Maki had delivered unpleasant news for much of her adult life to many different people. Some screamed and howled at her as if she'd conjured up the misfortune just by informing them. Some broke down in tears, or refused to acknowledge it outright. And for others? They might have did any number of reactions, but it wasn't proper to show it.

There was no mistaking that Sayako was definitely in that latter group. It must have been incredibly difficult to hear the full extent of what was happening, but to also know there was little to be done about it?

"I'm afraid the world doesn't allow things to be so neatly framed." She confessed. "No wandering swords going to appear and bring justice to all the wicked but…that doesn't mean nothing will ever change."

She said she was perhaps happier not knowing. "Ignorance can be a dangerous thing. The Morrinagas and their various branches have only been free to do as they will because no one was aware of it. I'd say we had a chance of doing something about it now that this has come to light. Not just the two of us alone, and not at this moment but don't be disheartened."

It was perhaps a bit too early to be speaking optimistically. The Morrignagas were a malignant tumor lodged deep in the bowls of society. It seemed she was left dealing with yet another monolithic organization few would be able to do anything about. It would be another Fyodor incident then?

And that was a somewhat disheartening thought. Once any group gains a certain degree of power and ability to act anonymously then the rule of law no longer applies to them

"…perhaps that's enough for today?"

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
So there it was, frame in all its baldness and bright lights: the truth and the lack of anything to be done about it. Sayako closed her eyes, and remained steady for several long moments, breathing in, and out, then in... and out.

"If there's one good thing about growing up in my family," she said evenly, "it's that we're taught to master our emotions. Calmness and control. It's come in real handy since we met at the park, I'll tell you that much."

She opened her eyes again.

"You know," said Sayako slowly. "You are... if everything we've talked about is as true as my feelings say they are, you are the first person to have been completely honest with me in my whole life. I appreciate that, detective. I'd like a chance to get to know you a little, without all of this hanging over us. If you have the time, and don't mind humoring me, that is."

Everything had gotten heavy. It was like there was a literal wet blanket in the very air pressing down on her. An uncomfortable sort of weight that shifted readily to match her attempts to get from under it. Such things were to be expected given the subject matter of the conversation she and Sayako had just had, but even realizing that made it no less unappealing.

After all of this, she spoke of wanting to see Maki again. That…caught her off guard. She gave a candid surprised face to the Moranaga scion when she requested that.

"I'd like that very much. More often than not, work follows me home and I seldom have time to get away from the problems of others. It…can be most demoralizing, if I'm being truthful."
She actually managed to smile. "So long as it is no problem for you, I'm happy to do whatever I'd be glad to spend a bit of time together."

Was that such a good idea? Did it start to breach the line between professional and personal? She didn't think too much on it. Given the situation, both she and the young woman needed a bit of time to put their mind off the current situations they were in.
