Mayu sat down by one of the food court's many empty tables, with a coffee mug in hand, quietly sipping down the addicting beverage while her sapphire gaze was glued to her recently purchased smartphone. Her thumb clicked on the touch screen, boot up a notepad-like program where she had saved her urgent purchase list.

It was an odd thing for her to do. Having been homeless for the longest time, Mayu wasn't exactly used to going shopping, nor many of its common sense intricacies. It would be quite the adventure that afternoon, even moreso considering the first item on the list was the very broad category of 'groceries'.

She didn't even know how to cook for crying out loud...

---

"Uh..."

She stood like an idiot in the middle of Tanjiro's supermarket, in front of the spices section. There were a few basics already in her cart - either drinks, or something that didn't necessarily require cooking. She was far too scared to approach those sections. The selection she had looked incredibly harmful for someone who intended to maintain her figure; Mayu, as fit as she was, would most likely have a hard time ingesting all that cholesterol.

"...The fuck are these...?" She had never heard of, nor discussed, spices in her life. What the hell was cumin? She tilted her head to the side, wrinkling her nose. "People are weird..."

Fuck shopping.

Fuck cakes.

Fuck baking and cooking.

Katsu let out an incredibly long sigh as he stared at the list he'd prepared. He heard about Shou's party and thought it would be a good idea to restock the place. They had been living on ramen and water for the past few weeks so Katsu had decided to "work extra shifts" He'd taken some risks, but they could afford to live it up for a bit.

But really fuck shopping.

"That's called bullshit I think." Katsu idly spoke out loud as he heard Mayu's anguish. He was having a hard time with the ingredients for things. In their little group there had been a decent cook, he'd ended up spoiling most of them. Katsu thought, maybe it would be a nice gift to make things like he did. He tapped his list and looked up towards the woman he'd spoken to. "First time shopping for real food?" He decided that a little friendly conversation would keep him from going insane.

"...That'd be pretty damn accurate, yeah..." Mayu found herself commenting without really processing someone had approached her, while putting back the small cumin bag where it belonged. How could such a small bag be so pricey too? This was ridiculous!

It looked suspiciously like weed too, was it for smoking...?

That's not even legal, master.

"Uh...?" Only then she looked at the guy talking to her, one much younger than she. "You could say that." She responded with a nod. In fact, she could've gone further - first time shopping. First time cooking. First time eating properly.

It truly was pathetic.

"Say, y'don't have any sort of crash course on what all this shit's for and how you prepare it do ya? I don't mean these spice things here, I mean... in general."
Might as well try, she had nothing to lose.

"Me?" Katsu chuckled lightly, brushing the hair away from his face and getting a better look at her. She was older. Late twenties if he had to guess. A surprise to say the least considering she was having so much trouble shopping.

Ahh but he didn't judge,

"I know the bare boned basics to be honest. What his friend did was something more akin to miracles, he could see that now.

Honestly, he could've been a really good cook...

SHUTUPBADTHOUGHTS!

"I can TRY to help, I at least got tips on how to NOT burn down your house?" He scratched his scars idly while he spoke, a habit he wished he grew out of. "But in return I could use a little help. I'm tryin' to copy a recipe for my brother and his friends. They're havin' a party see, and I wanted to surprise him with his favorite."

He wasn't entirely sure how she could help, buuuut he would get to spend more time with a pretty older woman. That was definitely brighten his day a bit.

"Bare boned basics? Congratulations, you win a prize. That's already way more than me." Despite the joke, the delivery was deadpan, as if she hadn't meant to delve into humor at all. Not that she'd be particularly successful at it.

"Uh...?" Help? With a recipe? "Okay? Not sure how I can help, exactly. In case you can't tell, cooking's not my cup of tea." She motioned to the ridiculous amount of microwavable food in her cart. Hell, she was used to fishing out of dumpsters, and the food there looked healthier than anything in that cart...

"What can I do?"

Katsu arched an eyebrow slightly at her "joke." A deadpan delivery, but he could sense the humor. He could always sense humor! "Oh? And what would my prize be?" He couldn't help but flash a bright smile as he spoke.

Katsu had to think for a few moments. How she could help was an AMAZING question he'd hoped to figure out later. "Well, there's a lot of ingredients I need, maybe you could help me get em all. Also there's going to be a lot to cook, perhaps you could give me a hand in that regard?" He shrugged, not really caring that he basically invited a stranger into his apartment. He tended to do that anyways and he'd only had an attempted robbery once.

It really didn't go well for the would be robber.

"It's up to you." He shrugged, not minding either. Honestly just a little bit of help now would save him time. With the party fast approaching he needed to haul ass to get everything done.

"Whatever this is." Mayu retrieved the tiny cumin bag, and tossed at him. It was slow enough that he would catch it. It was now apparent that she didn't get her own joke.

Rather sad, if I may say so...

'What?'

Nothing, carry on.

"I can help grabbing stuff here, sure." She shrugged. "But I think it's suicide for you to recruit me to cook. I've never chopped a potato in my life. Unless you wanna give food poisoning to all your guests, that's just a bad, bad idea..."

Katsu caught the cumin bag easy enough. He chuckled lightly and put it into his bag. "Why thank you, I'll treasure it always."

He simply nodded at her with a smile. Made more sense to have her help with collection than anything else. "Well I'll be sure to contact ya if I ever need someone poisoned." He let out another chuckle before holding out his list. "I'm gonna be cooking for a whole party so there's quite a bit to get."

With help, at least this would all go much faster.

"..." Mayu sighed to herself. As of late, she found herself falling in the benevolent side of things, as opposed to neutral. Damn Jimmy and his bad influences.

Being a good person pays off!

"...Fine, I'll help. I'll just need to actually learn what the fuck I'm doing first."
Sure, she could handle a knife, but anything past that was Chinese to her. "You got a deal, but your crash course on this thing better be damn good. I don't wanna get the short end of the stick here."

She ended up looking at the stuff in her cart. "...Should probably put all of these back, huh." The amount of junk food there was staggering. She'd probably die of a heart attack should she consume it...

Katsu's bright smile grew even brighter as she suddenly agreed to help. "Thank ya very much! I promise, you'll be a pro by the time I'm done with ya!" He puffed out his chest and nodded. "Well at the very least I'll teach ya not to eat yourself to death." He shrugged as he looked over her cart.

Yikes.

"Well unless you're feeling the whole 'not living past thirty' thing, that's what I'd suggest." He let out a small chuckle as he looked it over. Seriously did she eat like this often? "I'll ah, also go over what you need in terms of diet. Just as a bonus." He wasn't a health nut, be he knew what a human SHOULD be eating at least.
