It was chilly when Daichi awoke. His breathing was labored as he struggled in his half-sleep state to remove himself from his bed and leave the room as fast as he could. He opened the door quietly and similarly tried to make as little noise as possible when he walked away from the hall and toward the kitchen. There wasn't much chance he'd be going back to sleep now. At least he could down a cup of coffee or two before the house started to rumble to life. Walking over to the counter he went about the process of grabbing a mug and coffee-making and resisted the temptation to rap his fingers on the top while he waited. As soon as it was finished he gripped the mug and made his way over to the door and opened it. At the very least the sun was up. Judging from it's position the rest of his family might not be up for a little while? That gave him enough time to shake off the jitters and pull himself back together. He shut and locked the door and wandered back toward the kitchen. Why fear at all? We wield a mighty power. There is only few who can stand against us now and the more swiftly we grow the slimmer that number becomes. Trust in your own strength, let it be your hammer to crush anything that might rise up compromise the things you care about. Daichi sighed with resigned acceptance. Now that he was so close he needed to redouble the time he spent in the ruins. Ayane might have said once a week was the max he should go in but...not now. She was strong enough already and just being as strong as some of the people who had been there for a while wasn't satisfactory. He took a swig of coffee and grimaced as it burned it's way down his throat. No going back to sleep now. At the moment there was only peace and he'd be an idiot to be so preoccupied with things that he could deal with at a later time. |

There were few things in the world that were quite as nice as getting to sleep in. Particularly when it seemed the pace of daily life didn't leave much in the way of leisure time. Most of that was of her own doing, but not all of it. There was such a focus on succeeding at the expense of all other things that it demanded most of one's time. What time wasn't demanded for that was spent getting involved in other people. The needful and those she needed just the same. On top of that throw in such delightful extracurricular as swordplay and exploring monster-filled labyrinths. It all had a tendency to blend together to it's basest set during the twilight time of just before bed, or just rousing from sleep: Possibilities that were and were not feasible and what wasn't, and what was the best route to take to navigate it all. But it was an off day, and Mia didn't care about any of that at all. She was free to do whatever she wanted, or didn't! Sleep in until noon cocooned in her blankets and sheets? Sounded like a fine plan! …but eventually she was roused from her sleep by a particular aroma. The smell of coffee being made had that effect on her. She wouldn't say she was a morning person, but it started a chain reaction ending with her showering and prepping for the day and beginning simply enough with her slinking out of bed. She wasn't seen yet, but Daichi surely wouldn't have had a problem hearing her. |

By the time he heard the busy commotion of someone waking his drink had already been downed. It brought a smile to his face. He could do well and bring a nice cup for them, forgoing any cream or sugar in favor of the true wake up power that natural coffee brought to the table. Daichi rubbed his face with his hands before pouring another cup and heading off toward the source of the noise. So it was Mia that was the fellow early riser? It was probably the coffee smell, couldn't blame her for that really. "Hey, cousin, make yourself decent and come on out of there." He'd been practicing his english in private. There was still an accent on words that was a cause for serious embarrassment but it was better to get more fluent with the language. "Figured you'd like a pick me up to help jump-start the day. It's hot, though, so don't go snatching it and burning yourself." There were a few soft knocks on Mia's bedroom door as he waited for her. Recall what you need to do. That vile thing must not be allowed near her. Daichi scowled for a moment at the unbidden thought of Manabu in his mind and murmured under his breath, indiscernible to anyone else. He'd give it a little while and break it to her before the day really progressed but it just wasn't courteous to break such grim news to someone before they'd even really got up. Shaking his head, he smiled again. Happy and nice for now. They were family, they were surrounded by people that loved them, good vibes. |

"Oh! I see someone's been practicing!" The response might have been a bit hard to follow, depending on how advanced Daichi's lessons had gone. But at least it was very easy to get that she approved though context alone. She stepped out of her room a bit later, she was dressed appropriately casual to start a day of lounging around. Her hair was in a ponytail held up with a blue scruncy. Old comfortable tshirt and cutoff jeans with white calf-length socks. Her hair was in a ponytail and no-one would have ever suspected that a mere fifteen minutes ago the fresh-faced young woman was rather disheveled from her nights sleep. She was home and she was relaxed. "Oh, coffee sounds great. How long have you been up Daichi?" Things were still kind of blending together. That easy dreamy way one could be early in the morning. But she was getting a grip. And that started with a cup of steaming dark brown brew, followed by several spoonfuls of sugar stirred in. She held the cup with both hands and just breathed in the aroma for the moment, a simple blissful smile with her eyes closed. After a contented sigh, she took a sip and leaned against the counter by him. "Excited about high school being about over for you?" Naked of context of anything else, that was the first thing that came to mind to her. No more finals or college entrance tests sounded really attractive, in of itself, after all. |

Daichi nodded to himself with a smile. "Hey, just in case I ever decide to go visit your homeland right?" The preference for getting rid of that 'learning to be fluent in a second language' accent was obviously something he'd rather do before any trip was made. It did his heart good to be home. At that reminder his smile grew. "Oh a little while. What's that saying about early birds again? I wanted to enjoy the quiet to myself. Before any nosy American cousins of mine woke up and started revving their life engines." He was also really starting to enjoy being a bit brazen. It was probably Seiji's fault. He shrugged and motioned for Mia to follow him back out into the kitchen area because there was no real reason for them to just stand in a hallway and talk. "Excited? I suppose I am. It means i'm closer to that dream career. But i'll miss being able to scare all your friends by showing up out of absolutely nowhere." He laughed as he sat at the table. His younger cousin probably wasn't all too appreciative of his efforts but it was harmless. Well, mostly harmless anyway. "Or are you excited for that too? Shame for you I have serious political connections in the school now what with the election going just as hoped. So you better hope any less than scrupulous people you know are on the lookout. I've got eyes all over. Eyes that see everything." |

Was she excited about it? Every landmark was just another indicator of how much drift she'd gone from where she would have been had they stayed in America. Not that that was bad or anything, she was perfectly content with her life in Nagashima. The extraordinary events happening notwithstanding, it was a fine place to live. But in the back of her mind, there was always going to be a nagging 'what if?' And it wasn't going to go away. The social media messages from old friends were not quite resonating with her as they used to. Was that a cause for alarm? Was it just a natural consequence of a different set of experience and surroundings than the ones she found herself. Was that to a degree going to happen with her and Daichi now? He was going off to college and she still had high school concerns. She put it out her mind, smiled and rolled her eyes. "Finally, I've been trying to get an orgy organized for weeks…" She said, obviously joking. She took a sip of her drink and spoke in a more serious way. "Of course we'll miss having you around as much, but it's not like you're going for good. We'll definitely be out together all the time, just not all day, 's all. And your English is improving nicely." |

"Well, don't worry about that. Before the big day i'm sure you'll realize whose affections your heart really pounds for. What with it being legal here." Daichi winked at his younger cousin and smiled, hands laced on the tabletop. If she wanted to play the gross out game? He could trade back whatever was tossed his way. He was going to be off to Rokketto, sure, but he didn't really have plans of moving out of the house. That was just another thing that added emphasis on what had to be discussed. He wasn't going to be there to keep his eye out for her and nobody he knew would do as good of a job as he would. Considering Seiji had won the student council presidency? He was going to be busy even if he was a scanner. Choosing whose truths are revealed to you is tolerable no longer. Face now the harshest sights. Before he had say in the matter, Mia's body seemed to just...dissipate. The same process that had repeated itself before once again, leaving a hollow outline with nothing but a black, pulsating, disgusting thing that was sat inside of her. The saving grace was that it was considerably smaller than anything else he'd seen. The only word that rose and burned into his brain was...theft. She'd stolen from someone for some reason that he couldn't possibly know. "Mia...we need to talk about something serious here. No jokes." Daichi steadied himself with a breath. "There's a boy who goes to Taiyoutono. Looks like a frog, his name is Manabu Kaerunuma. You might have heard the rumors about him, maybe not." He didn't have to reveal his ability, not yet at least. That wasn't a burden she needed to bear. "I've asked some people about him. People I trust very closely. They've told me that almost every rumor about him is true. He's not a good person Mia. You need to keep away from him. Walk on the other side of the street, avoid being in his vicinity at all if you can." Pausing momentarily, Daichi rubbed his temples. "Just keep away from him. He's got blonde hair and looks like a frog. If he tries talking to you, leave, get away from him as fast as possible." |

Well, the joking light mood was kind of sent flying off into space. She was a bit taken off guard by the bluntness of the subject matter. It was touching that Daichi cared about her so much. He was obviously coming from a place of caring. It was reassuring to know that he didn't want anything bad to happen to her, just like she wished no harm to befall him or anyone else who mattered a great deal to her. If that's all there was to it, it would have been a warning heeded. But…something wasn't quite right. She took a sip of coffee before she decided to address it. "Yeah, I've heard some pretty unsavory things about the guy. I guess it's serious if they're all true, but Daichi… Does a person's life become reduced to one act? Does a person wind up punished for a crime forever?" She spoke gently, but quite firmly. It wasn't just about this, but there was an unforgiving edge to interactions she'd found that she didn't care for. It wasn't just her beloved cousin. Perhaps it was just something she was more attuned to because she didn't grow up where that was normal? "Has Kaernuma been given a chance to explain himself? What hope does he have if he's going to be shunned and excluded forever? When denied that sort of hope, it's a guarantee it'll happen again but it doesn't have to." She moved up beside her massive oak of a cousin and hugged him with her left hand. "I'd be a pretty big hypocrite if I said all that and I'd not try to give him a chance, huh? You understand that right?" But it wasn't about who was right, or who was wrong. Not to her it wasn't. She offered a compromise, a balance between his desire to keep her safe and her want to pursue the rosy notion that 'everyone deserves a second chance.' "I can't promise I won't go near him at all but…is it alright if I only approach him with you around? Or a good friend of yours? We can decide that later, right?" |

Daichi's already grave expression sank further into a frown, brow knitting together in apprehension. "Do you stick your hand on the top of a stove after burning it the first time or do you learn to not do it again? Whatever excuses he has, i've no interest in you risking yourself to hear them." How could she not understand that he was just wrong in the most affronting of ways? Someone like that wasn't the kind of person any girl needed to be within even further than arm's distance away from. "No, Mia I just told you—" Frustration boiled to the top of his voice and he took a moment to steady himself. "—Not even my closest friend is good enough for that. I can make sure that you're safe. I'm the only person who I can trust to do that. Not Hanako, Not Kyo, nobody else." So what if that said something about his faith in his friends? It was truth. "I know that you're friends with Serizawa despite his reputation in the community. Don't go crossing this up with that, please." Begging wasn't something he was overtly familiar with and the words tasted foul on his tongue. If it got his cousin to see just exactly how serious he was about this? Well, no personal price or sacrifice of pride was too great for that. "...I know you're smart, Mia. Please....what you and this means to me..." Daichi felt his throat tightening as his emotional state grew less collected. "You, this family, my family. I was alone for years. Then through whatever miracle we found one another. Bringing me into a home, giving me a home Mia. Somewhere that I feel things that I wasn't sure i'd ever felt before." Daichi tapped down on the tabletop with a finger, pausing to find the right words. "If anything were to happen you any of you? Something like this, that I know I can nip in the bud? I..I won't let that happen, Mia. I can't. Maybe you want to see good in people, that's okay, I don't fault you for that and I know how I can be overbearing and an irritation. I'm sorry for that but i'm not going to be sorry about keeping you safe, ever.' |

They had a problem beyond what Manabu Kaeruma was or wasn't capable of. Daichi's statements told a lot about he he was looking at the world right then. A little filter with how he saw things and the picture looked a bit distorted to her. "Daichi? Let's sit down for a bit." Mia had a pretty good poker face when she wanted to, but it wasn't easy to keep the deep set frown off her lips.. She was on one side of the kitchen table and invited him to sit opposite. She had the cup of coffee held between her hands. Still very warm, but cooling. "Daichi? I know where you're coming from. Really I do but…You can't do that. Not without living any kind of life, you realize?" She looked her cousin in the eyes, and softened her expression a bit. "I feel really lucky we met, and I really love you Daichi. I'll need you to protect me sometimes. I'm not doubting that. But I'm saying we don't even know if this will be one of those times! I can make my own decisions and I can take care of myself. Please. reconsider." She slumped down in her seat. Of course, there was the matter of Aleph. Never mind that he's sticking to that name despite the fact that he picked it out for himself, and poorly considering that's what the people who used a poison gas attack in Tokyo re-branded themselves. She was honestly surprised and disappointed as anyone else when it looked like any progress he made in his goal of actually interacting with people seemed forgotten when Murakami came along. But drawing a weapon on someone just because they insulted him? That was too much. "Serizawa's someone who'd be swayed by the first person looking for a useful pawn that told him what he wanted to hear. I don't think it'd be wise to leave him to his own devices and just get himself in worse trouble." Even if that was probably best for people who no longer interacted with him, she really worried about how he was going to end up later if things kept up as they were. |
