Tanjiro Shopping Center was famous in Nagashima for its wide variety of stores, shops, and restaurants, as anyone in Nagashima ever knew. One of those stores just so happened to be a bookstore, which sold a variety of books, magazines, newspapers, manga, and just about anything else that had pages. And it was at this very bookstore that a sleepy-looking boy with long dark hair was conducting his business. Tohru Touma scanned the large shelves of the bookstore, examining the spines and titles of the individual books. It had only been two weeks after he and his family first arrived in Nagashima, and that he had enrolled himself in Reitaku High School, one of Nagashima's local high schools. But, it was already spring break, and Tohru, so far, had absolutely no idea where he stood in his new home, with its new society and its new culture. His father had tried to convince him to join a sports club, if for no other reason than at least to attempt to secure a high social status among his fellow students, but Tohru refused. No matter how his father looked at it, Tohru just could not see himself as an athlete. Anyway, Tohru had already acquired about four books, two of which were written with the rather obscure topic of demonology in mind, and the other two dealing with the topics of coding and programming. He soon came across a book that dealt with the odd concept of artificial intelligence. And so, he picked the book from the shelf, added it to his stack, then carefully made his way to the cashier. |

Momoe was also in the store, looking for a book that she was going to rent about people who had ghost encounters, she figured It would help her should she encounter a ghost one day and she was not sure what to do, she was sure that Nagashima had some, like the fabled Ghost girl in the Taiyoutono Dormitories, but she has to find out about that by herself, while looking at the shelves, Momoe found a book that could help her, "Yeah...This will do, and I have enough yen to buy It to." Momoe said as she grabbed the book and looked at it, "Oni and Ghost Storys: Based on True Events written by Ai Nobuko" was the name of the book and she almost squealed in glee of finding a book that she actually wants to read. Momoe headed towards the cashier but saw a boy about to go to It first, she decided to let him go first since she came later to him and that she didn't want to leave a bad impression on him, even If she doesn't know him yet. "Oh please, you go first, my pleasure...Pleasure, what a funny word." |

"Artificial intelligence, eh?" a voice would say from behind both Momoe and Tohru. A girl of average height and brown hair swept into a low ponytail appeared behind them. She wore a white knit sweater that was reached to her thighs and was fastened by a fashionable belt. She wore leggings and ankle boots and she had a bohemian handbag slung over her shoulder. In one hand, she held a single book with the title Quantum Mechanics and Experience. The girl was looking straight at Tohru. Her indigo-colored eyes appeared to be looking at his selection of books. "I wonder if your book's going to touch on the Chinese Box thought experiment, but I guess it depends on the author." It was weird for a person to randomly just speak their mind about something, but the girl showed no hesitation. She was smiling rather brightly. Her straight posture with the lax way she hugged her book showed a combination of confidence and amiability. Edited by Miharu Yoshikuni, Mar 31 2016, 08:45 AM.

Tohru headed for the register, but before that, he noticed two girls who also had books, one of which seemed to be interested in his. Tohru smiled lightly, as this did not really happen often. Or at least, not at school or the library or, really, any other place that had other people around Tohru's age. This actually pleased him. "Oh, um, yeah. I've heard this author is a follower of the Chinese room school of thought." Tohru said. "I've also heard that this books touches on other things, such as the Turing test, computationalism, symbol processing, and other things. It's amazing, really." Tohru turned as the other girl stood aside to let him go to the register. "Oh, uh, thank you." He said, smiling. He then bowed to the other girl politely, then walked towards the register, where he greeted the cashier. "Hi, um, I would like to buy these books, please." As the cashier rang up his purchase, he turned to the girl holding the ghost story book. "You know, I've heard many stories about hauntings and poltergeists and things like that." He said. "I mean, I've always been into reading about spirits and demons and other such monsters for the longest time. It's just something about all of it that really fascinates me." |

Momoe watched as Tohru talked to the other girl with the book...No fair, she wanted to be in the conversation, maybe they could be her new...Friends, she really wanted to be in the conversation...Even If she has to snap to do so...And then Tohru thanked her for letting him pass. "Oh, It's no biggy...I just like to be nice." Momoe said blushing as she looked at the other girl. "And hello." She said before looking back at Tohru who expressed interest of Momoe's book and said that he used to read books like that as well. "Oh...Really?" Momoe said sounding interested at Tohru before asking him a question. "Do you think there real...And that those movies that make you believe there based on true events are based on true events?" Momoe said before speaking again, now getting interested in Tohru's supernatural side...The other girl can join to. "Do you really believe in the supernatural?" |

The girl brightened up when she heard him go a little into detail about the contents of the book. Of course, she knew most of the things he was talking about, but finding someone into the topic was a little rare. "Well, yes, anything about the basics of artificial intelligence has to touch on those things," she said. "Same with the Chinese Room, I guess. It was silly of me to ask in the first place. It's a pretty basic thought experiment. Though I wonder if it also has counter-arguments regarding the fact artificial intelligence was not sentient to begin with, but rather formed to act as such. There's--" The young woman stopped herself and smiled sheepishly. "Forgive me. I was getting carried away; a terrible habit of mine," she said. She also turned to the other girl who had greeted her. "And good day to you, too." As they got in line, the boy remarked something with regards to the girl's book. It seemed to be something about the supernatural. The other girl eventually asked her about her opinion on the matter too. "Ah, well, that's a little tricky to answer," she said. She crossed her arms and tapped her cheek thoughtfully. "I strongly believe that the supernatural does exist, but on a basis that we simply don't understand," she said. "A lot of people argue that it's too vague and can't be approached objectively in order to affirm as real, but if you look at it, there are so many things in science itself that were and are still hard to comprehend. It's also very hard to find evidence since most things are eye-witness and the few evidence people can conjure up aren't enough to confirm it as they can be deemed as hoaxes. Heck, even people who claim to have first-witness accounts pass it off as having rationale like creaking floors, temporary hallucinations, etcetera. However, I'm rather opened minded about it since science makes many things possible; for example, the many-world's theory where decisions and actions split realities and timelines into many branches and--" Ayano blushed and closed her mouth. She chuckled sheepishly. "Pardon me for talking so excessively. Where are my manners?" She offered her hand to the two folk. "My name's Ayano Murasaki. I'm a future student at Rokujima." |

Tohru listened intently as the girl went on about the arguments that proved and disproved the inherent sentience of artificial intelligence, but then frowned as she stopped herself. The conversation was becoming more and more interesting to him as it went on. "No, no, it's fine. It's okay." He reassured while waving his hand lightly. "It's good to hear from someone so interested in things like this." Of course, the other woman asked him if he believed in the supernatural. How could Tohru not believe in any of it? After all, there were just some things in both life and the world that neither science nor logic nor even reasoning could explain. So, of course, when all of those failed, the supernatural was the only thing left to turn to. It was also exactly how it worked out for things like fantasy. Or religion. Or basically, all of mythology in general. "I agree with her. Sometimes, when we think we know everything or that we have figured out just about everything on the planet, in life, or in the universe, we end up discovering new things that completely change what we know and think about the world and the universe and life forever." He said. "I like to consider myself open-minded as well, in that I believe that supernatural does exist. It's just that we don't understand it as much as we would like to think we do. It's why people are always debating whether or not life really does exists on other planets aside from Earth. Or really, if life is capable of existing beyond Earth, for that matter." Then, one of the girls introduced herself, to which Tohru smiled and nodded. "It's nice to meet you, Murasaki-san." He said. "My name is Tohru. Tohru Touma." |

Momoe listened as Ayano and Tohru talked about their opinions on the supernatural while Ayano's opinion was long and quite hard to take all in, Momoe appreciated Tohru's opinion on the matter better...Starting to get more interested In the boy as he quickly talked about something Momoe actually like's. "Yeah...I can agree with that." Momoe said to the two as she quickly spoke again, "But do you think we will...Find something of the unknown very soon, like live on other planets or the possibility that there really is an afterlife?" She said to the two wondering about her question. Before moving back onto Ayano, who was going to introduce herself to Tohru, making Momoe wonder If she should do that as well...They seem friendly and have good points about her favourite hobby, so she might as well, quickly Momoe took one step back from both Tohru and Ayano as she bowed down to the two before introducing herself. "Mizuki Momoe, always around finding...Oddities, of this city...And talk!" |

"Well, if the afterlife is what interests you, some scientists are beginning to claim quantum physics may be the key to knowing if there's a god or afterlife," she said. "Granted, it's still very broad and a lot of people are still objecting on the matter. For example, some people believe that the consciousness is capable of transcending from its attachment to its physical body on the third dimensional plane to another one. On the other side, others argue that our consciousness is not an entire being, but rather slices that only exist at a certain point in time." Ayano pressed her finger against her chin as she thought about answering the other thing. "Ehehe...as for extra-terrestial life, soon is a rather tricky word," she said. "The Earth sends out things to explore outer space every year, each time going just a little further than the next. Traveling so far in itself is difficult and can only get a grain of sand of the millions of possibilities. However, if it comforts you, there have already been findings of other planets with water or traces of water such as our own. If we were to consider that extra-terrestial beings need water to survive like us, then there's definitely a higher chance. Either that, or the government's just hiding everything from us, right?" Ayano chuckled at her own joke. People were always going on about government conspiracies, right? When the two introduced themselves, Ayano bowed in return. "A pleasure to meet the both of you," she said. "It's nice to find curious individuals willing to discuss topics so openly. I find it hard talking about this kind of nonsense at school without getting a strange look." Edited by Miharu Yoshikuni, Apr 9 2016, 06:38 AM.

"I never really heard that theory on consciousness before. Although, it does put the concept of having a 'soul' into question, probably." Tohru said, then shrugged. "And I guess if we were to ever truly find out if life really existed beyond Earth, we would have to improve our mode of interstellar travel, so that it can carry us to and from planets more quickly. While using fuel efficiently, of course." Tohru smiled as Momoe and Ayano introduce themselves. It was rather nice that he could finally talk to someone about things like space and the fourth dimension without it becoming weird and awkward. Despite what other people might have thought, intellect was not as valued as a trait in modern society as it was in ancient times. Funny how humanity changes over the course of ten thousand years, and yet it always remained the same in some way or another. "I know how you feel." He said, nodding at Ayano. "Whenever I get into things like this, people seem to think that I'm just weird and crazy. Chuunibyou, I think some people call it." |
