Name: Hisao Nakajima Gender: Male Age: 41 Class: Not in school. Clubs/Occupation: Former police detective with the Nagashima Police Department, former prison inmate, released when his sentenced jail time came to an end. Former employee at a country-town bookstore. Currently seeking employment in Nagashima, so far without success. Personality: Those who knew Nakajima before his conviction would recall a pleasant, sociable man, one who was serious in the line of duty but had no problems loosening up and being "one of the boys" when the time came for some R&R. In short, he seemed to be an ideal officer and a great guy to have as a friend, and by all appearances of his home life, a perfect husband and father as well. These impressions were proven false when irrefutable evidence of his corruption came to light. Jail time seems to have produced a quieter, more closed-off and ponderous individual in the former Detective Nakajima, one who is slow to smile and even slower to act unless a situation calls for quick, decisive motion. It is in times of strife or life-threatening danger when the man's former sense of authority as an officer of the law shines through, but at all other times he appears intent on assuming a more subservient presence, as if in some way this behavior is a form of penance. When he is familiar enough with a person to loosen up around them, some of his former friendly nature also leaks out, albeit more subdued than previously. One thing that Nakajima refuses to indulge in now that he has been released from prison is alcohol, no matter how social the occasion, as he recognizes the temptation to drown his sorrows in the bottle and wishes to avoid that well-known path to self-destruction. Reflective of this decision, Nakajima also prefers fruit juice, milk, tea, and coffee to anything carbonated, and has gained an appreciation for healthy foods that he lacked even as a fully-active member of the force. It is not hard to deduce that the minimalist diet he endured in prison is part of his resolution to take better care of himself on the outside, although he may have come to appreciate fresh produce in particular during his time in the country. When out in public, Nakajima still walks with straight-backed authority, a habit he retained in prison, where cutting an imposing figure saved him trouble from other inmates. In an inverse of his other personal quirks, he only seems to revert to a subservient slouch when around people he is familiar with and has learned to trust. When relaxing on his own time, Nakajima prefers quiet pass-times such as reading, fishing, and exercising. History: The story of Detective Hisao Nakajima is one that has made the rounds more than once in most every rumor mill among the Nagashima Police Department. It tells of a man who seemed to be a prime example of what every officer in the NPD should strive for: competent, intelligent, authoritative, one who took his duty seriously but was also a fine companion to other officers and a good friend when off-duty. It told of an upstanding family man with a wife, son, and two daughters. And then it told of how he was outed by his partner, Shika Kohaku, who learned that he was accepting bribes from the yakuza to turn a blind eye toward certain activities within the department. Nakajima was, as it happened, a very small player in the corruption scandal that this investigation lead to. Evidence of other, larger players only turned up when Nakajima, after being convicted of his own crime, quietly slipped his old partner a few names from prison almost half a year after his conviction. Why he did so is a point of debate among police-station rumormongers. Some say he came to regret his actions after his wife and children disavowed any further connection to the man. Others say he had always secretly harbored feelings for Kohaku and gave her the information to get back in her good graces. His former partner received her own promotion to detective not long after the investigation was closed, lending some steam to this particular rumor. Regardless of the reason for his decision to break a long-held silence, Nakajima's aid in finding evidence to arrest three more corrupt officers was given in a non-official capacity and did nothing to shorten his sentence. In prison, Nakajima appeared as much an example of a model inmate as he had previously been one of a model law enforcer. He stoically weathered the occasional abuses of those prison guards who were less forgiving of his crime than others; he succeeded in avoiding major trouble with the other convicts. Early on, he was contacted by an agent of his former yakuza connections, offered a chance at working for them when he got out in exchange for a favor that was never audibly specified, as Nakajima bluntly turned down the offer before the man finished voicing it. This part of the story fuels speculation that Nakajima was changed by his experience of prison life: another guard overheard the exchange. After the information made it to his superiors (resulting in the arrest of another corrupt officer), it eventually leaked out into the rumor pool as well. After a handful of years in prison for his bit-part crime, Hisao Nakajima was released back into society. He initially left the Nagashima area altogether, seeking as clean a start as it was possible for him to achieve. After some time seeking work and living off of money he had saved up over the years, he found his way to a rural town some distance to the north and west of his home city. Here he found work at a small book shop, the owner of which was a liberal-minded descendant of European immigrants who decided to chance hiring him in spite of his record. Less than a year after living out of a tiny, run-down house in this quaint and quiet farming town, slowly repairing and renovating the home into a comfortable dwelling in which to spend the rest of his days, news reached Nakajima that changed his plans completely. Two of his children, his son and youngest daughter, had disappeared without a trace over the course of five months. Nakajima's ex-wife Rika got in contact with him, feeling obligated to at last let him know, and also to tell him that she and their remaining daughter would be leaving Nagashima at the earliest opportunity. Nakajima in turn offered the two of them the house he had lived in as his home for the past eight months. And when Rika expressed disgust at the thought of living with him again, he told her point-blank that if she didn't take the house, he would sell it... because he was going back to Nagashima as soon as his affairs were in order. Hisao Nakajima would dust off his detective training one more time, this time as a civilian, he said. He would do everything he could within the bounds of the law to find out what had happened to their children, and to see the culprits brought to justice. He set out for his former home one month later, unaware of just how much had happened there in the years he'd been gone. Appearance: Nakajima is a lean man with an athletic, toned, strong-shouldered frame, his eyes quite narrow and his black hair short and well-combed, though wisps of gray have already begun to surface around the sides. While in the police force he was known to sport a thin mustache, but these days he prefers to go clean-shaven. His face is well-lined with the beginnings of age, giving him a bit of a stern demeanor regardless of his facial expression. Nakajima's sense of style has been colored by the life of a police officer and further encouraged by eight months' living in the country: he prefers lean-but-functional jeans and cargo pants and simple button-up shirts, clothing that's easy to move around in and cheaply-replaced at any store one might walk into. While not wearing indoor-shoes, Nakajima favors work boots. Unlike his other clothing items, he puts a good deal of money into making sure he has durable boots that will last a very long time. Weapon: Nakajima is a black-belt karate practitioner, and kept up his skill by performing basic katas while in prison so as not to forget the moves he was taught. He also retains his skill and knowledge of basic firearms, primarily handguns, shotguns, and hunting rifles, although he only has significant experience with standard-issue police revolvers and currently owns no such weapons at all. Mask: A plain-looking wooden Norse mask.
