"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
As Etsuko listened, she began to frown to herself even as her brain tried to file away names and things--she wasn't sure how she was supposed to remember who was who or which name went with which role or battle, that was what notebooks were for, but she didn't have that basic intellectual convenience. In the end, she decided she would remember what she could and forget what she couldn't. Hopefully she would be able to go over this stuff again later... "Um. Not really... apart from 'why's there so much killing,' but, I think the answer t' that's obvious," Etsuko rattled off uncomfortably, shifting in her seat. Well, the answer wasn't obvious at all. It just occurred to her as she asked it that this probably constituted a "stupid question." Falling silent for a bit, Etsuko's eyes went to the desk, where they hovered for a bit. She licked nervously at the inside of her lips. "Thanks," she said quietly after a bit. "For, um, for tellin' me this stuff. It was fun t' listen to." She looked up. "You've got somewhere t' be, right?" she said. "I, I guess, would it be a problem if I left with ya? Like, you unlocked the door, so, they gave ya a key, right? I don't want anyone knowin' I was here when I wasn't s'posedta be." |

Kakeru smiled. "Ah, I'm glad that you had fun. Not many people can appreciate history nowadays. There's nothing to be learned from history, they say," he said. For him, he liked history, Japanese history particularly. Perhaps youngsters nowadays couldn't really appreciate the beauty of the time in the past. "Actually, I have nothing in mind right now. I have nothing better to do," Kakeru shrugged. His girlfriend was on vacation, by the way. "And I got the key because I tend to lose my way a lot. My sense of direction is very poor, you see? My teacher took note of it and gave me this key," Kakeru showed Etsuko the key that he had with him. "So... what are you going to do next?" he asked. Then, he got an idea. "Ah, do you want to go to the rooftop?" he pointed one of his finger up. "I believe they didn't lock the door up there," he said as he looked at Etsuko, smiling at her. "Want to come?" he asked. |

"...Well, what're we s'posedta do about not screwin' up the same way twice if everyone forgets the first time it happened?" Etsuko reasoned, slipping out from her chair. "And well... I guess I'll stick with you. I got in by climbin' the wall, but I'd rather not climb back out if you're here. It's a nice wall." What it's a nice wall had to do with not wanting to climb back out, Etsuko didn't bother elaborating on. She just stepped up to Kakeru's side, glacing up at the ceiling with a dubious look on her face. "Whatcha wanna do up on the roof, though? Is there somethin' up there?" she asked. |

Kakeru shrugged. "It's nothing up there. We usually go there to eat lunches and do things like chatting with friends or just chilling..." Kakeru said. "Other than that, well... let's just say students love going to rooftop. Don't know why, it's some kind of unspoken rule. Let's blame anime for that," he said before he gestured to Etsuko to follow him. "Let's go. I have a feeling that they didn't lock the door leading to the rooftop..." And so, he led Etsuko out of the classroom into the corridor before he walked to the stairway, going upstairs. He was grateful that he had his map with him, or else he might end up losing his way again, like always. |

"...Okay?" Etsuko said uncertainly, shrugging her shoulders lightly and just going with the idea as she followed Kakeru. She hadn't expected the school roof to be a popular hangout spot--wasn't that a little dangerous?--but it was what it was. She followed Kakeru up the stairs and when he opened the door she was already a but hunched-down, hugging her arms in pre-emptive protection from the cold. She put her hood back up almost as soon as she got out, because it wasn't just cold up here, it was breezy. She immediately saw the charm of the roof. It was an outdoors spot, there were even a few benches, and the view of the schoolyard and what lay beyond was actually kind of nice. If it were Spring or Fall, Etsuko might have enjoyed eating a lunch up here... maybe with a circle of friends or... or someone else... Oh, just think it, it's not like anyone can hear what goes on in your head! Cordelia sighed in exasperation. "Or with a boy!" It's not embarrassing, it's just nature, like Masumi said! Don't pester her. It's perfectly alright to be a little bashful, isn't it? Apsaras replied reasonably. Cordelia's answer was an irate huff. ...You're both a pair of weenies. I hope the next thing to pop in here has more guts. Etsuko's left eye twitched a bit, and she walked up to the fence that served as a border between the roof and the ground below. She reached out, grasped it, and gave it a hard push. There was a surprising amount of give, and it didn't look hard to climb. But then, it wasn't like they were dealing with little kids who didn't know that high heights could kill, right? No one would actually try to break down this fence or climb over it... right? ... She turned around to look at Kakeru and pointed to the fence. "Has anyone ever fallen off here?" she asked, trying to make it sound like a casual question and not a genuine concern at all. |

"Oh? Well... not sure..." Kakeru answered to Etsuko's question. "I mean, sure, you might end up breaking a limb or two if you fall down from this height at best, or end up dying at worst, but so far, I've heard nothing about people falling off here," he said, going towards the fence, giving it a slight push. "But I've heard about some people trying to commit suicide here, but I guess that's just a rumor..." he shrugged. He might have heard about it sometimes ago, but he didn't really remember who was it. "So, what do you think about this place?" Kakeru asked. "Students love this place. They often come here to have lunch or just to hang out..." he went towards one of the benches. "Want to have a seat?" he asked. |

"...Oh," Etsuko said blankly, not really sure what to think of kids trying to kill themselves by jumping off the school. Part of her was repelled by the idea of someone killing themself in the first place... mostly she just wondered why anyone would ever do it at a school. If someone was going to end their life, wouldn't it be better to do it somewhere where as few people would be affected as possible? Crying for attention by threatening to kill yourself where people can see it, though, that's a thing! Apsaras noted dubiously. It wouldn't be real suicide, just very dramatic whining... a plea for sympathy. Pity me! Pity me! Try to save me, please! ...Like that, you know? Etsuko nodded slightly to herself, then refocused on Kakeru. "I think it's nice. And why not. It's a bit cold t'be hangin' out out here for long, though, ain't it?" The girl followed Kakeru and sat herself down on the bench, looking at the boy expectantly, wondering what his reason for bringing her up here in the first place was. There had a be a reason, right...? |

Kakeru noticed that Etsuko was looking at him expectantly, as if waiting for the next thing that he would tell her. But he just smiled at her as he leaned back, looking up to the sky. Due to his immunity against ice, the coldness didn't seem to affect him at all. "Is there anything you want to ask? Something on your mind?" Kakeru asked the girl, looking at her while smiling. "You're giving me that face, you know? It's obvious," he pointed at her. "I have a feeling that you want to ask me about why I'm doing this to you, right? Giving a history lesson at class, giving you a tour to the rooftop," he folded his arms. "Please don't tell me you're not curious about this at all." He did this because he had nothing better to do. And other reason was that he felt that it might be a good experience for this girl who had never attended school before. And being his usual self, Kakeru somehow felt this odd feeling that he needed to help this girl despite having no obligation to do so. It was a habit that he somehow developed not too long ago, and while he wasn't sure whether it was a good thing or not, helping this girl would be a right thing to do. |

Etsuko, on the other hand, was shivering now. Hugging and rubbing at her elbows, she nodded a bit at Kakeru's. "Yeah, t'be honest, I... kind of am, yeah," she admitted uncomfortably. "I mean, y'don't know me and for all y'know I'm just some trespassin' kid... so, why?" The girl brought her hands to her mouth and breathed on them, trying to warm her fingers with the warm air stored inside her lungs. Cordelia--who unlike Kakeru's Persona, was weak against the cold--muttered a few rather colorful words in Etsuko's mind. You know, I don't have any protection against it, but I can at least tolerate the cold better than she can, Apsaras noted in a neutral voice. To which Cordelia immediately replied: By all means! Tolerate away! Just get me back where it's warm, dammit! Etsuko closed her eyes, and with a flick of her mind, shuffled her consciousness around--placing Apsaras, the Persona she had drawn from her connection to Isoroku Mayoi--at the forefront of her self. Immediately she felt two things: relief from the cold, as if the temperature had become suddenly only half as punishing; and a certain warmth and calmness. Strangely, she felt like she trusted Kakeru Kagami a little bit more with Apsaras at the helm. Why was that, she wondered? |

"Well, 'cause I have nothing better to do," Kakeru answered. "So... let's just say... 'why not?'," he reasoned. "While there is no reason for me to help you, there's also no reason for me to ignore you. I just felt like doing it, that's all..." he said while leaning forward, propping his head with his hand while putting his elbow on his knee. Then, after a sigh, he added. "If you want a better answer, let's just say... I'm weak against kids who need help..." he admitted. "You said you never went to school, right? Helping you seeing a glimpse of school's life seemed to be a good idea for me, or that's what I thought a while ago..." he shrugged after saying that. "Are those answers satisfactory for you?" he asked Etsuko. He couldn't understand it, but he's weak against these kind of people. Perhaps it was just an instinctual reaction, but he still couldn't get it. Even without him knowing it, he always got himself acting like a big brother to those younger than him, even to strangers who didn't tell him their real names. |
