Trent didn't seem to be into poetry, which was fine with Haru - it wasn't the world's most common hobby, or anything. They nodded at the mention of Midaregami, but replied, "Yeah, but I, er, already checked it out. I returned it today, actually. I thought it was an interesting read, but I think it really shines when you take the author's life and the time period into..." Haru paused. There probably wasn't much need to go into detail about archaic japanese feminist poetry with someone who just admitted that he isn't into poetry. They cleared their throat, a little embarrassed at the ramble they had almost gone on. "Eheh, sorry, you probably aren't that interested." Looking up at Trent, they asked, "So you work at the library to support yourself? Wow, that's really impressive... you don't look that much older than I am. Do you go to school near here?" |

"That thing about her speaking about herself in a sexual way in a time when women were only seen as pure and demure beings whose only purpose in life was bearing the children of a man and who were always supposed to be at the service of a male figure? Yeah." He nodded then sat at the table, across from Haru. "Revolutionary stuff. She caused some controversy with her writings, I think." He had just demonstrated that he had at least a passing interest in what the woman had done. When the time came to speak about where he studied, Trent stretched a little. "Dunno, if you're close to 17 then yeah. I go to Taiyoutono, but I... arrived here when the school year was already ending and have only been here about a month or so." |

Haru's eyes lit up. "Oh!" So Trent had done some reading on the author! "Yeah, yeah, definitely. At the time, her views were super frowned upon, just because of the views of the period, but the collection started to pick up some support when more Japanese feminists started coming out of the woodwork around the 20th century." Haru's eyes followed Trent as he sat down at the table, pleased that he was comfortable enough to do so. "I think the text is still relevant today, too, for sure; people can be super weird about women having sex, especially in like, idol culture and stuff." It occurred to Haru that they were maybe talking too much about Midaregami; Trent didn't seem super interested in the subject. Actually, he didn't seem extremely intersted in much at all, but he was still here and still talking, so it wasn't like Haru was going to leave. "Uhm, yeah, I turned 16 a little while ago, actually, so kind of close?" They smiled when Trent mentioned he was going to Reitaku, and replied, "Ooh, that sounds nice. I hear Taiyoutono is a really good school! I'm starting at Reitaku next school year as a freshman." They paused. "You transferred here, right? Are you living with anyone, like a host family or something?" |

Now idol culture was a subject he was slightly more familiar with, not because he was into it but because it was a much more common subject in the circles he moved in than, say, Japanese feminism and poetry in the 20th century. "...like, how some otaku actively track the lives and choices of idol artists during the holidays to see if they have sex with men because they want them to conserve their purity or some shit like that?" The pale young man idly flicked a lock of his black hair away from his face. "That is creepy and disgusting, in my opinion." To some people he might look like the kind of person that did those things, but he, somehow, wasn't. The topic changed to Haru's status as a school student. "...huh, so you're beginning high school now? I'm actually about to graduate and I have to go to college soon... weird how we're only a year apart." Soon after, the short-haired person asked him about the way he was living. Trent scratched the back of his head. "...yeah, I transferred here, but I'm not living with anyone. I'm the only person at my apartment." Fucking hell, I'm always the only person at my apartment. |

Haru leaned back in their chair and nodded in agreement. "Mmhmm, yeah definitely. It's super gross." They were quite glad Trent wasn't the kind of guy to be into that kind of thing. (He kind of looked like it? Or maybe that was just the 'strange foreigner' bit talking.) "I usually like giving people the benefit of the doubt, but eugh, I dunno about stuff like that..." On the subject of their ages, Haru's face scrunched up in confusion. "Huh, that is kind of weird. My sister and I have late birthdays, so we're a little bit older than most of the other people in our class. I guess that's why?" Their eyes widened in surprise as Trent admitted that he lived by himself. "Wow, really? That's so cool! You're really impressive, P-proctah-san," they said, still tripping over his last name. "I couldn't ever imagine doing that... I've lived with my family whole life. Doesn't it ever get lonely?" |

"...trying to police the lives of strangers, even though they are celebrities, is wrong. I've heard of people doing that, but just... no. It's... too much." Trent rubbed his face with his right hand. It was almost as though he himself had had personal experiences with those kinds of people... "I... dunno if it really is all that impressive to live alone, and... and..." The pale young man regarded Haru with a blank gaze as they asked if it ever got lonely. He leaned back on his chair slowly as he brought his hands to his mouth, palms against each other, giving him a slightly worried or pensive look. Doesn't it ever get lonely? He had been trying to dodge the thought, but now that he was actually forced to think about it, it did. It was lonely in his apartment the entire time. Not just his apartment - he'd felt lonely pretty much since he could remember. It hurt to think about. A lot. It wasn't like he could let it show, though. "...I... I try to keep myself busy." As much as he tried to mask it, it was obvious that something about him had changed - his demeanor was somehow even more grim than before. |

Something about the subject of home life seemed to make Trent clam up a bit, and Haru's smile faltered as the boy's expression turned grim. (Or at least, more grim?) Haru's lips pursed and their shoulders tensed at the noticeable change in Trent's demeanor. Had they said something wrong? Maybe, Haru thought to themselves, he was lonely? The question seemed to have struck something inside of Trent, so that probably had something to do with it. After a brief period of hesitation, Haru replied, "I-I think that's pretty impressive!" They leaned forward, placing their arms on the table. "Living alone and stuff, you know? At such a young age, and managing to keep yourself busy and stuff. I hope I'm like you when I graduate," they said, nodding affirmatively. "But, uh, it's easier to keep yourself busy with a lot of friends. And stuff. So... we should be friends!" Haru smiled brightly. "We can be friends, right?" |

It seemed to be that the person sitting across from him had realized they had struck a sensitive spot in Trent, and was trying desperately to make the situation better. As much as he appreciated the effort, it wasn't quite working. "I don't think anyone would ever want to be like me." His voice was rather low and almost imperceptible, up until Haru seemed to offer their friendship to him. "...mm?" That was strange. Ever since he had arrived to Nagashima he had flourished socially in ways he didn't even think were possble, but friendships just sort of happened - it wasn't as though someone outright offered to be his friend. "...uh, sure. I mean, we're already talking, we might as well be friends... Amachi-san." Somehow, however, there was still something at the back of Trent's mind - he still didn't know how to refer to Haru, mentally. I mean, I know there are androgynous guys and girls but good God this person is confusing to me. Or maybe Haru's not a he or a she, but a they. He pondered the possibility for a few moments. ...no, what are the chances? "...so, uh, sorry for asking, but are you a boy or a girl?" |

Haru tilted their head, fingers drumming quietly, internally panicking at Trent's low mood. What were they going to do? They'd just met and Haru had somehow already accidentally found a topic that made him uncomfortable. Nice going, Haru. Thankfully, things seemed to lighten up a bit when the older student agreed to be friends. Smiling in relief, Haru leaned back in their chair. "Great!" They said, legitimately pleased to have befriended Trent. The elephant in the room took that moment to pop up, and Haru visibly shrank. Instinctively, they glanced around, looking for their sister only to remember that she was at work and they would have to explain things themselves. "Oh, no, i-it's fine," they said, biting their lip and looking down at the table. "Um... Neither? I guess? I don't really identify as a boy or a girl - I'm agender. Do you know - er - have you heard of that at all?" A lot of the Japanese people Haru had talked to didn't know, but Trent was a foreigner, so maybe it was more common knowledge where he came from? Haru glanced up at Trent, eyes anxiously hopeful. |

Haru seemed to be oddly cheerful to have become Trent's friend. It was not a sight he was used to - someone legitimately being happy upon becoming acquaintances with him - but he didn't care anymore. Then came the time for Haru to explain what exactly their gender was, and they seemed to be quite afraid. Trent stopped completely. He blinked twice, still trying to take in what he'd just heard. TO mentally reply Haru's question, he had, in fact, heard about people like them. Quite a bit, in fact. In the online circles he moved in, people like Haru were considered to be abnormal and the general consensus seemed to be that they needed to be shunned for who they were... It's a good thing that he'd chosen to read up on the topic on his own and make his own judgment, concluding that there was no reason for him to have anything against them. Also, I don't really feel like roleplaying someone with such /pol/tastic views, just... no. "...huh. Okay." The pale young man appeared to be unfazed. "So you've got the whole non-binary gender identity thing going on? Gender-neutral pronouns and all that?" As much as his tone had not changed and he, in fact, seemed to be quite indifferent to the topic, he was not actively shunning Haru for it. In fact, he was displaying a rather accepting demeanor towards the issue - in his own way, that is. |
