He'd sat down without a word across the table, letting her say what she needed to at the moment. He had to give his cousin credit, insistence was a good quality to have in a lot of cases considering he felt so strongly about the topic himself. "I..." A pregnant pause filtered in as words escaped him. Daichi scratched at the surface of the table for a few moments before removing his hands and laying them in his lap, his line of sight following. "I love you too Mia." It hadn't exactly been the first time he'd ever declared it but the words felt clunky coming out regardless, as if threatening to get caught on his teeth. "You know I still feel nervous around all of you? I can't really remember the last time i've actually felt so seriously anxious about anything. Let alone people who I knew." A slight smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Leveling his gaze with Mia's again the smile widened exponentially. "I know you're strong and independent. There's no way I want to take that away from you as if i'm an iron-fisted control freak. Nor do I plan on acting like i'm itching to bring out any pitchforks or torches whenever someone makes me bristle the wrong way." Another pause, it hadn't even been that long and already he was struggling again? "It's for my own peace of mind more than anything. Family is supposed to worry about one another right?" A quiet, soft chuckle escaped from him. Daichi straightened in his own chair. His little cousin looked just that to him all the time. What was he supposed to do if not care? "Please trust me with this. I'm talking to you about this now because I don't want there to be any secrets between us, concerns or otherwise. And I know, I understand with Serizawa. Letting him run around without supervision could spell disaster for a larger group of people than just himself. If from now on you need...help babysitting him or something, I guess i'm willing to go along with it." If Serizawa counted the people who couldn't stand being around him Daichi was sure he was a number in the list. He was open about it enough that most people he counted as friends knew it too. That was really neither here or there with what he really needed to talk about though. "The last time I had this serious of a conversation sitting across from a family member there was a wall of glass separating us. Being here in the house I feel vulnerable. Like all the stuff I do as a dissuasion can't work. It's new, it's uncomfortable because i'm not used to it and I need to accept it as a good thing. I'm not sure how long it's going to take and that's why i'm so...odd I guess, recently. Going there to see him and then coming back to all of you threw me off-balance." |

She shifted where she sat as he spoke. Neither one of them seemed ready to budge in their positions, but was that really bad? If it weren't for that bit of friction, who knows when they would have had a talk like the one they were having and she was deeply grateful to have it now. "Daichi…" She reached out to grasp her cousin's hand. So much larger and more powerful than hers. It wasn't hard to feel delicate compared to that. But there was also the contrast of their intentions. She was ready to plow into the unknown to reach out for a better future for as many people as she could, but he wanted to preserve what he had and didn't want to take the risk. She couldn't blame him, but still. "Don't ever feel that way? Please? We all feel the same way about you, you'll always have family that welcomes you. You can just breathe easy when it's with us if no one else, alright?" Those were just words. It was what they inspired that mattered. She liked to think her cousin already knew that and just needed a bit of encouragement. "Would you like me to come with you next visit? Or is that kind of a personal thing with you and your dad?" She knew the situation fully, there were some things that a person wanted to face by themselves. She'd support him whenever and however, but that didn't mean it was best to do it there and in person. "Daichi, I want to get back to the main topic though." She looked him in the eyes, her look was warm and loving, but also held a steely conviction. "I'm going to ask you outright, do you think without a shadow of a doubt that Manabu Kaerunuma will ever do a thing like that again. Not if he could, not if you suspect he might, but if he will. If that's your honest judgement, I'll keep my distance." But there was more, of course. "Otherwise? I'll say it again. We both should approach him. You'd get a better feel for his character beyond what he did, and we might have a shot at making a difference down there. That's all I'm mainly after and I think cooperating with him will boost that considerably." That was…pretty heavy stuff. She was having the butterflies in her stomach moment and she finally exhaled. They were free to talk about considerably less serious matters. Namely Serizawa's social problems. "Um…anyways." Her tone was lighter, more casually conversational and her posture relaxed. "You don't have to deal with Akira if you don't want to. I don't think forcing people to be around him is going to do any good anyways. It'll just further reinforce the whole reason people can find him repellent." Like the nickname. Self-given nicknames are bad enough, but he also picked one that was linked to a terrorist organization. After being pointed out this fact, he still insisted people call him that for months. Even if she was happy to oblige that insistence, when she was talking about him with people who obviously didn't care for it, she kept it out. |

It was astonishing really. Daichi found himself almost lost in the details about her as she spoke even as he held her hand. Despite the serious subject matter at hand he felt a warmness deep within his chest. "No, thank you. My father's your family member as well but I don't want...i'd rather not have anyone else there if I were to visit him again." He couldn't look at it as keeping the past and the future separated from one another. It was plainly that he didn't want to associate positive memories with negative ones. "Maybe sometime in the future, I don't know. It's incredibly personal but I don't want to cut you off from any aspect of my life. Honestly, i'm just not ready for it now." When she looked him in the eyes he returned the gaze unblinkingly. His jaw tensed, eyes narrowed momentarily. Posture stiffened even more than it had been already. Could he truly say that he thought Kaerunuma would do something like that again? There would be no lies, not to ensure the response he wanted. Daichi pensively looked down at the tabletop and at their joined hands. "I do Mia. I think whatever semblance of being something that isn't a terrible human being is just veneer. Only a mask that he's wearing to make people drop their guard around him." He knew how painfully obvious that specific wording was, it had been chosen specifically so that she might really get it. "I don't say it lightly. Not like I want to accept that there's someone out there like that skulking around in the city. But it's real, incredibly real. He's going to hurt someone else again inevitably." There was a twinge of nausea to his tone. Very suddenly his throat felt like a desert. "So please keep your distance from him like you just said." The very intrusive thought of Kaerunuma harming Mia of all people entered his mind. Daichi rubbed his forehead with his free palm. What would he do then? No, no, there was no point in thinking about that kind of thing now. She would stay away, stay safe. That was all that mattered to him. |

She had the distinct feeling that he wasn't willing to meet him half way at all. She felt she had a glimpse of what the future held there, and it was a back and forth forever that would only wind up with her making concessions. She certainly understood why he was being so insistent that she doesn't take the risk. He cared about her and it wasn't as though she didn't take the risks lightly before she considered it, even bough he brought it up. But there was also something somewhat infuriating about it. She certainly wasn't some delicate flower that needed shielding from all the dangers of the world. Nor was she naively wandering into something well beyond her ability to handle unknowingly. So, she dug in her heels. Metaphorically that is, in truth, she leaned backed in her seat and folded her arms, holding the cooling cup of coffee in one hand as she did. She frowned and looked up to him. There was no more room for nonsense, and they weren't going to play around with what words could mean to prove a point. So she said, quite plainly: "I know what I said. I also know what I asked. However you garnish it, that's still not a concrete answer to a simple question. You're still speculating. That makes my offer moot, doesn't it?" If they were digging in, she'd picked her spot well. "What's done in the past can stay there as far as I'm concerned, and we're low on options to begin with. You can come with me, or not, but I've made up my mind, cousin." That was all there was to it for the moment. |

"I—Mia just because you want to see the good in everyone doesn't mean it always actually exists. Why is this your line in the sand of all the people, of all the times and places? You asked me for my honest judgement didn't you? Then you can see how I don't understand that you're still being so stubborn about this. What need was there to ask me at all if you already decided to dig your heels in?" He felt toyed with and there was the sensation of needles up and down his arms. She was being childish and immature. Daichi knit his hands together under the table and squeezed. Gaze shifted down to the corner of his vision, toward the edge of the table as he clenched his jaw. Losing his temper wasn't what was needed right now even if it looked to be the most rational thing to do. "How could you call it speculating when you asked for what I thought? Or was it all some sort of trick question to try and paint me into some sort of corner?" He squeezed his hands together once more. Just the image of the two of them in a room together was enough to make him sick and cause a boiling fury to brew in the deepest reaches of his being. "...How can you just decide to do that? I ask. plead with you to do something for fear of your safety and you careen headfirst into the other direction?" He took a deep breath. Let the oxygen stay in his lungs for a moment before exhaling, coffee now forgotten entirely. "Mia i'm begging you to reconsider. Don't do this. It's not your hill to fight on." He could feel his throat dry up and shuddered. Try as he did he couldn't bring himself to re-establish eye contact for fear of looking frail or too weak. |

This was going to go nowhere, so it was best to just end it there. "Daichi, don't misunderstand me. It's great you care about me and all, but look at how this has been handled." She looked him in the eyes as she added. "You bright up out of the blue that you want me to stay away from someone and all you have nothing substantial to back up that claim. You tell me its for my own good but that's something I should decide for myself." Yeah, there was no point in dragging it further. She finished her now cooled drink in a few long sips and left the cup in the sink. "It wounds like your minds already made up, and I just made up mine. I'll see you later Daichi, I'm going to get ready for the day." |
