"Just be your cute adorable self!" Miharu said. She sighed dreamily and touched her cheek. "Oh, I can only imagine how adorable you'd be in all sorts of different outfits. Huuuu...I bet you'd look great in a miko outfit! Maybe even like Reina from Touhou Project!" Miharu then opened her eyes and smiled nervously at Atsuko. "Gomen! I was in a little moe craze there. I just love spoiling my kouhais, that's all," she said. "You and Momoko-chan especially." |

"It seems Momoko will become my rival for my Senpai's approval! It will be legendary battle that will not end until one of us is dead on the ground!" Atsuko said proudly. She chuckled softly and smiled at Miharu. "Just joking! She seems really nice, hopefully I will meet her one day!" The orange-headed girl was always up for making new friends! "Alright then! Now it's my turn to see you dress up!" Atsuko said cheerfully. She pinched Miharu's cheek and laughed. "I want to see how adorable my Senpai can be!~" |

Miharu flushed and scratched her cheek. "Silly, no one needs to be competing for my attention for anything," she said. "Your both adorable in your own ways and I'd kidnap you both if it was legal to." It was hard to tell if Miharu was serious or joking about the last statement. When Atsuko suggested Miharu try something on, she blushed even more. "E-eh? But you've already seen me in a kimono," she said. "Besides, you wearing one was the whole point of coming here." Miharu sighed. "But I suppose I can since I've bothered you with all this," she said. She smiled softly. "Wait here for a minute." Miharu stood up and quickly moved to her bedroom. Had she not been used to kimonos day-in and day-out in Kanemasa, she would probably never have learned to put one on alone. However, this was an easy task for her now. Miharu opened up her closet where a whole row of them were. Some were old and from her grandmother's place, while some were newly made thanks to her godmother. The end of the school year... she thought to herself. A shadow cast over Miharu's face for a moment. It was almost time for her to head to Kanemasa and face everything she had been hiding from for the past two years. She didn't have the courage to stand up to her godmother, how much more all of the village heads and family she had disappointed? How was she even supposed to tell them no? As Miharu thought about these things, she picked out one out. When Miharu would come out the door, Atsuko would see Miharu wearing a dark black kimono with floral print along with a weaved sash. She had let down her hair completely, but swept some up to the side using a hair comb with a blossom on it. "This one, I have to wear soon," Miharu said as she walked up to Atsuko. She sighed reluctantly. "I half-wished I didn't have to." |

"Senpai..." Atsuko muttered. Something was wrong, but what? Miharu seemed pretty happy a moment ago. So why did she seem so sad now. Atsuko honestly didn't know what to think. The miko had so much stress in her life already. You are friends with this girl. Comfort her, my dear. It wasn't bad advice. But she didn't know what the problem was. How could you comfort someone when they were in that state. She thought about all the things that Miharu told her. Then it hit her. Kanemasa. "Kanemasa... You have to wear that when you return there..." The younger girl said softly. Atsuko looked Miharu in the eyes and gave her a sympathetic smile. "Are you afraid of returning, Miharu?" |

Miharu glanced to the side. "Yes," she said bluntly. "After all, I did something the village considered rather...unforgivable." Miharu's words were dead weight that seemed to linger for a moment. However, she managed to smile a bit more. "However, I'm sure it'll go fine. After all, everyone is just after the best for the town." It occurred to Miharu that she had never once told Atsuko--or anyone else for that matter--about Kanemasa. Well, everyone except Yamato. The more she thought about it, the more guilty she felt. She had just run off like a cat caught in a scramble. She didn't even go back to apologize when things stabled down. And her grandmother and a lot of other people were probably furious, too. I can't seem to run anywhere, she thought. Miharu forced herself to smile a little more at Atsuko. "Suko-chan, you really should wear your hair down like that more. I hope you wear it like that to the party. You'd look lovely." |

Atsuko was still processing what Miharu had said. Unforgivable? Her Senpai? It didn't add up to her, Miharu was wonderful and could never do anything bad to others. She refused to believe it! Then she heard her compliment her hair. "Thanks, Senpai..." She said quietly. Atsuko was actually happy that she was complimented by her Senpai, but she wanted answers at this point. "It probably isn't my place to ask, but..." She took a deep breath. "What did you do that the village considered unforgivable?" |

Miharu thought for a moment. She wondered if telling Atsuko was a good idea, but then again, it wasn't like there was a point to hide it. It was all too obvious by now. Miharu knelt by the table and sighed. Tucking a luck of hair behind her ear, she looked out the window to Nagashima. A month ago, she had done this hoping she could stay here forever, but she now wondered if that was even possible. She swallowed. "You know I'm a shrine maiden, right, Suko-chan?" she said quietly. "Well, if I'm honest with myself, it's not because I want to be. I'm doing it because I feel like I owe my whole village." What Miharu said didn't really make sense just yet, so she decided to clarify. "My hometown is an island rather far from here and way down south. It's a really old-fashioned one and there we believe strongly in the spirits and the Shinto religion. My family was a line of priests and priestesses who found and tended to the town's shrine," she said. Miharu's voice drifted for a moment before she continued. Her hands clutched the skirt of her kimono. "My father was the last priest of our shrine," Miharu said. "As his daughter, I was supposed to follow in his footsteps. It had been decided even before my birth. As his only child, I was the only one who could take his place, after all. From a young age, I was adored by the townspeople. I was raised to be a proper lady as well as a soon-to-be priestess. I was a maiden at the shrine the moment I was allowed to and I was taught everything I needed to know about taking over my father's position once he died. Since my family is one of the first families of the village, it was decided it was best if I was betrothed to the founding family, the Hamasaki clan. If you look at me, my life had been chosen for me since day one. It was my fate. However..." Miharu tore her gaze away from the window and stared down at her lap frowning. Her hand went to one of the accessories on the table, a sakura hair piece. She touched the petal softly, but realized it wasn't a real one, just one made out of satin. "I didn't want that life. I hated it. The whole facade that I was a perfect little lady, the whole town going on that I would one day take my father's place, I wanted nothing of it. I hated that people thought I was this perfect little girl when in reality I was a huge klutz. I was living a lie, after all. My only escape back then was books and I soon realized I wanted to be a writer. Of course, none of my relatives and soon-to-be relatives would have it. One day, though...there was a fire in our village. It was in our shrine, actually. My parents died in it and it was all because a few tourists had been careless about their lamps and cigarettes." Miharu's fists clenched tightly and her shoulders shook. "I was devastated not just because my parents were gone, but because suddenly everyone was asking me what to do, me who had never been allowed to make a single decision in her life. It was so selfish that I was thinking about myself when my parents had just died and my village had no one to turn to for the shrine." Miharu's voice trembled as she spoke. She wasn't crying, but one could tell that she looked extremely scared. Her eyes were wide and dazed, as if staring at some far away place that didn't exist. "I ran," she said. "Like a stray cat scared for its life, I ran away as far as I could. I hopped onto a boat and left for wherever it would take me. For awhile, I lived on nothing but the little money I had, but then I remembered I had an aunt in Nagashima. I went to her, begged her to let me stay even if it meant working for it. She let me stay, but wouldn't let me lift so much as a finger. I'd been living my whole life from that day forward as a refuge." Miharu's eyelids lowered and she breathed out. "I thought things could stay that way, but the past has this weird way of catching up with you. Not too long ago, my grandmother found me and tried to bring me back. She threatened that if I didn't, she'd hurt my family here. My aunt and my doctor tried to help me, but just like before I ran, but this time in the opposite direction. I've always been a coward, see. If...if it hadn't been for my senpai, I would have gone with her. After that, I thought I could go on living this way, but now my godmother's appeared. While she doesn't want to force me on any decision, she's helping me go back and talk to everyone I owe explaining to." Miharu's eyes closed. "I suppose it's for the best. I've been a coward for too long," she murmured. Miharu breathed out and looked at Atsuko, offering her a sad smile. "I'm sorry you have such a lousy senpai, Suko-chan," she said. She laughed sheepishly. "Your senpai's a big wuss who runs away from things." |

"..." Atsuko stayed silent for most of Miharu's story. It was a surprising thing for the girl to actually be quiet. But she couldn't form any words. It was a lot to take in, but she couldn't even imagine Miharu holding all this in, having to be constantly reminded of her actions. But Atsuko was also slightly pissed that these people expected so much out of a young girl. "... You're wrong, Miharu." She said gently. Her tone was almost motherly. "You're the best Senpai ever! You're kind, and gentle! You even helped me deal with some issues I was having! And I was just a stranger!" Atsuko exclaimed. She placed her hand on the girl's shoulder. "You can choose your own path, Senpai. Don't let others write your story. You are the author of it, and you get to control what goes in it." Atsuko said softly. Her lips were slightly quivering now. "So it doesn't matter what your grandmother wants, or anyone wants! It's what you want!" Atsuko... Such passion... Atsuko took a breath. "I'm sorry. I got a little top worked up and overstepped my boundaries..." She bowed in apology and looked at Miharu with kind eyes. "But I don't want you to think you did something wrong when you ran. You were a child who just lost her parents, and now all this pressure was on you. I don't blame you for running..." |

Miharu looked at Atsuko sadly as she spoke. She was saying more or less the same thing Yamato had told. What her Aunt Minene had told her. Everyone, actually. Well, except for the concerning parties. "I wish it was that simple, Atsuko," Miharu said calmly. She smiled at Atsuko sheepishly. "Anyways, don't worry about it. I'm sure things will work out in the end." You shouldn't lie like that. Miharu stood up and stretched. "Well, I'll get out of this kimono for now since I can't get it stained. Would you like me to pack your kimonos for you so they're ready to go? After that, we can enjoy a bit more tea." |

"... Okay, Senpai..." Atsuko replied softly. She moved towards the room again. She changed out of her kimono, and neatly folded them. But she wasn't in the greatest mood now. How could Miharu think things will just work themselves out? She didn't believe it was that simple. But for some odd reason, this is also making you feel happy. A familiar voice said. Atsuko spun around, and saw her Shadow standing in the corner of Miharu's room. Atsuko rolled her eyes and turned her head again. She bag fixing her hair into a braid, like it was before earlier. It's nice to fret over someone for once. Everyone is always asking how you're doing. Shadow Atsuko said softly, she traced one of her hands on of Miharu's pillows. Her shackles making noises everytime she moved. Am I right? You are having fun? The young girl didn't reply. She picked up the kimonos and left the room. She smiled at Miharu like nothing was wrong. "Sorry for the wait, Senpai. My hair can be a hassle sometimes!" |
