"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Etsuko remained silent, sipping at her chocolate, listening to Kakeru talk, proclaiming his intention to protect her if she needed it, that she was her own persona and not just Nishiyo's sibling, and that otherwise he meant to stay out of things...

The mention of a weakness to kids who needed help was vaguely annoying. She wanted to say she didn't need help and she wasn't just some kid, but--

Don't be rude. He's trying to be nice.

Tch. What's he even know about being in a situation like ours...

He might know more than we think. Be patient and find out.

Fat chance!

The girl, her expression as conflicted and confused as the argument in her head might suggest she was, reached up to rub at her forehead and after a few moments of fretful silence she just blurted out, "Well, uh--um--thanks. I guess. It's good t' know someone else who ain't gonna get in my face over it. And, it's Etsuko. M'name's Etsuko. Pleased t' actually meetcha properly, Kakeru Kagami..."

-insert something witty here-

Kakeru smiled before he sighed. "Well, nice to meet you too, Etsuko-san..." he said. "I guess that's it for today. I dunno when we will see each other again, but until then, take care," he said as he turned back, going to leave.

"And... ah, before that," before he stepped away, he stopped himself. "If you ever need my help or something, just drop by at my place. It's a dojo not too far from here. You'll see it even from a long distance," he said before he walked away. "Until then, bye."

And so, he left. He was thinking about going to buy something for tonight's dinner. Perhaps something fancier, like meat or something.

Etsuko blinked a bit. Oh, he was leaving... now that she knew what was up, she felt kind of disappointed that he was going so soon, but, it had been interesting, alright. And she'd learned some things about history, assuming Kakeru actually knew what he was talking about. She would kind of have to take his word on it for now, though. She couldn't exactly look it up on the Internet to see if he was telling the thing accurately, now, could she?

Still gulping at her chocolate, the girl raised a hand in a good-bye wave. The can came away from her mouth in time to allow a single phrase out: "Alright, g'bye then, Kakeru... san?" The honorific felt awkward on her tongue, but she did sort of need to start using those, didn't she? She might offend someone if she didn't. Up until now she'd never had cause to worry about that, because she was always in the rougher parts of town and "offending someone" sort of lost priority when you were trying to lift their wallet.

She remained where she was until she finished her hot chocolate, and then she dropped the can in the recycling bin next to the vending machine. And then, well? She went home. Masumi never even found out she went anywhere that day, and there was a nice, hot dinner involved, too.

Living in a house was great. Having someone to cook dinner for her was even better.
