause. "...you probably don't believe a single one of the words that came out of my mouth. I know it'd be out of place for someone like me to be there but, hey, it might be an experience. Somehow I feel I wouldn't have to deal with the creepy clients as often as other people."

Haru puffed out their cheeks, feigning annoyance. "Well, if hurting someone is the entire point, then you shouldn't want to do it to begin with!" Their mock exasperation faded when Trent complimented them, replaced by a slight blush on Haru's cheeks. "Ah, I'm not so great," they denied. "You seem really nice, though, puh-rocter-san. I dunno why people'd think you're weird."

Apparently Trent actually was considering switching jobs, though, which brought a frown to Haru's face. "Really? Aw, but we just became co-workers..." They chewed the thought over for a moment, then replied, "Well, I don't think you'd be that out of place. I mean, my sister works there, and she's totally different from how they ask her to come off at the maid cafe." Pausing, Haru turned and glanced Trent over, thinking. "Hm. I could see you as a butler, though. It could work, maybe."

Trent chuckled at Haru's mock-annoyance. His smile slowly faded once they claimed that he was nice. "...no idea where you're getting that idea from. I've been told a bunch of times that I'm not too agreeable as a person and, well, I can't really say anything to that because it's true." He didn't look like he was too affected by that fact too much... in fact, it seemed like he didn't care at all. "I know you can't really go around in life expecting to please everyone, but when the amount of people you please approaches zero there might be a small problem."

Looming over his shoulder, his Shadow breathed heavily. Trent felt that it was going to bite his face off at any given moment, but it wasn't like it could physically hurt him.

It appeared to be that the news got to Haru somewhat. "...? Never said I was going to leave this job. Both are part-time things. I could afford to cram some stuff into my schedule to keep myself busy... or something." The pale young man took a moment to stretch his arms. For as much as the work was slow at times, some of the books were heavy, and lifting them several places did make him somewhat tired. Not more than swinging a steel pipe around in the Ruins, but still.

"That whole 'acting different' thing is something that I... like to think I can pull off, and also... hold on." With that he set the book he was holding in its corresponding shelf and took a deep breath, closing his eyes. After a few seconds, he straightened his back - possibly gaining about an inch in height - and running his fingers through his normally unruly straight black hair before sweeping part of it to the side. When all that was done, he basically looked like a different person - for some reason, he actually fit the role of a conspicuously attractive butler. If he didn't have the dark rings under his eyes and he actually put some sort of effort into his appearance, he might even be considered handsome.

"...you think I can pull it off?"
