[I'm not sure /pol/tastic is a real adjective son] From Trent's reaction, it felt like Haru had just brought up the weather rather than something that had been an enormous can of worms to introduce to some of their other friends. After a moment of initial confusion, Haru felt relieved that their new friend didn't seem to care much at all. That was, in one way or another, acceptance, right? "Yeah, I prefer, um, gender-neutral. They and them and all that." Haru bit their lip and, wanting to be sure, asked, "That's not a problem, is it?" |

Haru appeared to be getting rather worked up over the issue at hand. Trent could understand why, since human sexuality was still a rather hot button issue with people, but he really couldn't care less about it. "...huh, got it. Haven't really used gender-neutral outside the internet, but I guess I could give it a shot." After a moment of what appeared to be internal deliberation, Haru spoke again, with a rather timid question this time. "...why would it? It's not something I share, since I know I'm a guy and I was born a guy and all that, but it doesn't really affect me, so I don't see why it should be a problem." It wasn't until then that Trent took a moment to look at Haru more carefully - their choice of hairstyle, general attire and mannerisms were rather overwhelmingly androgynous. It was evident that they put a great deal of effort into the appearance they had... "...so that's why even your clothes are gender-neutral, right? Or is there another reason?" |

A fresh wave of relief washed over Haru as Trent continued acting indifferent to Haru's identity. "Thanks, Proc-tuhr-san! You're a really nice person, you know that?" They said genuinely, smile returning and tension dissipating from their small frame. They looked down at themselves when Trent referred to their clothes, pulling at their sweater. "Oh, my clothes? Well, yeah, that's part of it, but it's also to differentiate myself from my twin sister." A warm look (as though Haru's expression hadn't already been warm) appeared on Haru's face as they started speaking about Tsukiko. "She likes to wear more girly clothes, so I started dressing differently so people could tell us apart. Her hair's also a lot longer, which is super pretty, but it's really annoying, too, so I got mine cut..." Haru perked up suddenly, and said, "Oh! You should meet my sister! You two would get along, you're both kind of... uh... dour? In a good way?" They paused. "Erm, no offense." |

Somehow, it was strange to think of himself as a really nice person, like Haru had just claimed he was. At least they didn't seem to be feeling too nervous towards him anymore, which was... good? It's good, right? Haru seemed to become even more cheerful than before when talking about their sister. "...sounds like you really like your sister. That hair thing is something I know too, long hair's kind of... an unfun mess." Then, Haru compared him to their sister. Trent's gaze narrowed considerably as he looked at Haru with an almost comically offended expression. "Whoa there, bud, you might want to slow down - what do you mean 'dour'? I'm not dour, I have no idea what you're talking about." He fell silent for a few seconds. "...uh, 'bud' is gender-neutral to me, and... let me get this straight: so she's the one that dresses all girly but you're the one that's all cheerful and stuff?" Haru nodded vigorously, very animated about the topic of long hair. "I know, right? It's a huge mess! Like, you have to keep it straight, and it gets super warm in the summer, and you accidentally snag it on things, and it's just a hassle." They paused, tilting their head and looking at Trent's hair closely. "The plus is that it looks really nice, though - like, it looks really good on you, prooc-tur-san." When Trent denied the accusation of being dour, Haru couldn't help but giggle, holding a hand up to their mouth to try and stifle their laugh. "Ehehehe, sorry, I, eheh..." Unsure whether or not Trent was kidding, Haru cleared their throat and said, "I mean, maybe dour is a bit much. Kinda... stoic? Hmm. No, maybe stoic's better for you, since you're like... anime-character cool, whereas Suki is just a grump." Haru waved their hand when Trent clarified their use of the term 'bud,' shaking their head. "Nah, I getcha on that, I assumed you didnt' mean otherwise. And, I mean, Suki's not not cheerful, she's just kinda, um, well, over-protective? I guess? But she's actually a really nice person." They paused, then said, "We do dress differently, though, that's correct. Although she knitted me this sweater! So she has some similar tastes. What about you? Do you have any siblings back home or anything?" |

"Oh, I wouldn't know about the 'keeping it straight' part, my hair is always a mess and I don't really care and..." It took a few seconds for Trent's mind to fully register the fact that he had just been complimented. "...um." The conversation had somehow moved from Trent's habits, passing through Japanese poetry, human sexuality, and had ended up with Haru saying he looked good. The pale young man was at a loss for words. "...t-thanks?" He wasn't too used to receiving compliments, that's for sure. Luckily for him, the conversation moved onto another topic quite quickly - namely, Trent's dour demeanor. Or was it? "...oh, wow." Trent was also not prepared to be called something like that. "...it's the first time I've been called, uh, 'anime-character cool'." Immediately after he had flashbacks to some AMVs he had watched in the past. Wake me up. Wake me up inside... He couldn't deny, however, that it was amusing how Haru described their sister as simply a grump. "Huh, I feel I need to meet your sister sometime. She sounds fun." It was impossible to tell if he was being serious or sarcastic, but he didn't mean it in an offensive way. "...erm, no, I'm an only child. Have always been, so I have no idea what it's like, having to share stuff with siblings." |

Haru nodded happily, smiling widely as Trent accepted the compliment. He seemed a little flustered, but at least he wasn't denying it. Unable to stop themselves from chuckling at Trent's reaction to being called 'anime-character cool,' Haru decided to elaborate and said, "No, no, see, you totally pull it off. You've got like, the black hair and the like, cloudy eyes, and you have this dark, mysterious demeanor. You could totally be an anime protagonist!" Haru snapped their fingers. "You're even a foreigner to boot! It'd work. Totally." The conversation turned to siblings, and Haru 'hmm'ed in thought, resting a hand on their cheek. "An only child, huh? I kind of wonder what that's like. I can't imagine how life would go without Suki, y'know? Not that I don't appreciate her, but I'm just curious." Haru paused. "... By the way, Proc-ter san, you are on the clock, right? Should you be... doing work stuff?" |

"...well, 'dark, mysterious demeanor' is a word for it - at least you're not calling me a creep or something." Trent was still feeling somewhat weirded out by how persistent Haru was in trying to convince him he was cool in any way. "I don't really think of myself as an anime protagonist or something like that... and if I was then the anime would be fairly boring and would get cancelled pretty soon. Well, I guess Watamote is a thing but still..." Haru seemed to be wondering what life with siblings was like. "You know that thing, where you sometimes have to share your stuff and you might be annoyed sometimes by a brother or a sister or what-have-you? Yeah, that just doesn't happen." He paused. "You also spend much more time alone, but I guess you can't have it all or something." Shortly afterwards, his new friend wondered about his job. "...hey, do you legitimately think I'm doing something important here? Nobody ever talks to me or asks me stuff. I'm basically just there to make the place look prettied and I'd say I do a damn bad job at it. Like, this is the first time in a while I've had to talk about a costumer." That got him thinking, however. "...you sure you don't want me to help you finding a book or something?" |

Haru did a thing. ... The thing being shrug and say, "I dunno, I think you'd be a pretty popular anime protagonist. People really go for your type of character, at least in tv shows." They put their arms on the table and rested their head on them, looking contemplative when Trent told them about living as a single child. "The thing is, I just can't imagine not sharing everything with Suki? Like, I can't wrap my head around the idea of it, it's weird. Mostly because we share practically everything. I mean heck, we even share the same bed." Then they looked at Trent, frowning. "You couldn't have been alone too much; I mean, you had your parents, right?" Trent's question was likely rhetorical, but Haru immediately sat back up and nodded. "Yeah, it's totally important! The library is an important place, so making it look good is important! It's where all the... books are?" They shook their head. "Anyway, I, at least, think it's important. And, uh, I wasn't looking for anything in particular. I was just gonna read that one book that, uh, broke. So I guess I was gonna just browse?" Edited by Supnitle, Mar 14 2016, 04:23 PM.

"'At least in TV shows'... well, you got that part right." Trent frowned slightly when Haru asked about his parents. "...they were hardly home. Workaholics. I spent most of my time alone at home. I still do." It didn't sound like he was overtly affected by it - in fact, there wasn't any bitterness in his voice at all. "I... spent most of my time using the computer and browsing the internet." The pale young man scoffed at Haru's explanation. "Make it look pretty... they should have chosen someone other than me for the job, then." Once Haru mentioned the book, however, Trent began to wonder what exactly could be done with it - it wasn't like they could just leave it on display anymore, and he really didn't want to have to help any strangers that found out, like he'd just done with Haru... |
